The depths of the Umbral Abyss are yours to conquer in the Age of Wonders 4: Eldritch Realms expansion. Terrify your foes as an Eldritch Sovereign, wield mighty new tomes of magic, survive world-altering global events and lead your people against the darkness before it spreads across the realms.New Map Layer: The Umbral Abyss. A dark domain of Corruption and Fear threatens to consume the realms of mortals. It includes new tactical combat maps, a dozen unique locations to explore and exploit and new Umbral Dwelling independent factions inhabited by Umbral demons. These denizens of the abyss are corrupt creatures dedicated to the destruction of the light and invasion of the realms. The abyss will harm units who venture in it, but immunity can be gained by buying the Umbral Flesh Minor Transformation from the Umbral Dwellings.

Age of Wonders 4 is een 4X turn-based strategie game ontwikkeld door Triumph Studios en uitgegeven door Paradox Interactive. Het is de zesde game in de Age of Wonders serie, een franchise die teruggaat tot 1999, en Triumph's eerste terugkeer naar de hoofdsetting in fantasy in bijna een decennium na de sci-fi spin-off Planetfall.
Aan het einde van de Derde Tijd van de vorige game waren de strijdende Wizard Kings verbannen uit de wereld van Athla naar het Shadow Realm, alleen om eeuwenlang gevangen en gecorrumpeerd te raken in de leegte tussen de rijken. Nu hebben samenzwevende Shadowborn verschillende van deze oude tovenaars geholpen om hun anderewereldse gevangenis te ontsnappen en terug te keren naar Athla om zich als goden over stervelingen te vestigen. Spelers nemen de rol aan van een Ascended Champion, bouwen een nieuw thuis in de Valley of Wonders en sluiten zich aan bij de opkomst van de Wizard Kings of verzetten zich tegen hun tirannieke heerschappij met hun eigen arcane kennis.
Karakter- en factie-aanpassing staat centraal in het ontwerp van de game, waardoor spelers lichamelijke vormen, maatschappelijke eigenschappen en arcane krachten kunnen combineren om alles te bouwen, van een clan van kannibalistische halflingen tot mystieke maanfey. Het claimen van Tomes of Magic evolueert de eenheden en vaardigheden van een rijk gedurende een spel, waarbij heersers en volgelingen zowel visueel als mechanisch veranderen naarmate ze kracht verzamelen. Een nieuw narratief evenementensysteem voegt ontmoetingen, diplomatie en reactief vertellen toe gedurende een sessie, naast optionele verhaalmissies, hoewel er geen traditionele lineaire campagne met vaste missies is. Opties voor het creëren van rijken laten spelers de geografie, het klimaat en de regels voor elke nieuwe game aanpassen, of een willekeurig rijk genereren om te verkennen.
