Ace Combat 8 Story Puts You Behind a Dead Ace's Name

The Ace Combat 8 story opens with a loss and a cover-up. In July 2029, the Republic of Sotoa has overrun the Federation of Central Usea; its capital, Theve, is occupied, and the country's most famous pilot dies early. You take his name and his squadron, and the Ace Combat 8 characters around you keep that setup paying off.
Our Ace Combat 8 review gave the game a 9/10, and its campaign section came down to one point: Joker Flight carries the campaign. This piece gives that point more room, with the cast, the propaganda angle, and the spots where the writing dips. Early-game details only, no ending spoilers.
Ace Combat 8 Story Summary

The Ace Combat 8 story is set in 2029 in Strangereal, after the Lighthouse War, during Sotoa's invasion of the Federation of Central Usea (FCU).
You start in Jan Cope's back seat and inherit his Wings of Theve identity after a surprise attack kills him.
Propaganda is the core idea: the Wings of Theve was a manufactured ace from the start, and now you're the one keeping the myth alive.
Joker Flight is Baxter (Professor), Tasha, and Coster (Noise), with radio chatter in every sortie.
Story scenes play in first person, in a series first.
Across 30 missions, the weak spots are filler sorties and cutscenes that run long.
The Ace Combat 8 Story Starts With a Dead Legend
Sotoa's blitzkrieg wrecks the FCU's military and navy, and Theve falls. What's left of the resistance runs off the Endurance, an aging carrier crowded with scattered soldiers and civilians.
Jan Cope is the Wings of Theve, a legendary ace and the capital's symbol of hope. Bandai Namco's official character roster admits the legend was never real. Cope was picked for a manufactured ace project on the strength of his evasive flying, and off duty he was a charming gambler who didn't always pay his debts.
You and David Jenkins come aboard as survivors pulled from the ocean after a nearby battle. According to Bandai Namco's own overview, you then fly as Cope's navigator on a routine patrol; a surprise attack shoots you down, and Cope can't get free of the wreck. You're tapped to take over his flight identity and become Joker 1, callsign Rex, the new Wings of Theve.
Every win you score feeds a story the brass sells to the whole country, which gives victories a strange weight. The game raises that idea and then doesn't push it as far as it could.
Who Is in Joker Flight?

Joker Flight is four pilots: you as Joker 1, plus three wingmen whose radio chatter fills every sortie.
Pilot | Callsign | Rank and slot | Background |
|---|---|---|---|
Player | Rex | Joker 1 | Cope's former back-seater, now the Wings of Theve |
Ellington Baxter | Professor | Lt. Commander, Joker 2 | Former university lecturer and the flight's calm hand |
Tasha | Tasha | Ensign, Joker 3 | Star pilot of Yuktobania's Zvezda aerobatic team |
William Coster | Noise | Lt. Junior Grade, Joker 4 | Diehard rock fan with a music player in the cockpit |
Baxter holds the flight together, and Tasha calls him Teach. The two often study together in the mess. She was only on the Endurance to shoot publicity footage when the war broke out, so a show pilot ends up flying real combat.
Coster rarely speaks, but he can keep up with Tasha's extreme maneuvers and provide cover. Their banter gives the campaign its pulse, and the melodrama lands harder than it has any right to. Destructoid's reviewer went as far as calling Tasha and Baxter iconic.
Life Aboard the Endurance
Kate Evans, callsign Little Bee, leads Queen Flight and does whatever she can to keep pilots from both flights alive, bandages and all. Jessica Pike, the XO, runs carrier operations in place of the easygoing Captain Gordon and will recruit civilians to cover the crew shortage.
Major David Jenkins, the chief mechanic, came aboard with you after the same rescue and knows Sotoan capabilities from the front line. Adelina Santos, the ship's doctor, is well liked by the crew and seems unaware of it. A social media manager named D.D. handles the propaganda side, a reminder that your legend is someone's job.
Between missions, story scenes play in first person. You can look around, salute, shake hands, and answer short yes-or-no prompts.
On the enemy side, the community wiki lists general Carmille Tewy and her Lux Lunae squadron, led in the air by an ace flying as Shadow 22. Those names aren't on Bandai Namco's official roster yet, so treat them as community labels.
Where the Ace Combat 8 Story Loses Altitude
Pacing is the clearest problem. Across 30 missions, the big set pieces (city counterattacks, defense platforms, land battleships) get split up by sorties that feel like padding, and two filler missions in a row stall the campaign.
Cutscenes divided critics. TechRadar's reviewer found them long and light on payoff, and said the commander and the propaganda officer lean on clichés. Destructoid praised the writing as a sharp take on war, but noted the yes-or-no prompts barely matter and some scenes fade out at odd moments.
Destructoid also flagged anime-style jokes and grunts that undercut the darker beats, and TechRadar compared the drama to a telenovela. Steam reception has been weaker than the critic scores, though the complaints reported so far center on crashes and the pre-order bonus setup.
FAQs About Ace Combat 8

Final Words
The sharpest choice in the Ace Combat 8 story is who it picks as the hero. You were the guy in the back seat, and now you're flying under a name that was fake even when its owner was alive. Series protagonists rarely talk, and here the silence fits: the people who knew Jan Cope end up giving you a personality.
Joker Flight works the same way. The radio chatter between Baxter, Tasha and Noise sticks around after the credits longer than any plot twist.
Will Bandai Namco ever dig deeper into the propaganda theme? The game sets it up with real weight and mostly leaves it on the table. On a first run, listen to the radio during the quieter missions, since most of the character work hides there.
