How the Hollow Knight: Silksong Map Really Works?

You don't find the Hollow Knight: Silksong map; you buy it. Pharloom drops you into unlit corridors with no grid, no position marker, and the only fix is a cartographer who charges for every region she's already drawn. Team Cherry kept that loop from the first game and made it meaner.
Pharloom runs vertically; it branches hard, and four of its areas never reach the world map. Miss the right merchant, and you'll lose hours in corridors you already cleared. Our Hollow Knight: Silksong Review covers how that curve feels in Act 1.
It works on purchase and rest. You buy each area chart from Shakra, the Quill draws your route in, and the map only updates when you sit at a bench. And no, you don’t have to play Hollow Knight first. Below is the full cost of that map system.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Map Summary

You buy the Hollow Knight: Silksong map region by region, at 40 to 90 Rosaries per area chart.
The Quill costs 50 Rosaries and is the item that fills your map in.
The Hollow Knight Wiki counts 26 areas in Outer Pharloom plus 7 Citadel sub-areas, and four areas never reach the world map.
Fast travel splits into 12 Bellway stations and 7 Ventrica stations, joined at Grand Bellway.
How the Hollow Knight: Silksong Map Works

Shakra is the whole system. She takes the travelling cartographer role Cornifer held in Hollow Knight, and her throwing rings in the scenery are the tell that she's set up nearby. Each area chart runs 40 to 90 Rosaries, and she hands over an incomplete sketch.
Filling that sketch in takes the Quill, priced at 50 Rosaries. Without it the map stays an outline of wherever you currently stand, which is close to useless in a kingdom built on branching shafts. A free Quill also sits on Trobbio's desk in Acts 2 and 3.
Rooms only get drawn when you sit down. A bench commits everything you walked since the last rest, so dying deep in unmapped ground costs you the cartography along with the Rosaries. Annoying? Yes, and also the point. The Compass, another 70 Rosaries, adds a marker showing where you are.
Pins come last and they earn the detour. Bench, Bellway and Vendor Pins cost 60 Rosaries each and place themselves once you find the spot, and Ventrica Pins run 80. Manual marker sets cost 40 to 120 Rosaries and give you nine markers each.

Every Region on the Pharloom Map
Team Cherry has never published a region count. The Hollow Knight Wiki, where most Silksong map areas data comes from, lists 26 areas across Outer Pharloom and 7 sub-areas inside the Citadel, so 33 named places is the number the community works from.
Four of those never make the world map: Moss Grotto, The Mist, Wisp Thicket and Red Memory. Moss Grotto is the opening stretch before the Marrow, so losing it hurts less than the other three.
Section of Pharloom | Examples | Map note |
|---|---|---|
Early tunnels | The Marrow, Deep Docks, Far Fields | Shakra sells the charts |
Mid kingdom | Greymoor, Bellhart, Shellwood | Bellhart doubles as a hub |
The Citadel | High Halls, Cogwork Core, Whiteward | Charts come from machines |
Silksong's Steam page frames the run as an ascent to a citadel at the top of the world. You climb more than you spread sideways, so a missing chart three regions down strands you in a stairwell you have no memory of.
Bellways and Ventrica Stations Cut Your Backtracking
Silksong fast travel opens after the Bell Beast in the Marrow, and the 12 Bellway stations wire the outer kingdom together from there. Bone Bottom and the Marrow come free after that fight. Every station after costs 40 to 80 Rosaries.
Inside the Citadel and the Underworks you swap networks. Seven Ventrica stations handle that upper stretch, most at 80 Rosaries, with Terminus turning free once any other tube goes live. Grand Bellway is the seam where both systems meet.
Coverage stays patchy on purpose, so route around the gaps rather than trusting a bell to be close. Shakra's pin set pays for itself here, since a map with every Bellway flagged turns a twenty-minute walk back into a thirty-second hop. The official Silksong site puts the enemy count above 200, and most of them sit between you and the next station.

Final Words
The Pharloom map is a difficulty setting dressed as a menu screen. Team Cherry charges for orientation at the point where you have the least money, so your first hours become a choice between knowing where you are and surviving there. Buy the Quill before your second chart and Act 1 gets kinder.
Watch the scenery for throwing rings. That cue is the difference between catching Shakra in a region and hunting her down in Bone Bottom four hours later.
Red Memory and The Mist sit outside the world map for reasons nobody at the studio has given, and players are split on whether that is a design statement or an oversight. Until Team Cherry says otherwise, sketch those two on paper like it is 1997.
