GTA 5 Voice Actors for Michael, Franklin & Trevor

GTA 5 Voice Actors for Michael, Franklin & Trevor

GTA 5 came out in 2013, and over a decade later, people are still playing it. The game sold over 215 million copies worldwide, and a big part of why it holds up so well is the storytelling. Three playable protagonists, each with their own personality, backstory, and agenda, was something GTA games didn’t have before. That alone made it memorable, but what really brought it to life was the voice acting.

The characters in GTA 5 feel real; Michael sounds like a man tired of his own life, Franklin sounds hungry for something better, and Trevor sounds like he's one bad day away from burning everything down. That level of character depth came from talented actors who did more than just read the lines. They did full motion capture, brought their own energy to the roles, and in some cases became so tied to the characters that fans still recognize them years later.

This guide covers every major voice actor in GTA 5 story mode and GTA Online, so you know exactly who's behind the voices you've heard hundreds of times.

GTA 5 Main Protagonists Voice Actors

GTA 5 Voice Actors

The three protagonists are what make GTA 5's story work. Each one comes from a completely different background, wants different things, and handles problems in their own way. Rockstar cast actors who served as the physical models for their characters, too, doing full performance capture to make every cutscene feel grounded. The result is a trio that feels alive, and that starts with the people who played them.

GTA 5 Voice Actor for Michael De Santa

GTA 5 Voice Actor for Michael De Santa

Michael De Santa is voiced by Ned Luke, an American actor born on October 4, 1958. Before landing the role in the GTA 5 cast, Luke had spent years doing TV work, appearing in shows like Law & Order and Diagnosis Murder, along with over 100 commercials. Being a voice actor for Michael in GTA 5 was by far his biggest role, and it's easy to see why it stuck. He recorded dialogue in a booth, and as the GTA 5 Michael’s voice actor, he also provided full motion capture for the character, meaning every gesture, expression, and movement you see in-game came from him, too.

Luke brought a very specific energy to Michael, burnt-out, sarcastic, and self-aware enough to know he's the problem but not quite ready to change. That tension is what makes Michael one of the most compelling protagonists Rockstar has ever produced, and his performance is a huge reason for that. Since GTA 5, he hasn't taken on many major roles, but his connection to the fanbase has remained strong, and he's still one of the most recognized GTA 5 voice actors from the entire GTA cast.

Who Voice Acted Franklin Clinton in GTA 5?

Voice Actor Franklin Clinton GTA 5

Shawn Fonteno is the GTA 5 Franklin voice actor, and his casting is probably the most interesting story of the three. Born on April 8, 1968, and raised in Watts, Los Angeles, Fonteno grew up in one of LA's toughest neighborhoods and spent years around the kind of streets Franklin navigates in the game. That experience comes through in the performance in a way that's hard to replicate.

Fonteno is the older cousin of Young Maylay, the rapper who voiced CJ in GTA: San Andreas, and had a small uncredited role in that same game himself before landing a role as voice actor for Franklin in GTA 5 a decade later.

When Rockstar came calling for GTA 5 voice actors, he was brought in through a friend and GTA consultant, DJ Pooh. His acting was rusty at the time, with his last screen credit being the 2001 film The Wash, so he leaned heavily on Ned Luke and Steven Ogg during production to sharpen his craft. Alongside the voice work, he provided full motion capture for Franklin, reprised the role for GTA Online in 2021, and published a memoir in 2022 titled Game Changer about his path from Watts to one of gaming's most iconic characters.

Who Plays Trevor Philips in GTA 5?

Trevor Philips GTA 5 voice actor

Steven Ogg is the voice behind Trevor Philips in GTA 5, and out of the three protagonists, he's the one most people recognize from other work. Ogg grew up in Calgary and originally had his sights set on a sports career before an injury pushed him toward acting.

He moved to New York, picked up roles in shows like Law & Order and Third Watch, then briefly retired in 2003 to build a house. When he came back to acting in 2008, landing a GTA 5 voice actor Trevor Philips role a few years later turned out to be the role that changed everything for him.

What sets Ogg apart from the other two leads is how much of himself ended up in the character. Trevor's physical appearance is directly modeled on Ogg, and Rockstar built the character's personality around the energy Ogg brought to the audition room.

He's said that when he and Ned Luke first read together, the chemistry between them was immediate, and that connection likely sealed both their castings. Trevor was nominated for Character of the Year at the VGX Awards in 2013, with Ogg receiving a separate acting nomination for the performance.

After GTA 5, his career picked up significantly, with notable roles as Simon in The Walking Dead, Rebus in Westworld, and Pike in Snowpiercer. He's also the only one of the three leads whose son has a direct nod in the game, as Trevor's pickup truck is named the Canis Bodhi after Ogg's son Bodhi.

From Lamar's unforgettable roasts to Lester quietly pulling strings from behind a screen, these characters stick with you long after the credits roll. Final Words

What makes the GTA 5 cast special is how much of themselves the actors put into these roles. Ned Luke, Shawn Fonteno, and Steven Ogg didn't show up just to record lines. They did full motion capture, shaped their characters physically, and in Fonteno's case, lived a version of Franklin's story before the game even existed.

Rockstar picked actors based on fit, not fame, and it worked. None of them were big names when they became voice actors for GTA 5, but over a decade later, their performances are still what people talk about. GTA Online has kept that going, and as long as the game runs, so will the cast that made it worth playing.
