Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Melee Is Fun but Fussy

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 melee is the new system in the campaign, and on Veteran it's the one most likely to send you back to a checkpoint. Blocks, parries, counters, and takedowns carry a handful of scripted fights, and on higher Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 difficulty settings the timing gets strict fast.
Our Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign review called the new melee fun but fussy, and every step up in difficulty makes the fussy part louder. The fights are short. Across the 16 missions, the set pieces around them do most of the heavy lifting.
Below, you'll find how the melee works, where each fight sits, what every difficulty changes, and which set pieces stand out.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Melee Summary
Melee basics: block just before a hit lands to parry, then counter. In fistfights, a takedown prompt appears after a few clean hits.
Timing problem: the counter window seems to shift between fights, so timing learned on one opponent can land late on the next.
The Makarov alley fight in mission 2 is the hardest melee test.
Modern Warfare 4 Realism opens after one completion, and YOLO mode gives you one life for the whole campaign.
Set pieces carry the campaign, with Stranded as the one open mission.
How Does Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Melee Work?

You block just before a strike lands to parry, then press attack to counter. On controller, that's LT or L2 for the block and RT or R2 for the counter. Out in the Cold, the second mission, introduces the system, and in the Makarov fistfight a takedown prompt shows up after roughly three solid hits.
Knife fights add their own layer, with directional slashes, blade locks, and quick-time openings. Fistfights reward patience: let the opponent swing first, parry, land one or two hits, then back off. Overcommit against Makarov, and he blocks, which leaves you open.
Press block as the hit arrives. The parry window is narrow, and an early press gets punished.
Our review flagged one problem above the rest: the counter window seems to shift from fight to fight. Watching the lunge animation helped a little, but it never fully fixed the timing for us.

Where the Melee Fights Happen in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
All four of the campaign's big melee fights belong to Captain Price.
Mission | Fight | What it asks of you |
|---|---|---|
2. Out in the Cold | Kitchen brawl | Five enemies, bottles, takedowns, and a melee finish. No shots fired on Hardened or higher earns Safety's On |
2. Out in the Cold | Makarov in the alley | Knife sequence, then a fistfight. A hitless win on Veteran or higher earns Can't Touch This |
7. Gone Dark | Mumbai penthouse knife duel | Slashes, blade locks, parry into counter |
16. Greater Good | Frozen lake finale | Button prompts with no health bar |
Makarov is the hardest of the four. Blocked strikes don't count as hits for the trophy, and neither do hits during cutscenes. Checkpoint reloads are allowed too, so you can learn each phase on its own.
The finale lands softest. It plays as a string of prompts, so the system the campaign spent time teaching barely gets used when the story peaks.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Difficulty Levels, From Recruit to YOLO
Recruit, Regular, Hardened, and Veteran are open from the start. A death on any of them sends you to the last checkpoint, and the pause menu lets you change the setting mid-campaign.
Difficulty | How you get it | What changes |
|---|---|---|
Recruit to Veteran | Available from the start | Checkpoint restarts; Veteran or higher needed for Can't Touch This |
Realism | Finish the campaign once on any difficulty | Veteran with no HUD or markers, friendly fire on |
YOLO | Finish the campaign on Realism | One life, any death restarts from mission 1 |
A full Modern Warfare 4 Realism run earns the Was it worth it? trophy. Trophy guides put it at about 7 hours, on top of roughly 8 hours for a first run with collectibles. YOLO mode also ends the run if you fail an objective, shoot civilians, stray too far from your squad, or hit a teammate.
Players on r/modernwarfare4 reported clearing YOLO before launch. The reward they posted is a Calling Card, though Activision hasn't confirmed it yet.
Melee hurts most on these settings. A Veteran firefight gives you cover and time to reset, and a late parry in the alley means a reload. In YOLO, dying there sends you straight back to mission 1.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Set Pieces Carry the Campaign
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 set pieces are the strongest part of the campaign. They're split between Private Park's war in Korea and Price's off-book hunt, the two arcs on the official campaign page.
Mission | Setting | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
Counter Attack | Hajin City beachfront | Beach assault to retake the city |
Gone Dark | Mumbai high-rise | EMP blackout, building clear under thermal night vision |
Entrenched | Korean trench lines | Thermite on a BMP |
Decapitation | North Korean palace | Night-vision breach |
Stranded, the tenth mission, opens up snowy mountains in North Korea with three sabotage targets, side objectives and a hideout. It's the only stretch that isn't strictly linear.
On Veteran, the melee fights cost us more restarts than any of these firefights did. That includes Mayhem and Losing Ground, where Park's squad fights outnumbered.
FAQs About Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Melee
Final Words
The melee works best as a change of pace. Shooting carries most of the campaign, so a short knife duel lands harder than another room clear. Trouble starts only when difficulty turns those fights into a strict timing check.
How late you press block decides most of these fights. Treat every opponent as a fresh read, since the window seems to move between encounters.
Will Infinity Ward patch the counter timing? Nobody outside the studio knows yet. Our review argued that a fix could turn the knife fights into the series' best close-quarters moments. For a first run, Hardened is the comfortable middle. Switch to Veteran for the alley, then take what you learned into Realism before thinking about YOLO.
