Hell Is Us Enemies Explained and Why the Fights Repeat

The roster of Hell Is Us enemies looks bigger on paper than it feels in play. Hell Is Us has 27 enemy types, split into 15 Hollow Walker variants and 12 Hazes, yet most fights across Hadea come down to five Walker bodies and four glowing emotions.
That repetition was the game's weakest part for us, and it got its own section in our Hell Is Us review. This piece picks up from there, covering every Hollow Walker, the four Haze types, and why encounters blur by Act 2.
Rogue Factor seems to agree the roster needed work. The free Hell Is Us update on October 27 adds ten new Hollow Walkers, and below we cover what's confirmed so far.
Hell Is Us Enemies Summary

27 enemy types: 5 Hollow Walker types and 4 Haze types, each with 3 tiers.
A Walker with a Haze tethered to it takes no damage until the Haze dies.
All five Walker types flash red before a parryable attack, so one tell covers every Walker.
Each Haze fights the same way wherever it appears, and matchups felt familiar to us by the middle of Act 2.
Boss fights are the one place the pattern breaks.
The Hell Is Us update adds 10 new Hollow Walkers on all platforms on October 27.
Hollow Walker Types in Hell Is Us
Hollow Walkers are the empty white figures you fight all over Hadea. Creative director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête described them on the PlayStation Blog as emotionless copies of a human body that anchor an emotion. There are five types with three tiers each.
Hollow Walker | How it fights | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
Primeval | Basic lunges and swings, low health | A red swing you can parry |
Feral | Double slashes on long, pointed arms | The second slash turns red |
Protector | Wing guard that counters your hits | Stop attacking when the wing goes up |
Artillery | Projectiles and homing explosive bubbles | Stay close to cut off its range |
Negator | Damaging ground zones, spinning wing attacks | Fight it away from the glowing zones |
The Primeval has no special moves and a low health pool, so steady hits stagger it. The Feral Walker walks on pointed arms, and Rogue Factor shot its motion capture with dancers wearing stilts on their hands.
Positioning wins the other three: circle behind the Protector, stay close to the Artillery Walker, and pull the Negator out of its zones. All five share one tell, a red flash before a parryable attack, so learning one Walker teaches you most of the others.
Haze Types and How the Tether Works
A Haze is an entity tethered to a Hollow Walker and tied to one emotion. Jacques-Belletête said the enemies are physical forms of human emotion, and the Haze colors are inspired by Robert Plutchik's emotion wheel. Each of the four emotions has three tiers.
Haze type | Attack style | Signature moves |
|---|---|---|
Haze of Grief | Swings and slams | Fist swings and glowing limb slams |
Haze of Ecstasy | Turns into spiked forms | Spiked ball charges and lunging spikes |
Haze of Rage | Spins and turns into bars | Double slams and a ranged spike wall |
Haze of Terror | Vanishes and reappears | Blink strikes and thrown cube projectiles |
Any Walker with a Haze attached can't be damaged until the Haze is gone, so every one of those fights starts with the Haze. Both move on their own, and you end up dodging from two angles at once.
Send your drone at the Walker to buy a few seconds, burst the Haze down, then finish the host.
Why Hollow Walkers Repeat Too Often

The 27-enemy count is built from tiers. The 15 Walker variants are three tiers of five bodies, and the 12 Hazes follow the same pattern across four emotions, so the number of distinct fights is far smaller.
In our review, the matchups felt familiar by the middle of Act 2. Each Haze fights the same way wherever it shows up, so the color of the glow told us how an encounter would go before it started.
Boss fights break the pattern, with the Keystone of Terror as the standout. Out in the open regions, the same few setups fill the gaps between investigations, and on long sessions we started routing around fights.
The repetition does make combat easy to read. Once the tells click, fights feel fair, which suits players who came for the story. Anyone who wants combat to keep testing them runs out of new problems long before the credits.
What the October 27 Hell Is Us Update Adds
The free Hell Is Us update lands on October 27 with 10 new Hollow Walkers on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and the new Nintendo Switch 2 version. It was first set for October 8.
Rogue Factor moved both the update and the Switch 2 port in an official post on X, citing logistics and distribution issues outside its control. The studio said the content is finished and kept the release simultaneous across platforms.
Patch notes aren't out yet. The announcement teaser gave a first look at some of the new designs, but Rogue Factor hasn't published a full rundown of their attacks, Haze pairings or where they appear.
Ten additions against a launch roster of five Walker types goes straight at the problem above. Owners on Steam and consoles get it as a regular patch at no extra cost.
FAQs About Hell Is Us

Final Words
Hell Is Us built a smart enemy idea and stretched it too thin. Tying every fight to an emotion gives Hadea a strong identity, and the roster stays the same size from the first ruin to the last.
Newcomers should learn the red flash in the first hour. Once that rhythm sticks, Walker fights get much easier to read.
So will ten new Walkers be enough? If they bring new Haze pairings and show up across Hadea, the back half could feel fresh again.
Watch for the patch notes before October 27. We'll break down all ten new Hollow Walkers once the update is live.
