ARC Raiders Review: Still The Best Extraction Shooter

Every extraction shooter before this one lost me within a week, since the genre kept asking me to accept that losing loot to a better-geared stranger was the point. This ARC Raiders review comes from someone Embark Studios won over by making the machines scarier than the people. I picked the game up a while after it launched on October 30, 2025, and I have dipped in and out of the Rust Belt ever since.
I have had a go at every map, and both ends of the solo and trio split. Below, you'll find where the game earns its reputation and where it still frustrates me.
ARC Raiders Review Summary

ARC Raiders is a third-person extraction shooter built on raids into the Rust Belt, and the AI machines carry more tension than rival players
Six maps are live, with Riven Tides added on April 28, 2026 as the first new one since Stella Montis
The ARC roster runs from Ticks to the Matriarch, and learning what each machine hears beats any weapon upgrade
Proximity chat is the best social system in any shooter I play, and it turns a third of my fights into uneasy truces
Cheating hurt the game badly in early 2026 and Embark's response has been steady rather than fast
The Rust Belt Maps Still Surprise Me
Six maps is a modest number and it has never once felt small in play. Dam Battlegrounds opens the game, Buried City unlocks after six raids, Spaceport after twelve and The Blue Gate after eighteen. Stella Montis followed on November 13, 2025 once the community finished Breaking New Ground, and Riven Tides landed on the coast in the Riven Tides update. By the time Spaceport opened, I could read a firefight through a wall by sound alone, and dropping into those corridors with that skill banked beat being handed everything on day one.
Each map asks a different question. Dam Battlegrounds spreads me across swamp and treeline where fights start at range and end in a stairwell, and Stella Montis buries its best loot in cold tunnels I hate leaving. Buried City hides half its loot under sand that windstorms keep moving, so the route I ran last week might not exist tonight. Spaceport is all chokepoints and flanks, and it is where I most dread footsteps above me. The Blue Gate swings between open plains and tunnels, and its underground has cost me more full backpacks than anywhere else.
Map conditions keep all of the ARC Raiders maps from settling into memorised routes. Night Raids pile on loot and make the machines far more aggressive at once, the cleanest risk trade here. The hurricane condition throws wind, debris and shield decay into fights I thought I had figured out. Beachcombing hands me a Dockmaster's Detector and turns the Riven Tides shoreline into a metal-detecting session with rockets overhead.
My gripe is that the newest maps carry the best ideas, so Dam Battlegrounds has become the one I pick last. Embark has dated the Frozen Trail update for October 8, with a settlement beneath the mountains and more verticality than anything in rotation.
ARC Units Are The Real Enemy

The machines are why this game works. Every ARC unit that patrols the Rust Belt has a detection profile I learned the hard way, and that curve replaced the gear curve that usually decides extraction shooters. A Snitch will happily ignore me until it doesn't, and then it calls in something that ends my raid.
Threat scales in a way I respect. Ticks and Pops cost me a shield when I get careless, and Wasps and Hornets patrol in numbers that turn loud the second one sees me. Then the serious ones arrive. A Bombardier drops artillery on a position I thought was safe, a Leaper closes distance faster than I can reload, and a Rocketeer deletes a squad that clumps up in the open. Bastions shrug off everything I own, and the Queen and the Matriarch make me plan an exit before an approach.
What I like most is how the machines referee the player fights. A firefight with another Raider is rarely a duel for long, since the noise brings company neither of us wanted. I have won gunfights by backing off and letting a Bombardier finish the job, and lost extractions to a Sentinel on the last twenty metres. Husks and probes round the roster out as walking salvage, and I detour for a Baron Husk when my crafting queue needs feeding.

Proximity Chat Changes Every Fight
Proximity chat is why I have stories from this game instead of stats. I hear another Raider before I see them, and they hear me, so the first decision of any encounter is social. Roughly a third of my meetings end without a shot fired. I have traded ammo with a stranger through a doorway and been talked out of a kill by somebody doing a convincing impression of a man with nothing worth taking.
The betrayals land harder for the same reason. Getting shot in the back by somebody who spent two minutes being friendly stings in a way a random ambush never does. My rule now is simple: I talk to everyone and I trust nobody past an extraction timer. That tension is the heart of what ARC Raiders actually is, and it rests on the machines making cooperation genuinely useful.
Everything underneath it holds up too. Speranza gives me traders with branching quests, a Workshop, Raider Decks and skill points I spend on inventory space and quiet movement. Weapons sidegrade rather than climb, so a good early gun stays relevant and a rich player cannot out-stat me. Matchmaking balances by group size, and running solo is a real option instead of a handicap, which I value more than any other design choice here.
Cheaters And The Expedition Grind
The cheating was bad, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Through the first months of 2026 I had raids end to shots from places nobody could see me from, and the PvP layer felt poisoned for a stretch. Embark went public about stronger detection and harsher bans in January 2026 and has kept changing rulesets since. My bad-run rate has dropped to something I can shrug at, and I still meet the odd player whose aim makes no sense.
Expeditions are my other sticking point. Wiping voluntarily for permanent bonuses is smart, and the execution asks too much of anyone without a fixed schedule. Departure windows were tight, rewards favoured people already deep in, and new players got the worst of it. Embark named those three problems itself, extended the fifth window to three weeks and is pausing Expeditions afterwards, with a reworked version promised for early 2027. Buffs earned so far persist, and part-finished Caravans convert to tradeable vouchers.
Smaller things nag. Voice acting sits well below the art, sound design and animation around it, and Speranza's story beats land flat. Balance wobbles, with a weapon or a loot skill sitting too far ahead before a patch pulls it back. Cred is being retired on October 8 for a new reward currency, which is one more system to relearn. None of this touches the core loop.
Is ARC Raiders Worth Buying Right Now?
Yes, and I would say so to people who actively dislike extraction shooters, which was me. The game rewards patience and map knowledge over reflexes and gear score, and the PvE threat means a bad player fight is rarely the whole story of a raid. Over sixteen million copies had sold by the middle of 2026, and my queues stay short on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Here are the PC system requirements.
Support has stayed heavy. The engine moved to Unreal Engine 5.7 in Live Update 1.45.0, crashes are rare on my machine, and the update cadence has not slipped. For the cleanest entry point, wait for Frozen Trail, since a new map, an ARC Operation and the Outpost land together. It goes on sale often enough that patience costs nothing.
Anyone allergic to losing gear should sit it out, since free loadouts soften that blow without removing it. ARC Raiders items cover the materials gating the better schematics. The official Steam store page carries the current edition breakdown.
FAQs About ARC Raiders

Final Words
Most of my best play in ARC Raiders happens away from my crosshair. Listening for a Snitch, weighing up the voice through the wall, reading a windstorm to time a run across open sand. Shooters rarely give me that many decisions per minute, and almost never with this little noise between me and the consequence.
Embark's next year is the real test. Pausing Expeditions admits a headline system missed, and rebuilding it for early 2027 instead of patching around it is the harder and better call. Frozen Trail arrives with the Outpost and a new ARC Operation, and if that cadence holds, my map pool complaint takes care of itself.
Where to start has not changed since my first week. Raid slowly, talk to strangers, and let the machines do the work your gun cannot.
