Requirements

Access to Yama requires completion of the ”A Kingdom Divided” quest. This Master-level quest unlocks the Chasm of Fire where Yama resides.

While there are no other formal requirements to attempt the boss fight, Yama is an endgame challenge designed for high-level players. Combat stats in the 90s, top-tier gear, and experience with complex boss mechanics are strongly recommended for any chance of success.

Yama Location

Yama is located in Yama's Domain, also known as the Chasm of Fire. This dungeon sits in the north-west corner of Shayzien and houses various demons led by the mysterious entity Yama.

Players can access the dungeon through several routes:

  • Fairy ring code DJR: Teleports you just south-east of the Chasm (requires previous visit to Great Kourend)

  • Kharedst's memoirs: Teleport to the Graveyard of Heroes by reminiscing "History and Hearsay" (requires Tale of the Righteous completion)

  • Battlefront teleport: Brings you north-west of the chasm

  • Skills necklace: Teleport to the farming guild, then run south-east (bring antipoison for lizardmen along the route)

Gear Recommendation

Your gear selection is crucial for defeating Yama. Use Tumeken's shadow along with full Ancestral gear. If you don't have an Ancestral hat yet, a Torva full helm works as a substitute. Keep at least one weapon switch available, preferably melee. This becomes essential during specific phases when melee attacks prove more effective.

The Purging Staff is another key item. Its special attack works effectively against cores that spawn during later fight stages. While not necessary, using a Bandos Godsword spec at the beginning can lower Yama's defense for a slight advantage.

Bring a Sanfew or Antidote potion. Yama inflicts poison damage similar to Zamorak, hitting for substantial amounts if left untreated.

Fight Mechanics

Yama follows a complex multi-phase pattern with specific mechanics in each phase. Understanding these mechanics is crucial for survival.

Initial Phase

The arena contains orange/red and black/purple glyphs. After each attack type, you must step on the corresponding glyph - orange after magic attacks and black after ranged attacks. In duo encounters, only one player needs to stand on the glyph to protect both players.

Yama alternates between magic and ranged attacks, starting with the opposite element of the more abundant glyph type in the arena.

Special Attacks

Yama uses various special attacks throughout the fight:

  • Ranged Attack: Shadows engulf players when Yama snaps his fingers

  • Magic Attack: Flames envelop players when Yama snaps his fingers

  • Flame Wall: Requires proper timing to run through without taking damage and having prayers disabled

Teleport Phase

At 66.6% and 30% health, Yama teleports players to a narrow strip where they must face the Judge of Yama. This involves crossing stepping stones while avoiding fireballs. The Judge uses targeted AoE attacks once players reach its platform.

Void Flares Phase

Yama summons Void Flares that must be destroyed before their timer expires. If not killed in time, they heal Yama and damage players. The Purging Staff's special attack is crucial here, turning 5-tick casts into 2-tick casts against the flares.

Enrage Phase

At low health, Yama enters an enraged phase with significantly increased defense bonuses. His magic defense notably increases from -30 to +81.

During this phase, Yama launches three fireballs in a line, with the outer fireballs expanding in an hourglass pattern. Players must move perpendicular to this attack to avoid damage.

Loot and Rewards

Defeating Yama offers a variety of valuable drops, making this boss worth grinding for consistent profit. Players can obtain the Yami pet, a rare cosmetic reward that showcases their accomplishment.

The Oathplate armor set remains among the most sought-after drops, with each piece being individually rare. Combined with other unique items like the Soulflame horn, Yama provides both consistent income through common drops and the potential for substantial payouts with rare items.

Final Words

Yama is one of OSRS's toughest challenges, requiring precise execution of mechanics and optimal gear selection. The fight demands mastery of glyph switching, void flare management, and careful navigation of teleport phases. While primarily designed for duo teams, skilled players can attempt it solo for an extra challenge.
