All Minecraft Games in Order, by Release and Timeline

All Minecraft Games in Order, by Release and Timeline

Lining up all the Minecraft games in order looks like a two-minute job until you count the Minecraft spin-offs. The sandbox itself has sold well over 300 million copies. Around it, Mojang and its partners have released two Telltale story seasons, an augmented reality phone game, two Diablo-style dungeon crawlers, and a strategy game about a piglin invasion. One of them no longer exists, two left digital stores years ago, and the newest arrived on September 29, 2026.

This page lists every main Minecraft game and every bigger spin-off by release date, with the developer, platforms, player count, and our verdict for each one. The Minecraft games release order matters less than in most series, since only two pairs of games share a story, and the table shows where each one sits. If you want any of them on PC or console, our Minecraft games collection has keys for the base game, Dungeons, Legends, Story Mode, and Minecraft Dungeons II.

Looking for the Minecraft games in chronological order? Mojang has never published one timeline for the whole series, and the sandbox, Story Mode, Dungeons, and Legends each tell their own tale. Play Minecraft: Story Mode before Season Two, which picks up Jesse's story and can import your Season One save. Play Minecraft Dungeons before Minecraft Dungeons II, which continues after the defeat of the Arch-Illager. Legends has no confirmed spot in any timeline, so slot it in whenever you like.

Information

Developer

Mojang Studios (created by Markus Persson)

Release Date

May 17, 2009 (first public build), November 18, 2011 (full release, Java)

Players

1 to many on servers and Realms, up to 4 in console split-screen

Platforms

PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android (plus older consoles)

Protagonist

Steve, Alex and seven other default skins, or any skin you make

Minecraft drops you into a world made of blocks with no instructions and no plot to follow. In Survival, you punch trees, craft tools, dig for iron and diamonds, and build a shelter before the first night brings zombies and creepers to your door. Creative hands you every block with no health bar, and Hardcore gives you a single life. The closest thing to an ending is the Ender Dragon, waiting in the End after a trip through the Nether.

The game started as Markus Persson's side project and reached its 1.0 release at MineCon in November 2011. Today it comes in two versions: Java Edition on PC, home of the big modding scene, and Bedrock Edition on consoles, mobile and Windows, with crossplay between all of them. PC players get both in one purchase through Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition. Free updates keep arriving, from the Nether overhaul in 2020 to the smaller game drops Mojang now ships several times a year.

My Verdict: The best-selling game ever made, and still the one every player should own first. Grab Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition on PC so you can play with friends on either version.

Developer

Telltale Games, with Mojang

Release Date

October 13, 2015 (Episode 1) to September 13, 2016 (Episode 8)

Players

1

Platforms

PC, Mac, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, Apple TV

Protagonist

Jesse (voiced by Patton Oswalt or Catherine Taber)

Minecraft: Story Mode turns the sandbox into a choose-your-path adventure with a real cast. You play Jesse, an ordinary builder who sets out with friends to find the Order of the Stone, the four legendary heroes who once slew the Ender Dragon. A man named Ivor has unleashed the Wither Storm, a monster that swallows whole chunks of the world, and Jesse's crew hopes the Order can stop it. You pick Jesse's look and gender, which also sets the voice, and your choices decide who trusts you.

Like other Telltale games, it plays through dialogue choices, quick-time events, and light crafting scenes. The first five episodes wrap up the Wither Storm arc, and the three Adventure Pass episodes from 2016 send Jesse's crew through portals into new worlds. Telltale's closure in 2018 pulled the game from most stores, and Mojang ended support for both seasons on June 25, 2019. Mojang told owners to download every episode before that date, so whether a copy still runs today depends on the platform and what you saved back then.

My Verdict: A warm, funny Minecraft story that works best for younger players and families. Play it before Season Two, which can import your choices.

3. Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two (2017)

3. Minecraft: Story Mode Season Two (2017)

Information

Developer

Telltale Games, with Mojang

Release Date

July 11, 2017 (Episode 1) to December 19, 2017 (Episode 5)

Players

1

Platforms

PC, PS4, Xbox One, iOS (later Android, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch)

Protagonist

Jesse (voiced by Patton Oswalt or Catherine Taber)

Season Two brings Jesse back as the mayor of Beacontown. On a trip with Petra, Jesse finds a Prismarine gauntlet at the bottom of a pit, and it locks onto Jesse's hand. That draws the attention of the Admin, a godlike figure with control over the world itself. He shows up first as a Prismarine Colossus, later as a snowman, and runs Jesse through a series of challenges at his ice palace.

The five episodes ran from July to December 2017, and you can import your season one save, so relationships and outcomes from the Wither Storm arc follow you in. Critics scored it about level with season one. The end-of-support notice from June 2019 covered Season Two as well, and since it never got a Netflix release, it's the harder of the two seasons to track down.

My Verdict: A solid follow-up for anyone season one hooked, if you can still get hold of a copy. Play it right after season one so the import pays off.

4. Minecraft Earth (2019)

Details

Information

Developer

Mojang Studios

Release Date

October 17, 2019 (early access in Iceland and New Zealand), December 11, 2019 (global), shut down June 30, 2021

Players

Free-to-play, with shared builds and adventures for nearby players

Platforms

iOS, Android

Protagonist

Your own player skin

Minecraft Earth took the Pokémon Go idea and gave it blocks. You walked around your real neighborhood, tapped on resources and mobs that appeared on the map, and collected them for your builds. Buildplates let you place a creation on a table through your phone camera and then blow it up to full size in a park or a street.

The game stayed in early access for its whole life. In January 2021, Mojang released the final build and announced the shutdown, with the COVID-19 pandemic and its limits on moving around outdoors as the main reason. Support ended on June 30, 2021, and the servers went dark with it, so there's no way to play it today.

My Verdict: A clever experiment that arrived at the worst possible time. Nobody can play it anymore, so it's here for completeness only.

5. Minecraft Dungeons (2020)

5. Minecraft Dungeons (2020)

Details

Information

Developer

Mojang Studios and Double Eleven

Release Date

May 26, 2020 (Steam on September 22, 2021)

Players

1–4 local and online co-op, crossplay

Platforms

PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch (playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S)

Protagonist

Your hero (Steve, Ale,x and many other skins)

Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon crawler in the Diablo mold that works well for families and couch co-op. Archie, an illager shunned by the villagers, finds the Orb of Dominance, turns into the Arch-Illager, and raises an army to conquer the villages of the Overworld. Up to four heroes fight through swamps, mines, and castles to reach him. The Orb itself becomes the final boss, and Archie gets a kinder ending than most villains.

There are no classes. Your build comes from a melee weapon, a ranged weapon, your armor, and three artifacts, plus the enchantments you buy with points earned by leveling up. Six DLC packs followed between July 2020 and July 2021, from Jungle Awakens to Echoing Void, and the Ultimate Edition bundles all of them. The final content update arrived in November 2022. When Mojang confirmed in September 2023 that the team had moved on, the game had passed 25 million players, the biggest audience of any Minecraft spin-off.

My Verdict: The easiest way to get a mixed group of players into one game for an evening. Buy the Minecraft Dungeons Ultimate Edition so you get every DLC area before moving on to the sequel.

6. Minecraft Legends (2023)

6. Minecraft Legends (2023)

Details

Information

Developer

Mojang Studios and Blackbird Interactive

Release Date

April 18, 2023

Players

1–4 online co-op campaign, up to 8 in team PvP

Platforms

PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch

Protagonist

The Hero (your choice of skin)

Minecraft Legends tells the tale of a piglin invasion. Hordes from the Nether pour through portals into the Overworld, and three beings called the Hosts summon a hero to rally the villagers and mobs against them. You burn down piglin bases, defeat their bosses one by one, and finish the job with the Great Hog. Mojang frames the whole story as a legend, with no tie to any other game on this list.

