OSRS Magic Gear Progression (2025)

Magic in Old School RuneScape isn’t just flashy spells and teleportation—it’s one of the most versatile combat styles in the game. You can freeze enemies, deal splash damage, teleport around the world, or heal allies. But none of that means much without the right gear to back it up. Good magic gear amplifies your spell power, increases your accuracy, and helps you survive tougher content like boss fights, Slayer tasks, and PvP battles.
The best part? You don’t need to start with endgame robes to make an impact. Like everything in OSRS, magic gear is all about progression. You begin with basic robes and staffs, then gradually upgrade as your Magic level and budget grow. This guide walks you through the best gear at every stage—from level 1 all the way to 99—so you can focus on casting more powerful spells and stop stressing over what to wear.

Early Game (Levels 1–20)

In the beginning, magic gear is cheap and simple, but still effective for basic training and low-level combat.
Blue wizard hat & robe – Light, affordable, and gives a small but helpful Magic attack bonus for early accuracy.
Amulet of Magic – A straightforward accuracy boost that makes early spells land more often.
Zamorak Monk Bottoms – Easy to get and useful early on. They provide a small Magic attack bonus plus Prayer, which is a nice quality-of-life while you train.
Elemental Staff (Air, Fire, Water, or Earth)– The MVP of the early game. Infinite basic runes for its element keep costs down while you cast strike spells.
At this stage, you’ll mostly be casting Wind/Water/Fire Strike or Fire Bolt for quests—this setup covers the basics well.
Mid Game (Levels 20–60)

When your Magic level starts rising, so should your gear. This is where you’ll feel a real boost in power and comfort.
Xerician robes – A lightweight set for early Slayer or safe-spotting. Note: they require 20 Magic and 10 Defence. Modest Magic bonuses, no Magic-damage %.
Mystic robes – A step up for accuracy and defense; widely used for general PvM and early Barrows.
Book of darkness – An off-hand from Horror from the Deep that gives +10 Magic attack and +5 Prayer, making it a very solid mid-game shield slot.
Staff of fire (or an elemental staff that matches what you cast) – Still great to avoid burning through basic runes.
Mage Arena (god) cape – Among the best Magic-attack capes at this stage; requires 60 Magic.
Amulet of power or glory – Common, affordable upgrades as you move toward more consistent damage.
This setup works nicely for mid-tier bosses like Obor, training at Crabs/Sand Crabs, and minigames such as Barrows.

Endgame (Levels 60–99)

Once you unlock higher levels of Magic, you can access some of the most impactful (and often expensive) options in the game.
Ahrim’s robes – Popular for PvM and PvP due to solid Magic accuracy and better melee defenses than most robes. Requires 70 Magic and 70 Defence.
Imbued God Cape (Mage Arena II) – Best-in-slot cape for Magic attack (+15 Magic attack), with a small Magic-damage bonus.
Off-hand choices include:
Book of Darkness remains a good budget pick (+10 Magic attack, +5 Prayer).
Arcane spirit shield if the budget allows—+20 Magic attack, and after the 2024 combat rebalance, it also contributes Magic damage % (now +3%). Requires 75 Defence, 70 Prayer, 65 Magic.
Ring – Seers’ ring (i) for a strong Magic-attack bonus; post-rebalance, it also adds a small Magic damage % (now +0.5%).
Weapon
Trident of the swamp – Still a staple high-level PvM weapon that uses charges instead of runes; requires 75 Magic. Efficient, reliable, and widely used across bosses.
At the very top end, many teams now lean on Tumeken’s Shadow (ToA) or Sanguinesti staff where available; Trident of the Swamp remains the best value and an excellent all-rounder for most players.
Ancestral robes – Peak offensive robes for general Magic in 2025. After the Project Rebalance update, each piece gives +3% Magic damage (set total +9%) and excellent accuracy, cementing Ancestral as the go-to for endgame PvM.
You’ll want this setup for high-end content like Chambers of Xeric, Theatre of Blood, Tombs of Amascut, and PvP scenarios like the Wilderness or LMS.

Final Words
Leveling Magic in OSRS is all about timing your upgrades and making smart choices along the way. Starting with basic robes and working your way up to powerful endgame sets (Ahrim’s for survivability, Ancestral for damage) gives you a clear sense of progression—and makes every level feel worth it. Keep an eye on items buffed by the Project Rebalance (like Ancestral, Seers’ ring (i), and Arcane spirit shield), because those changes made late-game Magic stronger and more rewarding to gear for.
