Is Silent Hill Townfall Worth the Hype?

Silent Hill: Townfall arrived on September 24, 2026, and after almost four years of waiting since the reveal, fans want to know one thing: is Silent Hill: Townfall worth the hype? Launch week has already opened a clear gap between critics and Steam players.

We played the full campaign in St. Amelia for our Silent Hill: Townfall review and landed on an 8/10. Here, we set that verdict against critic reception and early Silent Hill: Townfall Steam reviews.

The short answer: yes, for patient players who want slow, heavy horror and can sit through a frustrating stealth stretch in the middle. PC players with performance worries have a good case for waiting.

Silent Hill Townfall Worth Summary

Silent Hill Townfall Worth Summary
  • Our verdict: 8/10, a strong pick for fans of P.T., Alien: Isolation and the quieter older Silent Hill games.

  • Critics agree: reception from outlets has been strongly positive, with atmosphere and puzzles leading the praise.

  • Players are cooler: early Steam reviews are more divided, and PC performance leads the complaints.

  • Length: 10–14 hours for a first run, with five endings (two locked to New Game Plus).

  • Platforms: available now on PS5 and PC.

Where the Silent Hill: Townfall Hype Came From

Konami revealed Townfall at its Silent Hill Transmission broadcast in October 2022, next to the Silent Hill 2 remake and Silent Hill f. After roughly a decade without a new mainline game, a whole slate of projects in one stream felt like a real comeback, and Townfall was the most mysterious of the bunch.

Screen Burn Interactive, known as No Code until a July 2025 rebrand, made Stories Untold and Observation, two slow-burn games that build tension through screens, terminals and machine interfaces. Having Annapurna Interactive on board as co-publisher added indie credibility.

Then came the pitch: a first-person Silent Hill set in St. Amelia, a fogbound Scottish island village in 1996, with a handheld CRTV replacing the classic radio. Leaving the town of Silent Hill behind for Scotland excited some fans and worried the purists.

Is Silent Hill: Townfall Worth the Hype for Critics and Players?

Critics say yes, and Steam players are less sure. The Silent Hill: Townfall review scores from outlets landed high and stayed consistent, and players were far less generous in the first 24 hours.

Atmosphere and puzzle design drew the most praise, and Tom's Guide went as far as calling it the best the series has been in 25 years. Two complaints kept coming up in critic reviews: unclear stealth detection and The Weight pinning players in hiding spots for minutes.

Steam players point first to traversal stutters, frame drops and crashes, even on strong PC hardware. Repetitive stealth comes next. Konami and Screen Burn say a performance patch is in the works but haven't given a date, and news posts for the game appear on its official Steam page.

Is Silent Hill: Townfall Worth Buying Right Now?

Yes, if you want slow horror and can tolerate some frustrating stealth in the middle of the game. The launch data hasn't changed the answer from our review.

Your handheld CRTV sells the whole thing. You tune through static to spot monsters as distorted shapes, and the device doubles as a storytelling tool. Puzzles sit inside the world, with no floating UI laid over them, and they reward players who read every note.

The Weight is the main reason our score stopped at 8. This nearly invincible creature lumbers through dark basements and kills Simon in one grab, so those sections turn into long stretches of hiding. Add limited enemy variety and clunky melee against groups, and combat fans get very little here.

A first run takes 10–14 hours, and New Game Plus opens two extra endings, so there's a reason to go back once the credits roll. PC players who worry about performance lose nothing by waiting for the promised patch.

FAQs About Silent Hill Townfall Worth

FAQs About Silent Hill Townfall Worth

Is Silent Hill: Townfall worth the hype?

Mostly, yes. Critics have been largely positive and we scored it 8/10. The launch performance on PC and The Weight's stealth sections are the two places where it falls short of the build-up.

How long is Silent Hill: Townfall?

A first playthrough runs about 10 to 14 hours. Three of the five endings are reachable on that run, and the other two need New Game Plus, which moves faster once you know the routes.

What are players criticizing in Silent Hill: Townfall Steam reviews?

PC performance problems are the loudest complaint in negative Steam reviews. Others criticize the repetitive stealth sections.

Final Words

Townfall is a smaller, stranger Silent Hill than the remake. The hype sold a mood, and the mood is exactly what it delivers. Most of the disappointment we've seen comes from players expecting more action, or from a PC build that still needs work.

The Weight will make or break it for most people. Does hiding from a nearly unbeatable stalker sound tense to you? Then the basements will stick with you for weeks. If it sounds like a chore, those hours will drag.

Nobody outside the studio knows when the performance patch arrives. Konami and Screen Burn have acknowledged the problems, and player reception on Steam will probably shift once that update lands.

PS5 players can jump in now. PC players might give it a few weeks, follow the patch notes, and check whether the recent reviews climb before starting the fog walk.
