Dragon Duke Overview

The Dragon Duke is a winged red dragon covered in chains, with horns resembling a crown and a lower jaw resembling a beard. The Dragon Duke can be used both defensively and offensively; however, he is primarily a tank that shields weaker units, thanks to his high hit points, when used alongside other units. His unique passive ability, Royal Rampage, increases his damage by 100%, his attack speed by 50%, and reduces trap damage by half. His passive ability only activates if he is away from friendly flying units.

Dragon Duke Strategies

Due to his passive ability, the Dragon Duke can be a very powerful Hero. His large health pool, combined with his increased damage from his passive skill, in conjunction with his equipment, gives him the potential to destroy an entire compartment by himself.

Pet Synergy

The Dragon Duke’s passive ability still works even when accompanied by pets, except Sneezy, who will disable Royal Rampage with her boogers. The most popular pets to use with the Dragon Duke are the Phoenix and the Angry Jelly.

Using the Phoenix with the Fire Heart makes for a very deadly combination, as the Fire Heart deals a large amount of damage upon the Dragon Duke’s fall, after which the Phoenix temporarily revives him and continues his rampage, finishing off any enemy not destroyed by the explosion.

The Angry Jelly allows the Dragon Duke to temporarily target defenses, which can be useful for destroying major defenses, especially when combined with Lightning and Earthquake spells.

Rising Dragon

As a Hero with one of the highest hitpoints in the game, he can cause mayhem on your opponent for quite a while before being put down, especially when his passive ability is active. Using revive spells when he gets knocked down can be extremely powerful, as it means your opponent will need to battle the Dragon Duke all over again, wasting time and resources, and increasing your chance of victory.

Flyin Tank

The previous two strategies focused on using the Dragon Duke as a solo Hero in order to fully utilize his Royal Rampage passive ability; however, that is not the only use of the Dragon Duke.

In aerial assaults involving dragons, dragon riders, and electro dragons, the Dragon Duke acts as a tank that protects these weaker units. In this formation, he is usually paired with his fellow Heroes, the Minion Prince and the Grand Warden. Their high hitpoints and presence on the battlefield prevent your opponent from focusing all of their effort on the Dragon Duke.

If you decide to follow this strategy, your most important tool will be the Dragon Duke’s Stun Blaster, which can prevent major defenses from dealing damage to the army, especially if they are single-target defenses.

Royal Defender

When using the Dragon Duke defensively, it is best to pair him with the Barbarian King. The Dragon Duke can deal with ground troops without being damaged, as he is immune to all attacks that target the ground, while also fighting aerial troops that the Barbarian King can’t target.

In turn, the Barbarian King tanks and receives blows instead of the Dragon Duke and can attack any ground units that target the air, which can otherwise be tricky for the Dragon Duke to deal with if he isn’t equipped with the Flame Blower.

How to Defend Yourself From the Dragon Duke

clash of clans dragon duke fierce side profile

The Dragon Duke is a fearsome opponent that can be very tricky to put down. He can tank a large amount of damage, has resistance to aerial traps, and can pack a punch. All of this in one Hero makes for a stress-inducing encounter to defend against.

Power in Numbers

As the Dragon Duke is a single-target Hero, the best strategy is to overwhelm him with numbers and buy enough time for the defenses to damage him and eventually defeat him. Witches can summon skeletons that make for great shock troops to distract the Dragon Duke while the defenses get started.

Be careful, however, as his Flame Blower ability can be used to destroy the witches and their skeletons, as well as damage nearby defenses.

Sacrifice the Pawns

Clan Castle troops like Super Minions and Inferno Dragons can deal significant damage to the Dragon Duke and will eventually defeat him. The problem is that the Dragon Duke is more than likely to defeat them first, so don’t get attached to them and be ready to sacrifice multiple troops to put the Dragon Duke down.

Dragon Duke’s Hero Equipment

Like other Heroes, the Dragon Duke can equip two pieces of Hero Equipment to use in battle; however, he is not able to use them when defending.

The table below shows the Dragon Duke’s equipment as well as their use.

Use

Fire Heart

The Fire Heart grants a large amount of health regeneration to the Dragon Duke, as well as a death explosion.

It also grants additional damage and hit points to the Dragon Duke.

clash of clans flame blower

Flame Blower

When activated, the Flame Blower creates a cone of flame in front of the Dragon Duke that deals massive damage.

It also grants additional hitpoints and increases health recovery.

clash of clans stun blaster

Stun Blaster

Once activated, the Stun Blaster creates a shockwave around the Dragon Duke that deals damage, but more importantly, it stuns defending troops and buildings for a while.

It also grants additional hitpoints and increases health recovery.

clash of clans rocket backpack

Rocket Backpack

Upon activation, the Dragon Duke will fly in a straight line towards and across the whole base while damaging everything in his path.

While active, the Dragon Duke is untargetable; he will not trigger traps, nor will he trigger Clan Castle troops, but he will trigger Hidden Teslas to appear.

It also grants additional damage, max health, and health recovery.

Depending on your strategy, different combinations may be more practical; however, all of the Dragon Duke’s Hero Equipment covers his weaknesses. The Fire Heart allows for maximum use of the Royal Rampage passive ability, while the Flame Blower and Stun Blaster offset the Dragon Duke’s weakness of being overwhelmed by mobs of enemies and being targeted by defenses, respectively. His Epic piece of Hero Equipment, the Rocket Backpack, can be used to quickly remove the Duke from unfavorable positions or to launch him headfirst into the enemy, making use of his potential as a solo damage dealer.

Keep in mind that the Fire Heart’s death explosion only works the first time the Dragon Duke is defeated, and if he is revived, the explosion will not trigger if he falls again.
