What Is a Kill Block in MW4?

MW4 Kill Block is a multiplayer map that rebuilds itself between matches, so it's the one map you can't memorize. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 builds it from movable sections called slabs, and the Kill Block map snaps into a new layout between matches, with over 500 possible configurations at launch.

At launch, it runs two Gunfight modes, and Infinity Ward plans to add more.

This page explains how the slabs work, how Kill Block Gunfight plays, and what to expect after launch.

MW4 Kill Block Summary

  • MW4 Kill Block is a reconfigurable multiplayer map set in the fictional West Bridge Advanced Military Training Facility.

  • Each match uses three slabs: two End Slabs and one Central Slab, which together form a Combo.

  • Dozens of slabs give more than 500 configurations, and the layout changes between matches.

  • In Gunfight, the Combo changes after every two rounds.

  • Launch modes are 3v3 Gunfight and the new 10v10 Gunfight.

  • The full map is roughly the size of Shoot House from Modern Warfare (2019).

  • Some slabs recreate classics, including Crash, Storage Town, and Shoot House.

  • 6v6 modes and new slabs are planned after launch.

How MW4 Kill Block Slabs Work

Kill Block slabs are rectangular sections of map that slot together like a three-piece puzzle. Activision's Kill Block intel post says every match uses two End Slabs connected to either side of one Central Slab, and the finished layout is called a Combo.

In the fiction, motors and a rail network under the arena swap slabs between matches, driven from eight concrete towers around the compound.

Every slab shares the same footprint. Each End Slab covers one third of the playspace, and openings between slabs let you push from one section into the next. Sightlines often stretch into a neighboring slab, and sometimes across the whole map.

Slabs mock up streets, compounds and urban blocks from shipping containers, timber and fake facades. Named slabs include Ambush, Blacksite, Killhouse, ME-Town, Snow Block and Trench, though Activision's July reveal warned that names could change before launch.

Kill Block Gunfight Modes and Rules

Kill Block Gunfight Modes and Rules

Kill Block Gunfight comes in two sizes at launch: classic 3v3 and the new 10v10. The MW4 launch patch notes list Kill Block as one of 20 launch maps, next to 12 Core maps, three Ground War maps and four standard Gunfight maps.

Gunfight rules stay familiar. Every player gets the same randomized primary, secondary, and equipment, so custom loadouts don’t apply. Rounds are single-life, and teams swap sides after the first round.

If neither team is wiped out before the timer ends, an Overtime Flag appears, and capturing it wins the round. If time runs out without a capture, the team with the health advantage takes it. First to six round wins takes the match.

On Kill Block, the Combo and the loadout both change after every two rounds, so a team that solved one layout has to start over mid-match. Randomized weapons reward broad weapon knowledge, so the MW4 weapons list is worth a skim before you queue.

Classic Slabs, Weather and Spawns

Kill Block mixes new spaces with remakes. Activision names Crash from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Storage Town from Warzone's Verdansk, and Shoot House from Modern Warfare (2019) among the slabs. Most of the rest are new, and none of them appear in the standard MW4 maps list.

Some slabs run weather arrays. Fans spray mist, rain, or snow across the area, which cuts visibility and changes long sightlines. Your weapon even picks up ice or a wet sheen until you reload or swap.

Teams enter through an armory room into their own End Slab, and a perimeter gate closes behind them. In non-Gunfight modes, you spawn at the back of your End Slab, and in Gunfight each team spawns at its gate.

Perimeter walls carry A, B, C, and D sector markers, and slabs carry signs and room labels, so callouts still work on a layout nobody has seen before. How do you call out a room you've never played? Use the wall sector letter first, then the slab sign.

What Comes Next for the Kill Block Map

The launch patch notes confirm that 6v6 modes plus new slabs and configurations are planned after launch.

Infinity Ward also describes the facility as a platform for more multiplayer modes in future seasons, so its playlists will likely grow. Our MW4 Season 1 overview tracks what the first season adds.

You can use the full MW4 movement set in Kill Block. Rooftops, containers, and balconies are all climbable, so vertical routes change with every Combo.

Gunfight is a tough place to level a specific weapon, since loadouts are random. MW4 bot lobbies handle the weapon grind. Call of Duty accounts with unlocks are in place to skip it.

FAQs About MW4 Kill Block

How many layouts does MW4 Kill Block have?

Activision says Kill Block launched with dozens of slabs and more than 500 possible configurations. Each match combines two End Slabs with one Central Slab.

Can you use custom loadouts in Kill Block Gunfight?

No. Gunfight gives every player the same randomized weapons and equipment, and the loadout changes along with the layout after every two rounds.

Is Kill Block in 6v6 playlists?

Not at launch. Kill Block supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight, and Activision plans 6v6 modes after launch.

Which classic maps appear in Kill Block?

Activision names slabs based on Crash, Storage Town, and Shoot House. Most other slabs are new to MW4.

Final Words

Kill Block rewards a habit many Call of Duty players lose once they know the maps: reading the layout fresh each match. Spawn trap routes and memorized pre-aims lose value when the Central Slab changes every two rounds.

The 10v10 version is the wild card. I'd expect twenty players on a Shoot House-sized footprint to feel closer to a chaos playlist than a tactical one, and that may become its main draw.

Keep an eye on the 6v6 rollout. Once Kill Block joins core 6v6 modes, it stops being a side attraction and starts shaping how people practice.
