Is Fortnite Save the World Free? Everything to Know

Fortnite Save the World is the mode that started it all. It launched in July 2017 as a paid co-op survival game where players build forts and fight off waves of zombie-like enemies called Husks. Battle Royale came later, overshadowed it almost immediately, and Save the World spent years as the forgotten side of Fortnite that required a separate purchase to access.

That changed on April 16, 2026, when Epic Games made Save the World free for everyone. In this article, we'll explore everything you need to know about Fortnite Save the World going free, what the mode actually includes, and what to expect before jumping in.

Fortnite Save the World is a co-op PvE survival game where up to four players team up to complete missions, gather resources, build fortifications, and fight off waves of zombie-like creatures called Husks. It launched in July 2017 as the original Fortnite experience, long before Battle Royale existed.

The core gameplay loop revolves around defending objectives from incoming storm waves. Players collect materials during the day, set up traps and structures, and hold their ground when the Husks arrive. Progress carries over between missions, with heroes, weapons, and traps all upgradeable over time.

Is Fortnite Save the World Free?

Yes, Save the World went free-to-play on April 16, 2026. Before that, it had been a paid mode since its early access launch in 2017, with the original Founder's Pack priced at $39.99.

The original plan was actually to make Save the World free-to-play as early as 2018, but Epic shelved that plan in favor of a paid release in 2020. It took until 2026 for Epic to finally follow through. Players can now download and access the core experience without needing to purchase a Founder's Pack or any paid bundle. The mode is available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Cloud, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The full Save the World experience is available for free. That includes the entire campaign, all gameplay systems, co-op missions, and progression mechanics like hero upgrades, weapon schematics, and trap building.

Save the World now appears as one of Fortnite's main modes in the Discovery section of the lobby for all players. There's no separate download or additional step required beyond having Fortnite installed. All you need to do is:

  1. Launch the game and scroll down to the Discover section.

  2. Look for Save the World in the mode list and select it.

Epic is also running a crossover event between Save the World and Battle Royale until June 5, where players who earn 350,000 XP in Save the World can unlock the Jess Outfit for their locker. Jess and Penny are also available as quest givers in Battle Royale during the event, with their own exclusive rewards.

Can You Earn V-Bucks in Save the World?

Only players who purchased Save the World as Founders before it became free can still earn V-Bucks through gameplay. New players who start playing now do not earn V-Bucks from missions or daily rewards.

For Founder's Pack owners, players can earn up to 100 V-Bucks a day through Daily Quests, with the ability to stack up to three quests for 300 V-Bucks if missed, along with additional V-Bucks through Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense Missions, and more.

New players instead earn X-Ray Tickets, which are used to purchase Llamas and other items in the in-game shop. The Founder's Pack was discontinued on June 29, 2020, and cannot be purchased through the Epic Games Store or console storefronts. It does appear on third-party resellers at prices ranging from $200 to $400 or more, but the cost far outweighs any V-Bucks you'd earn back through gameplay.
