How to Get Heroes in Clash of Clans

How to Get Heroes in Clash of Clans

Heroes are the most powerful permanent units in Clash of Clans. Unlike regular troops that need to be trained before every attack, heroes stay in your village, regenerate after battles, and get stronger as you upgrade them.

Getting heroes is tied directly to your Town Hall level. Each hero becomes available at a specific milestone, and you unlock them through the Hero Hall, a building that manages all hero upgrades and slots in one place. In this article, we'll explore how to get every hero in Clash of Clans, what Town Hall level you need for each one, and what it costs to unlock them.

The Barbarian King is a durable frontline unit built to tank damage and support your troops. The Archer Queen has a long attack range and can target both ground and air units, making her central to most attack strategies. The Minion Prince is an aerial hero who works best when paired with flying troops. The Grand Warden is a support hero that boosts the survivability of nearby troops and switches between ground and air modes.

The Royal Champion specializes in taking out key defenses quickly and is most effective as a cleanup unit. The Dragon Duke, added in the March 2026 update, is a flying hero that becomes significantly stronger when no other aerial troops are nearby, rewarding a solo approach. In the Builder Base, the Battle Machine acts as the main tank in most strategies, while the Battle Copter provides an aerial option that bypasses walls and ground-level traps.

How to Unlock Heroes

a picture of the town hall in clash of clans

Heroes are unlocked through the Hero Hall, a building that becomes available at Town Hall 7. Before it was introduced, each hero had its own dedicated altar. Now, everything runs through one building, and upgrading it is what opens up new hero slots.

Follow these steps to unlock your first hero.

  1. Reach Town Hall 7.

  2. Build the Hero Hall using Gold.

  3. Save up the required Dark Elixir.

  4. Open the Hero Hall and purchase the Barbarian King.

Each subsequent hero requires you to upgrade the Hero Hall to the corresponding level. The Archer Queen unlocks at Hero Hall level 2, the Minion Prince at level 3, and so on up to the Dragon Duke at level 9. You can check the current Hero Hall requirements for each hero directly inside the building.

For Builder Base heroes, the process works differently. The Battle Machine becomes available at Builder Hall 5 and the Battle Copter at Builder Hall 8. Both are managed separately from the Hero Hall in your Home Village.

How to Upgrade Heroes

Heroes are upgraded using a Builder, not the Laboratory. Each upgrade ties up one builder for the full duration, which can range from a few hours at early levels to several days at higher ones. A hero can't be used in attacks while being upgraded, so plan around wars and Clan War League to avoid going into important battles short-handed.

Most Home Village heroes use Dark Elixir for upgrades. The Grand Warden is the only exception, as he runs on regular Elixir. This means you can work on him at the same time as another hero without competing for the same resource.

Every fifth level is a meaningful milestone. These thresholds improve the hero's active ability, so reaching levels 5, 10, 15, 20, and beyond has a bigger impact than most other incremental upgrades.

For upgrade priority, most players focus on the Archer Queen first. She has the highest overall impact across different attack strategies and benefits significantly from early investment. The Grand Warden is a strong secondary focus given that his upgrades don't pull from your Dark Elixir reserves.

Final Words

Heroes are one of the most important parts of your progression in Clash of Clans. Each one unlocks at a set Town Hall level through the Hero Hall, and keeping them upgraded consistently will have a bigger impact on your attacks than almost anything else in the game. Focus on one hero at a time, plan upgrades around your war schedule, and prioritize the Archer Queen and Grand Warden early on.
