Hell Is Us Review: A War Story Worth Getting Lost In

Hell Is Us is the rare action game that refuses to tell me where to go, and this Hell Is Us review comes down to one question: is that refusal worth your evenings? Rogue Factor and Nacon released it on September 4, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and its Hell Is Us exploration gives you no map and no quest markers to lean on. I picked it up a few weeks after launch, finished the story, and came back in the summer to close the time loops I had walked past.
It's a war story first and a monster game second. The creatures are strange, and the people are worse.
Below, you'll find my verdict on the story, the investigation, the Hell Is Us combat, the side content, and who should buy it.
Hell Is Us Review Summary

Hell Is Us is a third-person action-adventure set in Hadea, a closed-off country torn apart by a civil war between Palomists and Sabinians.
Exploration is the star: no map, no markers, just NPC directions, a compass and the clues stored on Rémi's datapad.
The Healing Pulse turns well-timed combos into health and keeps fights tense on harder settings.
Hollow Walkers and their Hazes repeat too often across a 20 to 30 hour campaign.
Timeloops, Good Deeds and dial puzzles reward players who backtrack with a notebook.
A major update with ten new Hollow Walkers is scheduled for October 27, 2026.
Hadea's War Is the Real Horror
You play Rémi, a peacekeeper born in Hadea, a nation sealed off from the rest of the world. His mother smuggled him out when he was five, and he comes back as an adult, in the middle of a civil war, to find his missing parents. Beyond the fighting, a mysterious Calamity has filled the country with white, faceless creatures. The official description on Steam calls humankind the worst demon of the story, and the game backs that up scene after scene.
The people stayed with me longer than the monsters. Nearly every survivor I met carried a grudge older than the creatures. The Palomist and Sabinian conflict is written with enough ugliness that I stopped looking for a clean side by the end of Act 1. Plenty of the bodies I found had nothing to do with the Hollow Walkers.
Expect a lot of blood and a lot of civilians who have run out of hope. I sat through optional conversations I would skip in other games, since half of them hid a direction or a name I needed later. The search for Rémi's family and the mystery of the Keystones kept me hooked to the end.
I left Hadea thinking about the war long after I stopped thinking about the creatures. Few games make the monsters feel like the smaller problem.
Hell Is Us Exploration Trusts My Notes
There is no map in Hell Is Us and no quest marker to follow. Characters give directions with landmarks and cardinal points, and Nacon's own survival tips point players to the compass and to note-taking. That compass shows north, south, east and west, and it never points at an objective. Documents and clues you pick up end up on Rémi's datapad.
My first evening was rough. I circled the same stretch of swamp again and again, convinced I had missed a path. Then I reread a conversation and saw I had mixed up two landmarks the same villager had mentioned. From then on a paper notebook sat next to my controller, full of door codes, symbols and names.
Lore I read in one place kept answering puzzles somewhere else. The ancient dungeons are the highlight, each built around an emotion and sealed behind chunky physical dials you can only solve with information you actually paid attention to. Getting one open felt earned in a way a waypoint never does.
Rémi can't jump or climb, so a knee-high wall turns a shortcut into a detour, and the opening regions ask for a lot of backtracking. Digging through the inventory and clue screens is slow too. Patch 1.5 on January 13, 2026 added a PC walk toggle and some quality-of-life tweaks, but the menus still drag.
The Healing Pulse Carries the Combat
Hell Is Us combat gives you regular strikes, charged attacks, a block, a dodge and a parry against attacks that glow red. Rémi fights with one of four weapon types (a sword, a polearm, a greatsword or a pair of axes), each carrying Glyphs as special abilities. Landing hits builds a ring of white particles around Rémi, and pressing R1 or RB once the ring forms turns that damage into health. That's the Healing Pulse, and it runs the whole system.
My habits flipped within the first hour. I stopped hanging back to use healing kits and started attacking to stay alive, timing the pulse between enemy swings.
Rémi's drone can distract an enemy, spin through a group or fire a charged attack that interrupts a swing, and the distraction saved me more often than any Glyph. At the blacksmith Victor, each weapon takes a Lymbic Sphere tied to one emotion. That choice decides which Glyphs fit the weapon.
Difficulty is flexible, with three combat presets, custom sliders for enemy health, damage and aggressiveness, and an optional death penalty that resets enemies and wipes XP earned since your last save. I moved to harder settings after Act 1, and fights got better with less room to be sloppy.
Hollow Walkers Repeat Too Often

Hollow Walkers are empty white figures, and some of them come with a Haze, a tethered entity tied to grief, ecstasy, rage or terror. The Walker can't be damaged until its Haze is gone, so every one of those fights starts with the Haze. In a PlayStation Blog feature, creative director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête explained that the enemies are physical forms of human emotion, built on Robert Plutchik's wheel of emotions.
On paper the roster holds 27 enemies: 15 Hollow Walker variants and 12 Hazes, spread across three tiers each. In practice the matchups felt familiar by the middle of Act 2. Each Haze fights the same way wherever it shows up, and I could guess how an encounter would go from the color of the glow before it started.
Boss fights break the pattern, with the Keystone of Terror fight as the one I remember best. Out in the open regions the same few setups fill the gaps between investigations, and on long sessions I started routing around fights.
Rogue Factor has announced a major update with ten new Hollow Walkers, scheduled for October 27, 2026 alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 version. Will it fix the repetition? It targets the right problem.
Timeloops and Good Deeds Earn the Detour
Hell Is Us timeloops are glowing spheres that keep spawning enemies. To close one, you track down its Loop Guardians with the Guardian Detector, beat them, then enter the loop and use your drone to seal it for good. Closing a loop shuts down that source of enemies for good, and I liked watching the map in my head get safer.
Patch 1.7 on July 23, 2026 changed the Guardian Detector so it picks up every remaining Lymbic Entity in an area once you close a timeloop there. That fix pulled me back in the summer, and clearing the loops I had abandoned went much faster.
Civilians hand out Good Deeds, requests for help that come with nothing but their own words to go on. Getting a radio to Lukhan stuck with me more than most fetch quests, and the rewards with Gildas Brom at the Watcher's Nest made each detour worth it.
Tania, a journalist, analyzes the items you collect. Filling her research reveals Forbidden Knowledge Chambers with rare loot behind symbol codes, which is the best case the game makes for a notebook over a map.
Is Hell Is Us Worth Buying Right Now?
Yes, if you want an adventure that treats you like a detective. Hell Is Us suits players who read every note, write down codes and enjoy getting a little lost. If a missing map sounds like freedom, few games offer anything like it.
Patches 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7 fixed crashes, memory leaks and a crash in the Keystone of Terror boss fight, and added PC upscaling options. The game joined Xbox Game Pass in July 2026 and the PlayStation Plus game catalog in August 2026, and Rogue Factor says it has passed 1.5 million players.
Combat-first players should wait for the new Hollow Walkers. Anyone who needs markers to feel comfortable should try it through a subscription first. At full price I'd recommend it to fans of investigation games, and on a sale to almost everyone else.
FAQs About Hell Is Us

Final Words
Hell Is Us asks for patience up front and pays it back later. The backtracking and slow menus make the first hours the weakest, and the best parts only open up once you stop waiting for the game to lead you.
Keep a notebook. Players who write things down will remember Hadea as a puzzle box full of grief, and players who don't will remember circling the same swamp.
The enemy roster is where my doubts sit. Ten new Hollow Walkers could fix the repetition I felt in Act 2, or they could be more of the same in new colors, and that decides whether a second run is worth it.
