This is my Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign review, written after I played all 16 missions on PC. I started the day Campaign Early Access opened and replayed my favorite missions on harder settings once the credits rolled. The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign is the strongest Call of Duty story I've played in years. A scared young soldier and an old operator with nothing left to lose carry it the whole way.
Infinity Ward sets the war on the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea invading the South, and threads Captain Price's revenge hunt through New York, Paris, and Mumbai. The full game launches on October 23, 2026, and Activision opened the campaign a week earlier for digital pre-orders, as its Campaign Early Access announcement laid out.
Below, you'll find my take on the story, the open Stranded mission, the reworked melee, how it ran on my PC, and whether I'd buy it.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Summary
Verdict: The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign is the series' best story in years, with Park's war in Korea as its heart.
Structure:16 missions, mostly linear, with Park and Price taking most of them.
Stranded is the standout, the only open mission, with a Base Camp, lock puzzles, supply crates, and targets you tackle in any order.
Melee now has blocks, parries, and counters, and the counter timing felt inconsistent between fights.
PC: the Beenox port ran smoothly for me; it needs TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and a 115 GB SSD install.
Single-player only, no co-op, with four difficulties from Recruit to Veteran, plus Realism after one clear.
Park's War Is The Best Story Here
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign opens on Private Park Hyun-Jun, a young South Korean soldier who has never seen combat. In Mayhem, an EMP knocks out Hajin City, and the invasion starts that same night. Park spends the mission holding positions with his squad and ends it by firing an RPG into a fuel truck to bring a tunnel down. Young Mazino plays him as someone barely holding it together. By Losing Ground, where Sierra-1 holds a café and then retreats over a collapsing bridge, I knew Jae, Chow, Dunn, and Lieutenant West by voice alone.
Price's half runs colder. Barry Sloane plays him as an outlaw now, working outside any chain of command and hunting Makarov's people. Out in the Cold has me tailing Milena Romanova through a New York nightclub before a knife fight with Makarov. From there, Price falls in with cartel leader Valeria Garza and crosses paths with Phillip Graves. The story jumps back and forth in time between the two leads, and I never lost track of where I was.
Following Orders was the hardest mission for me to sit through. I played a North Korean soldier hunting a defector in a border village, using contraband as leverage on the villagers. Optional dialogue prompts let me calm people down or lean on them, and I could also just raise my gun. None of those prompts change where the story goes, so they work as texture. The mission sets out to make you uncomfortable, and it did.
Mads Mikkelsen plays the Archer, leader of the Konni PMC, and every scene he gets is excellent. So why cast him and then keep him off-screen so much? That's my one real complaint about the writing. The ending closes Price's story for good, and it hit me harder than I expected, but the last fight felt brief for everything the game spent building toward it.

Stranded Is The Campaign's Best Mission

MW4 Stranded is the tenth mission and the only open one in the campaign. Park's transport goes down over North Korea in Survivors, and Stranded drops him into snowbound mountains behind enemy lines. Three targets sit on the map: a jamming station, a SAM site, and a bunker. I could hit them in any order, and the mission keeps its own save, so a long session never feels risky. It plays like a taste of the DMZ mode that sits beside the campaign.
Scavenging is the whole point. Shipping containers sit behind combination locks, and yellow supply crates hide around the map. Supplies repair suppressed weapons at Base Camp, craft lethal equipment, or call in a mortar strike. I left the SAM site for last and rolled in with a repaired rifle and a mortar ready, and the fight felt earned. Fast travel exists if you want to skip the scavenging, at the cost of going in with weaker gear.
The lock puzzles wore thin after the first handful. Still, one open mission built this carefully beats the stack of Open Combat Missions from Modern Warfare III. The snow and the quiet also give Park's story a breather before the big assaults that follow.
The New Melee Is Fun But Fussy
Out in the Cold teaches the new melee system: attacks, blocks, parries, and counters. The kitchen fight in that mission lets me clear a room with bottles and takedowns without firing a shot. The alley knife fight with Makarov plays like a boss duel, and Gone Dark has its own knife fight later on. When the timing clicks, these fights are a highlight.
The counter window seemed to shift from one fight to the next, and a parry that worked against one enemy came in late against the next. On Veteran, that inconsistency cost me more restarts than any firefight did. Reading the lunge animation helped only partly.
Gunplay is punchy and loud, and the set pieces hit harder than anything else in the reboot. Counter Attack is a beach assault to retake Hajin, marking targets for friendly vehicles to hit. Entrenched, which some players saw in the beta, has me burning a BMP with thermite in the trenches. In Gone Dark I play Gaz, clearing a blacked-out building in Mumbai with thermal night vision. Decapitation breaches the palace under night vision.
Driving the armored truck through Paris in Traffic felt loose, and the chase seemed to stretch and snap back to keep enemy cars close. The new climbing dropped me off ledges a couple of times. Difficulty runs: Recruit, Regular, Hardened, and Veteran. Finishing the campaign once opens Realism, which strips the HUD and markers and turns friendly fire on.

The PC Port Runs Clean

Beenox handles the PC version, and getting in takes some setup. The game requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, a CPU with AVX, and 115 GB on an SSD. My first boot sat through a long shader compile. Advanced Shader Delivery, which ships precompiled shaders on supported platforms, depends on an NVIDIA driver Activision said would arrive before launch. Without it, plan for a wait on a GeForce card.
Activision's PC specs post lists a Recommended tier built around an RTX 3060 Ti for 90 fps in multiplayer at High. My RTX 4080 sits well above that and carries the 16 GB of video memory the top Ray Tracing tier asks for. That tier targets high-quality ray tracing at 4K with upscaling. Ray tracing covers reflections, shadows, and lighting in the campaign, and the night missions are where it shows most.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 PC performance was smooth for me in every mission with ray tracing on. DLSS 4.5 is there for GeForce cards, alongside FSR Redstone and XeSS 3. I had no crashes across the campaign. The menu holds over 800 settings, including a PC-only Enhanced FOV option. The built-in benchmark runs a simulated multiplayer sequence, so it says little about the campaign.
Is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Worth Buying?
Yes, if the campaign is why you buy Call of Duty. This is the story I've wanted from the rebooted series since it started, and it ends Price's arc properly. Anyone who skipped the last couple of campaigns should come back for this one.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches as a standalone purchase on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Activision confirmed in its launch post that it won't join Game Pass until Holiday 2027. The campaign is short for a full-price game. At full price, I'd only buy it for the story if that's the main thing I want from the series. Bugs were rare in my run, so the state of the game is no reason to hold off.
If you play mostly for multiplayer, wait for my multiplayer review before you decide. Game Pass players who only want the story can wait it out too. A sale will make the short runtime much easier to swallow. The official Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 page carries the current editions.

Final Words
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 surprised me most with how much it cares about people on the other side of the war. The North Korean missions are uncomfortable on purpose, and they make Park's fight feel like more than a shooting gallery.
If Infinity Ward carries the Stranded design into DMZ, the extraction mode has a strong base to build on. If the melee timing gets a patch, the knife fights become the series' best close-quarters moments outright.
I still want more of the Archer, and I still want the Paris chase fixed. Neither stopped me from starting it again the moment it ended.
