Hell is Us is a third-person action-adventure game developed by Rogue Factor and published by Nacon. It was announced in April 2022 and originally planned for a 2023 release before being delayed, resurfacing during a PlayStation State of Play in September 2024. The game launched on September 4, 2025, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Creative direction comes from Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, previously known for his work as art director on Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
The story follows Rémi, a former UN peacekeeper who returns to Hadea, his homeland, torn apart by civil war and a mysterious phenomenon known as the Calamity. Smuggled out of the country as a child, Rémi comes back searching for his parents and answers about his own identity. Creative director Simon Girard has described the narrative as intended to unfold like a novel, where nothing is accidental, and every detail carries weight. Rémi never fights other humans directly, but destroyed villages, traumatized survivors, and political murals shape the world around him just as much as the supernatural threat does.
Combat is entirely melee-based, with no firearms in the game. Rémi fights using swords, spears, and axes, each carrying its own attack style and speed against enemies called Hollow Walkers. Health doesn't regenerate on its own, and stamina, while it recovers gradually, has a maximum tied directly to current health, meaning a wounded Rémi hits weaker and tires faster. A companion drone called KAPI can be used to distract enemies or unleash special attacks during a fight. According to the developers, combat and exploration each make up roughly half of the overall experience.
Exploration skips modern conveniences most action games rely on. There are no maps, no quest markers, and no HUD guiding the player toward objectives. Instead, players are expected to observe their surroundings, take their own mental notes, and piece together where to go next, a structure meant to bring back the feeling of genuinely getting lost in a world rather than following a trail. The game holds a Metacritic score of 78 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
