Spelers nemen de rol aan van een overlevende die neerstort op een door de oceaan bedekte alienplaneet en moeten middelen verzamelen, apparatuur maken en onderwaterbases bouwen om te overleven terwijl ze de geheimen van de planeet onthullen.
De game draait om verticale verkenning. De oceaan begint als een ondiepe, helder verlichte riff vol leven en middelen, en maakt geleidelijk plaats voor diepere, donkerdere en gevaarlijkere biomen naarmate spelers verder naar beneden gaan. Elke zone heeft zijn eigen ecosysteem van wezens, materialen en omgevingsgevaren, waarbij de abyssale diepten een fundamenteel andere ervaring bieden dan de ondiepe zones nabij het oppervlak.
