Fortnite Save the World Free to Play: What You Need to Know

Fortnite Save the World is the original game mode that started it all. Released in paid early access back in July 2017, it's a co-op PvE experience where players build defenses and fight off waves of zombie-like enemies, long before Battle Royale took over and became the face of the franchise. Despite never getting the same level of attention, Save the World has remained a paid mode within a free-to-play game for nearly nine years.

That's changing. Epic Games has confirmed that Save the World will go free-to-play on April 16, 2026, opening the mode to anyone on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch 2 at no cost. It's a significant shift, and there are a few things worth knowing before you jump in.

In this article, we'll explore everything you need to know about Fortnite Save the World going free-to-play, including what to expect as a new player and what changes for those who already own it.

Supported Platforms

When Save the World goes free-to-play on April 16, it will be available on the following platforms:

  1. PC

  2. PlayStation 4

  3. PlayStation 5

  4. Xbox One

  5. Xbox Series X|S

  6. Nintendo Switch 2

  7. Cloud gaming services

It's worth noting that Save the World is not coming to the original Nintendo Switch, smartphones, or tablets, including through cloud gaming. So if you were planning to play on mobile, that won't be an option.

What Happens to Those Who Purchased Save the World?

If you already own Save the World, Epic isn't leaving you empty-handed. As a thank-you for nine years of support, existing players will receive the following items automatically on April 16:

  • 1x Hero Supercharger – Promote a Hero beyond Level 50

  • 1x Weapon Supercharger – Promote a weapon beyond Level 50

  • 1x Trap Supercharger – Promote a Trap beyond Level 50

  • 5x Survivor Superchargers – Promote Survivors beyond Level 50

  • 1x Hero Recruitment Voucher – Recruit a Hero of your choice

  • 1x Weapon Research Voucher – Unlock a weapon of your choice

  • 10,000 Gold – Spend in the Event Store (to be renamed "the Exchange") for valuable items

These rewards are granted automatically on April 16, so there's nothing you need to do to claim them. It's also worth noting that Epic paused new purchases of Save the World on March 11, so the window to buy it before the free launch has already closed. Existing players can still access the mode normally in the meantime.

What Happens to Founders and V-Bucks?

Founders, players who purchased Save the World during its early access period, will continue earning V-Bucks through Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense Missions, and existing Challenges. That doesn't change with the free-to-play transition. New players jumping in for free, however, will not have access to V-Bucks earnings. That perk stays exclusive to Founders, so if you were already grinding dailies, nothing about that loop is changing.

Pre-Registration Rewards

Ahead of the April 16 launch, Epic is running a community pre-registration campaign with rewards tied to three milestones. To participate, head to the official Save the World website and click Register, then sign in with your Epic Games account. The milestones and their rewards are:

  • 300,000 registrations – Save the World Jess Banner

  • 700,000 registrations – Kyle's Construction Spray

  • 1,000,000 registrations – Snowstrike Hero

The Banner and Spray are distributed as each milestone is hit, while the Snowstrike Hero is handed out on April 16. New players will receive it after completing the in-game tutorial, while current players who pre-register get it earlier. It's also worth noting that the Snowstrike Hero is exclusive to Save the World, it can't be used in Battle Royale or any other Fortnite mode.

Final Words

Save the World going free-to-play on April 16 is a straightforward win for anyone who has been curious about the mode but never wanted to pay for it. If you haven't pre-registered yet, it's worth doing before the launch to make sure you don't miss out on the community rewards.
