Collapsing economies, rising sea levels, and shattered alliances have destabilized entire nations, including the disintegration of the European Union following Germany's bankruptcy, which sets vast populations of stateless refugees known as No-Pats adrift across the globe. The crisis reaches its breaking point in 2040 when a Kessler syndrome event sends most of the world's orbiting satellites crashing to Earth, triggering a permanent global blackout. With communications, navigation, and infrastructure crippled, long-simmering tensions between the last two remaining superpowers, the United States and Russia, boil over into open war by 2042.
