GTA 6 Criminal Profile: What It Is And How It Works

GTA 6 Criminal Profile: What It Is And How It Works

Rockstar has spent years telling us almost nothing about how GTA 6 actually plays. That changed this month: a studio visit by YouTuber TGG revealed the first real look at the GTA 6 Criminal Profile, a system that quietly grades the way you commit crimes rather than whether you commit them at all. It matters for one reason: this is the closest thing Vice City has to a morality meter, and it reads your habits over dozens of hours.

We'll break down the five states, the one that can't be undone, and how the whole thing splits between Jason and Lucia.

GTA 6 Criminal Profile Summary

GTA 6 Criminal Profile Summary
  • Criminal Profile is a five-state system that assesses how you carry out crimes, not how many you commit.

  • The states run Professional → Aggressive → Violent → Psycho, plus a fifth widely reported as Shattered.

  • Shattered is permanent - once the meter breaks, it stays broken for the rest of that playthrough.

  • Jason and Lucia carry separate profiles, so one can stay clean as the other spirals.

  • Nothing gates story progress or locks missions behind a reputation grind.

  • You can switch the on-screen notifications off and let consequences arrive unannounced.

  • Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson frames it as roleplay support, not punishment.

  • GTA 6 is still dated for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

What The Criminal Profile Actually Tracks

What The Criminal Profile Actually Tracks

Wanted levels measure heat. The Criminal Profile measures character. Stars spike during a chase and wash off once you lose the cops; the profile sits underneath with a far longer memory.

Rockstar draws the line around necessity, not legality. Robbing a place, or dealing with someone who came after you first, is fair game. Nelson's phrasing: sway happens when you "go beyond what is necessary on a consistent basis“. That word consistent carries the weight. One messy shootout won't redefine your Lucia - drift toward Violent is earned across a stretch of the campaign, not in a single scene.

Rockstar has confirmed the profile does not block missions, gate story beats, or demand reputation farming, which is a real departure from how most morality meters work.

GTA 6 Criminal Profile States

State

What it reflects

Reversible?

Professional

Restraint, control, minimal unnecessary harm

Yes

Aggressive

Force used early and often

Yes

Violent

Collateral damage as a routine cost

Yes

Psycho

Chaos as the point, not the tool

Yes

Shattered

The meter itself breaks

No

The first four behave like a slider. Play differently for long enough and you drift back up or down - a spectrum, not a scoreboard.

Shattered: The Point Of No Return

The fifth state is the one people keep arguing about. Push far enough past Psycho and the meter cracks permanently - no climbing back to Professional for the rest of that playthrough. Shattered is the label from PC Gamer's write-up; other outlets describe the state without naming it, so treat it as shorthand, not a confirmed in-game term.

The framing differs too. Notebookcheck treats it as a genuine descent, a character sunk for good. Yahoo's coverage reads it as an escape hatch for players who never wanted a morality meter watching them. Reaching it is described as difficult, so most first playthroughs won't see it.

Jason and Lucia, the two protagonists, keep independent profiles. Play Lucia as a calculating operator and Jason as a walking disaster, and the game tracks both honestly. Character switching happens under set conditions rather than freely, giving each profile room to take its own shape.

That opens up a partnership where one half is coming apart and the other is holding the job together.

FAQs About GTA 6 Criminal Profile

FAQs About GTA 6 Criminal Profile

Does the Criminal Profile block story missions?

No. Rockstar has confirmed the system doesn't gate progression or require reputation farming. Every mission stays available at any state.

Can you turn the Criminal Profile off?

You can't remove the system, but you can disable its on-screen notifications. Plenty of players will do this to let consequences surface naturally instead of watching a meter tick.

Is the Shattered state really permanent?

Yes, for that character in that playthrough. Once the meter breaks it stays broken, and reports describe it as hard to reach by accident.

Do Jason and Lucia share one profile?

They don't. Each protagonist has an independent Criminal Profile, so their states can sit at opposite ends of the scale.

When does GTA 6 launch?

Rockstar's official page lists November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, after two delays. No PC date has been announced.

Final Words

The Criminal Profile looks less like a scoring system and more like a mirror. It won't stop you doing anything, and that's exactly what makes the consequences land differently. A meter that punishes you teaches you to play around it. A meter that only watches leaves you with the uncomfortable part - deciding whether you actually wanted to do that.

The permanence is the sharp edge. Most games let you grind your way back to sainthood. Cracking the meter for good means a save file that carries a version of Jason or Lucia you can't talk your way out of, and that's a rare thing for an open world to commit to.

Two questions decide whether any of this matters at launch. Does the profile reach far enough - into missions, factions, endings - to be felt without the notifications on? And do the two protagonists' states ever collide, or do they sit side by side as flavour? Rockstar hasn't answered either, and the TGG preview stopped short of showing consequences in motion.