It plays as a mix of third-person action and light real-time strategy. You ride a mount, send allays to gather wood and stone, build walls and towers, and lead golems, zombies, and creepers into battle. The campaign works solo or in co-op, and Versus mode pits two teams of up to four against each other. Reviews were mixed, and Mojang announced on January 10, 2024, that no more updates would come.

My Verdict: An interesting idea that never found a big audience. Pick up Minecraft Legends on sale if you like strategy and want to see the Overworld from a general's saddle.

7. Minecraft Dungeons II (2026)

7. Minecraft Dungeons II (2026)

Details

Information

Developer

Mojang Studios and Double Eleven

Release Date

September 29, 2026

Players

1–4 couch, online and mixed co-op, crossplay

Platforms

PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2

Protagonist

Your own hero

Minecraft Dungeons II launched on September 29, 2026, six months after its reveal in March. The story picks up after the Arch-Illager's defeat. Rifts open across the Overworld and sculk spreads with them. Behind it all sits the Illager High Council, a trio made up of the Prime Enchanter, the Supreme Evoker, and the Grand Illusioner. Their corrupted mob armies come from the Sift, a newly found dimension, and taking the fight there is the heroes' goal.

The first game's level select is gone. Dungeons now sit across an open Overworld, with a hub town and portals into the Sift. You can jump, armor runs on a new system, and talismans add passive bonuses to your build. Most critics liked it, and a few called the loop repetitive and the endgame thin. The Deluxe Edition adds the first two DLC packs when they arrive, plus extra cosmetics.

My Verdict: The best Minecraft spin-off yet and the one to play with friends this fall. Get the Minecraft Dungeons II Deluxe Edition if you know you'll stick around for the DLC.

FAQs About Minecraft Games

What order should I play the Minecraft games in?

Release order works fine for the whole series, as the games barely share a story. The only pairs that need a set order are Minecraft: Story Mode before Season Two, and Minecraft Dungeons before Minecraft Dungeons II. Start with the base game if you want to know the mobs and items the spin-offs keep referencing.

How many Minecraft games are there?

Counting the main game and the bigger spin-offs, there are seven Minecraft games. Minecraft Earth has been offline since June 2021, and both Story Mode seasons lost support in 2019. Minecraft Education is a classroom version of the base game, and Minecraft Blast, a puzzle game made with King, has only had limited playtests, so neither gets its own entry.

Is Minecraft Dungeons II connected to Minecraft Dungeons?

Yes, Minecraft Dungeons II is the sequel to Minecraft Dungeons, made by the same two studios, and its story follows the Arch-Illager's defeat. The Illager High Council takes over as the main threat, and the Sift takes the fight beyond the Overworld. Mojang says you don't need to play the first game, though returning players will spot references.

Can you still play Minecraft: Story Mode?

Only if you already own a copy, and even then it depends on the platform. Mojang ended support for both seasons on June 25, 2019, and asked players to download every episode before that date. Season Two is the harder of the two to find.

What is the difference between Minecraft Java and Bedrock?

Java Edition runs on PC, Mac, and Linux and has the largest modding and server community. Bedrock Edition runs on consoles, mobile, and Windows, with crossplay between all those platforms and the Marketplace for add-ons. On PC, one purchase of Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition gets you both.

Is Minecraft Legends still supported?

No. Mojang announced on January 10, 2024, that the game would get no more updates, less than nine months after launch. You can still buy it and play the campaign.

Final Words

The main Minecraft game never ends and never gets a sequel, and it still receives new content 17 years after its first build. Every spin-off is a side trip from a game you're probably still playing. Read in release order, the list shows Mojang trying a new genre every few years and keeping only the ones that click. So far, Dungeons is the only spin-off to earn a second game.

For most players, the base game is the only must-have, and Minecraft Dungeons II is the pick for co-op with friends or kids. Story Mode suits younger players who like stories more than building, and Legends is for strategy fans only.

Nobody outside Mojang knows what the next spin-off will be. Dungeons II has DLC planned, and the studio has said nothing official about a new Legends or Story Mode game. Until something new lands, the sandbox and the two Dungeons games are the best ways to spend time in the Overworld.
