About Metaphor: ReFantazio
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a role-playing game developed by Studio Zero and published by Sega. It was released on October 11, 2024, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It is the first wholly original game from Studio Zero, an internal Atlus development team established in December 2016, led by director Katsura Hashino, character artist Shigenori Soejima, and composer Shoji Meguro, all veterans of the Persona series.
The story takes place in the United Kingdom of Euchronia, a medieval fantasy kingdom thrown into unrest following the assassination of its king. The late king's final decree activates Royal Magic, drawing every citizen of the realm into a tournament to elect the next ruler by popular support. Players control a young man from the Elda tribe, the prince's childhood friend, who joins the tournament alongside his fairy companion, Gallica. The goal is twofold: win enough popular support to claim the throne, and find a way to lift the curse that has kept the prince in a coma since an earlier assassination attempt.
The gameplay blends two styles of combat. Enemies roaming the overworld can be attacked directly in real time to start a fight at an advantage or dispatch weaker foes without entering a full battle sequence. Tougher encounters shift into turn-based Squad Battles, where a party of up to four characters fights using skills, weaknesses, and a system descended from the Press Turn mechanic familiar to Persona and Shin Megami Tensei players. Both styles can be switched between fluidly depending on the situation.
Central to character progression is the Archetype system, which functions as a job class system. Over 40 Archetypes are available across 14 lineages, each granting different skills and stat profiles that can be swapped freely between party members and combined to create hybrid builds. Social mechanics return from the Persona series in the form of Followers, relationships built with characters encountered across the journey that unlock new Archetypes and story content as they develop. A Royal Virtues system tracks the protagonist's personal stats separately from combat progression.
Metaphor: ReFantazio sold one million copies on launch day, the fastest-selling launch in Atlus history. It won over 50 awards, including Best Narrative at the Game Awards, and holds a Metacritic score of 92 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.

No. Metaphor: ReFantazio is a standalone original IP from Studio Zero, a separate internal team within Atlus. It shares creative leads with the Persona series, including director Katsura Hashino, character artist Shigenori Soejima, and composer Shoji Meguro, and borrows certain mechanical concepts such as turn-based combat and social progression, but features its own original world, story, and characters with no direct connection to Persona or Shin Megami Tensei.
No. The game includes adjustable difficulty settings and a combat system that can be engaged at different levels of depth, from straightforward real-time overworld attacks against weaker enemies to more strategic turn-based squad battles. Newcomers to the genre can engage at their own pace without prior JRPG experience being required.
A single playthrough focused on the main story takes roughly 60 to 80 hours. Players who engage with all Follower storylines, side quests, and optional content can expect well over 100 hours of total playtime.
Yes. A full prologue demo is available on Steam covering the opening chapter of the game, approximately five hours of content, including the first four dungeons and several Archetypes and Followers. Save data from the demo transfers directly to the full game.
