You want to play GTA 6? Better start clearing some space now. With Grand Theft Auto 6 arriving November 19, 2026, current estimates put the install size somewhere between 120GB and 200GB - and on a 512GB Xbox Series S, the high end of that range would swallow more than half the console's entire usable storage. There is no disc to fall back on, either - for the first time, a mainline GTA is shipping without one.
GTA 6 Storage Size: What Do We Know
No official install size has been published. Every figure circulating right now is an estimate, leak, or storefront inference - including the "just under 200GB" claim that originated with the unofficial GTA 6 Intel account in 2024 and has been recycled ever since. GamesRadar+ advises treating it "with a pinch of salt," and settles on a conservative floor of 120–130GB with room to go well above it.
The 120–200GB consensus range is built on precedent. GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both sit near 100–120GB on consoles once years of updates are counted; Starfield landed at 125–140GB. A denser Leonida, two protagonists, and a full current-gen asset pipeline all push upward from there.

If space is tight, PlayStation gives you three routes. You can delete and reinstall other titles, which costs nothing but time. You can fit an internal M.2 SSD - Sony requires a PCIe Gen4 drive with a heatsink - which is the only option that lets you run GTA 6 directly from the expanded storage. Or you can attach an external USB drive, which is cheap but comes with a serious catch.

GTA 6 storage on Xbox is ~180GB. Xbox is where the split gets ugly. The Series X has about 802GB usable, putting it level with the PS5 Slim: roughly a fifth of the drive gone, irritating but survivable. The 1TB Series S released in 2023 sits in similar territory at around 800GB.
The original 512GB Series S is the outlier, and the reason this launch is a genuine problem for some players. With just 364GB usable, a 180GB GTA 6 consumes close to half the console - and at the top of the estimate range, more than half. For those owners, one game would occupy the space of an entire modest library.
Microsoft's fix is the Storage Expansion Card from Seagate or WD, in capacities from 500GB to 2TB, depending on the brand. It matches internal SSD speeds and runs current-gen games natively, which standard external drives do not.

One trap worth flagging: standard external USB drives will not run GTA 6. On both PS5 and Xbox, external drives can archive current-gen games but not play them. You would have to copy the whole thing back to internal storage before launching - a 180GB shuffle every time.
GTA 6 Preload opens November 12
Pre-order customers get preload access one week before launch. Clearing space in advance is the difference between playing on day one and watching a progress bar crawl through launch-week server congestion.
Rockstar is expected to confirm the final figure closer to release. Until then, budget for 200GB and be pleasantly surprised.

Nothing about GTA 6's storage footprint is officially confirmed yet, and anyone quoting a precise number is guessing. Even so, the practical move is clear. The move is the same and the timing is now. Audit your library, uninstall what you have finished, and price out expansion storage before launch-week demand does it for you.
