  • The Builder Base is a semi-separate game mode unlocked at Town Hall 4

  • Attacking earns Builder Gold and defending earns Builder Elixir

  • The Master Builder handles all upgrades, with O.T.T.O joining as a second builder at BH6

What Is the Builder Base?

Introduced back in 2017, the Builder Base is a largely separate mode within Clash of Clans. You access it by repairing the Boat on your home village's shore - something that becomes available pretty early in the game, at Town Hall 4. Once you cross over, you're greeted with a fresh base, a new builder (the Master Builder), and a new set of rules.

Think of it almost as a parallel version of the game: same app, very different experience. The buildings look different, the troops play differently, and the way you earn resources is tied to both attacking and defending rather than just raiding. Even the progression feels distinct - there's no carry-over from your home village, so you're building everything up from the ground floor.

The Battle System

Unlike at your home base, every attack you initiate exposes your base to attack by another opponent. The resource split reflects that two-way dynamic: attacking earns you Builder Gold, defending earns you Builder Elixir. A strong defense isn't just about holding trophies, it's its own income stream.

Trophies are gained and lost based on stars earned and destruction percentage. Once you hit BH6, attacks become multi-stage - your job is to clear two separate sections of your opponent's base. Stage 1 earns you Bronze Stars, Stage 2 earns Silver Stars, with a maximum of 6 stars across both stages.

Buildings & Troops

On defense, you'll run into things like the Roaster, the Mega Tesla, and the Guard Post - none of which exist back home. Offensively, the Builder Base troop lineup includes plenty of alternative units, as well as the Battle Machine, your Builder Base hero. This big mechanical warrior charges into battle with an ability called Electric Hammer, which lets him recover health mid-fight and hit hard for the next few swings at the cost of a temporary stun.

As you level up your Builder Hall (called BH levels), more buildings and troop slots open up, giving you more flexibility in both attack and defense, as well as allowing you to construct the Battle Copter. That is the second of two hero units available to you in the Builder Base, a flying machine capable of attacking the enemy from a distance.

Progression Tips

Clash of Clans O.T.T.O. and B.O.B.

If you’re just starting on the Builder Base, there are a few things worth keeping in mind. First, don't neglect your defenses. While the enemy will not steal your resources on a successful attack, successfully defending is how you earn Builder Elixir. A poorly built layout might result in you being out of resources even if you’re drowning in Builder Gold from successful attacks.

While largely disconnected from the Home Village, the Builder Base has a few features that provide it with some benefits. The two most impactful ones are the Gem Mine and the B.O.B. control. The Gem Mine is exactly what it says on the tin - income isn’t the greatest, but you’re getting the game’s premium currency for free. The B.O.B. control comes into play later on and gives you access to another builder for your main base in the form of a remote robot.

Once you hit BH6 and the second stage opens up, don't forget to give it the same attention as your first Builder Base. A lot of players put real effort into their Stage 1 layout and leave Stage 2 as an afterthought - but attackers who clear Stage 1 cleanly will roll straight into a poorly defended Stage 2 with troops to spare. Since defending earns you Builder Elixir, a weak second stage is essentially just you giving up resources for no reason.
