Valorant Guide: How to Plant a Spike with Wingman?

In March 2023, Valorant introduced a game-changing agent named Gekko. Gekko's unique ability, "Wingman," has revolutionized spike planting and defusing strategies. This signature ability offers unprecedented utility in both offensive and defensive scenarios, as well as remote spike planting and defusing.

This guide explores how to effectively use Wingman to plant the spike, covering basic techniques and advanced strategies.

Understanding Gekko's Wingman Ability

Gekko's Wingman is a versatile ability that serves multiple purposes in Valorant. This small creature can scout areas, assist in duels, and most importantly, plant or defuse the spike. To use Wingman, players must first purchase it in the pre-round shop for 300 credits.

Once equipped, Wingman can be activated using the designated key (C on PC, R1 on PS5, or RB on Xbox). When deployed, Wingman moves in a straight line, bouncing off walls, and concusses enemies upon contact.

Mastering Spike Planting with Wingman

Planting the spike with Wingman requires careful positioning and timing. To initiate the planting process, ensure you have the spike in your inventory and are within range of a planting site. Aim your crosshair at the desired planting location, typically highlighted in blue, and use the alt-fire command (right mouse button on PC) to send Wingman to plant the spike.

It's crucial to remember that Wingman's pathing isn't always direct, so be prepared for potential deviations in its route.

Wingman's Spike Defusal Capabilities

Similar to planting, Wingman can also defuse the spike. This ability allows your team to focus on eliminating remaining opponents while Wingman handles the defusal. To initiate a defusal, equip Wingman and use the alt-fire command while aiming at the spike.

Be cautious, though, as Wingman is vulnerable during this process and can be eliminated by enemy abilities or gunfire.

Maximizing Wingman's Potential

To fully leverage Wingman's capabilities, consider using it to scout areas and clear corners before entering a site. Its concussive blast can provide a significant advantage in duels, allowing you to swing on disoriented enemies. Additionally, Wingman can be used to detect and trigger Cypher's tripwires, providing valuable information without putting yourself at risk.

Recovering and Reusing Wingman

After completing its task, Wingman transforms into a globule - a bright blue orb with a colorful interior. If Gekko can reach this orb within the cooldown period, he can pick it up using the interact key (F on PC) and reuse Wingman in the same round.

Countering and Protecting Wingman

While Wingman is a powerful tool, it's not invincible. With only 80 HP, it can be easily eliminated by enemy fire or abilities. Be mindful of potential threats like Astra's Gravity Well, which can pull Wingman away from its objective, or post-plant molotovs that can quickly destroy it.

Coordinating with your team to provide cover and protection for Wingman is crucial for successful spike plants and defusals.
