Is Far Cry 6 worth buying now that Ubisoft has walked away from it? The answer got easier the day the studio stopped, and Far Cry 6 in 2026 is a closed box. Every expansion shipped, and nobody is waiting on a patch that fixes the launch complaints.
Far Cry 6 came out on 7 October 2021 and ran through two years of content. Ubisoft then confirmed in November 2023, through the official Far Cry account, that the team had stopped making updates and that online services would carry on.

Yara and the Guns Still Deliver
Yara is the strongest open world the series has produced. The seven regions genuinely differ: Madrugada is tobacco fields and back roads, Valle de Oro is ranches and farmland, El Este is mountain and jungle. Horses, boats and a wingsuit keep travel quick.
The homemade Resolver weapons separate Far Cry 6 gameplay from every other island shooter. A CD launcher, a silenced nail gun and a shield-mounted shotgun change how a fight starts rather than adding damage. Supremo backpacks stack on top, and Volta alone, an EMP blast that drops enemies and kills alarms, rewrites how you open a base.
Amigos do work no weapon can. Chorizo the dachshund pulls guards out of position, Boom Boom marks every enemy in a camp, and Oluso the panther removes people silently. Pair one with a Supremo and most bases crack several ways.
The Two Systems That Wear You Down
Ammo matching draws the most complaints. Every soldier wears one of a handful of armour types. The game wants you to scan a camp, then swap to soft target rounds for unarmoured troops, armour-piercing for helmets and blast rounds for vehicles. It works, and it means pausing several times inside one firefight.
Gear levels compound that. Weapons, clothing and enemies all carry a rank, so a fight you could win through positioning turns into a bullet sponge when your rifle sits behind the region. The loot numbers push everyone toward the same dull rifle.
Repetition is the third knock. Checkpoints repeat their layout across the map, and the soldiers guarding them rarely flank. Bases and the Yaran Stories are far better built, so follow those and treat checkpoints as scenery.
Is Far Cry 6 Worth Buying in 2026
Yes, for the right buyer, and the finished state of the game is what tips it. Everything shipped: the Far Cry 6 DLC episodes Vaas Insanity, Pagan Control and Joseph Collapse, the Lost Between Worlds expansion from December 2022, and the weekly Insurgencies and six Special Operations.
New Game Plus arrived with Title Update 6 in November 2022 and restarts the campaign with most of your equipment, so a second run gives you the toys without the gear grind. That same update opened all of Isla Santuario as a free trial with your progress saved, which is the cheapest way to answer this question for yourself.
The catch is the story. Giancarlo Esposito is superb as Anton Castillo and appears in a fraction of the runtime, and the revolution around him never builds to much. Buy this for the sandbox and you get dozens of hours. Buy it for a narrative payoff and you finish disappointed. So buy it if you liked Far Cry 5 and want more of that with better guns, or if you have someone for Far Cry 6 co-op. Wait if bloated loot systems put you off.

A game nobody updates any more carries one odd advantage: nothing you read about it goes stale. Every strength and flaw described here is what sits on the disc, and no seasonal reset is going to move any of it.
That also kills the usual advice to wait and see. If the free Isla Santuario trial grabs you in its first hour, it will keep doing that for another forty, and if it leaves you cold, no patch is going to change your mind later.
The next Far Cry has no date either. Ubisoft told investors in May 2026 that a new entry would arrive before the end of March 2029, so Yara is where the series stops for years yet. For anyone who never got around to it, that makes this a good moment to take the trip.
