Développé et publié par Unknown Worlds Entertainment, Subnautica est un jeu de survie en monde ouvert sous-marin qui a été entièrement lancé le 23 janvier 2018 sur PC, après quatre ans d'accès anticipé sur Steam. Les joueurs incarnent un survivant qui s'écrase sur une planète extraterrestre recouverte d'océans et doivent rassembler des ressources, fabriquer de l'équipement et construire des bases sous-marines pour rester en vie tout en découvrant les secrets de la planète.
Le jeu est construit autour de l'exploration verticale. L'océan commence comme un récif peu profond et bien éclairé grouillant de faune et de ressources, et cède progressivement la place à des biomes plus profonds, plus sombres et plus dangereux à mesure que les joueurs descendent. Chaque zone a son propre écosystème de créatures, de matériaux et de dangers environnementaux, les profondeurs abyssales offrant une expérience fondamentalement différente des zones peu profondes près de la surface.
