Starting with the Dungeon

The Karazhan Crypts sit in Deadwind Pass, behind the famous Karazhan tower. This dungeon is different from others. It has the Oppressive Darkness debuff. Players must stay close to a light source. Straying into the darkness will not only impair your vision and targeting but also cause you to steadily lose health. This mechanic forces you to work as a team and stay close to your designated light source.

Attunement

Before you explore the Crypts, you'll need to complete the WOW SOD Karazhan Crypts attunement quest chain. Start by accepting the 'For Gold and Glory!' Quest. Travel to Light's Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plaguelands. This is where your journey begins. Look for a billboard outside the chapel to pick up the initial quest.

The first quest is 'No Ordinary Shadows': Head to Deadwind Pass and locate the dungeon entrance at the south of the zone (coordinates 39.0, 74.0). Interact with the Deceased Adventurer to accept this quest.

The second quest is 'Seeking Survivors'. Turn in No Ordinary Shadows at Ariden's Camp (coordinates 52.0, 34.0) in Deadwind Pass and begin Seeking Survivors.

The third quest is 'Rescuing Harrison Jones'. Venture into the Ogre Cave in Deadwind Pass (coordinates 59.2, 73.4) and rescue Harrison Jones from his cage. You'll need to kill ogres and find the key to unlock the cage.

The final quests are 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?' and 'The Hypothesis'. Listen to Harrison's story and accept the follow-up quest, The Hypothesis.

Gathering Magical Items

Harrison needs three magical items for his research. This scavenger hunt will take you across Azeroth:

• Flame of Life: Kill Elite Dragonkin in Grim Batol.
• Ancient Ironwood Branch: Kill the first boss in Demon Fall Canyon Dungeon (requires attunement) or Tendris Warpwood in Dire Maul West.
• Enthusiastic Wisp: Go to Darkwhisper Gorge in Winterspring (coordinates 51.3, 91.1) and interact with the wisp.

With all three items in hand, head to the Crypt's entrance at Morgan's Plot (coordinates 41.2, 78.9). Use the torch near the entrance to clear it, then return to Harrison Jones one last time to turn in the final quest and gain access to the Karazhan Crypts.

Entering the Karazhan Crypts

Once attuned, you're ready to enter the Karazhan Crypts. But be warned: the darkness is your enemy. So, equip yourself with the best gear to be ready for the surprise encounters.

Upon entering the Well of the Forgotten, you'll find the Floating Firebrand. This torch grants the Guiding Torchlight buff and the Within Light debuff to everyone inside its radius. The Firebrand will follow the first member of your party that interacts with it. If the torch carrier dies, someone else must quickly pick it up to avoid a respawn at the dungeon's entrance.

Everyone must stick close to the torch carrier to benefit from the light. Communication and coordination are paramount. Because the minimap is useless inside the Crypts. Rely on your team and the torch to navigate.

Take note that Lingering in the darkness applies the Oppressive Darkness debuff, causing you to lose health and impairing your vision.

Boss Encounters and Loot

Karazhan Crypts are teeming with challenging encounters and valuable loot. You encounter five booses in your journey: Harbinger of Sin, Kharon, Opera of Malediction, Dark Rider, and Creeping Malison.

You start in Well of the Forgotten room, where you can choose to descend the stairs through the Pauper's Walk or jump down into the well, which leads to The Pit of Criminals. The latter option puts you straight into combat.

The Warden waits in the jail area. This giant skeleton enemy drops the Portcullis Key. Players can use this key only once. It unlocks one jail gate per run. Choose wisely before using it, as the key does not reappear. Opening a gate will release a Failed Apprentice, who will become hostile. You'll also find chests, one of which is a mimic.

The Karazhan Crypts are a non-linear dungeon with multiple routes and hidden areas that can be uncovered through specific actions. Discovering certain triggers may allow you to summon and face off against secret WOW SOD Karazhan Crypts bosses for additional loot.

Level and Group Composition

You need to be level 60 to enter the Karazhan Crypts. The dungeon is made for a team of five players. A well-balanced group is key to survival. You need a tank, a healer, and three damage dealers. Strong crowd control abilities help in tough battles. Burst damage makes fights easier. Choose your team wisely before entering.
