How to Unlock MW4 Apex Attachments When They Return

MW4 Apex attachments were a headline Gunsmith feature in the open beta, but they disappeared on launch day. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 pulled them from the live game, and Activision says they'll return soon. If you went looking for one at max weapon level, that's why you came up empty.
This page explains how to unlock Apex attachments once they're back, what they did in the beta, and the Apex attachments list players saw before launch.
MW4 Apex Attachments Summary
MW4 removed Apex attachments at launch. The patch notes say they'll return soon, with no date given.
In the beta, you unlocked a weapon's Apex attachment by fully leveling that weapon.
Apex attachments don't use an attachment slot, so they stack on top of a full build.
They change a weapon's role, adding conversions, alternate fire modes, or built-in equipment.
Beta examples include the M4 Hurricane, ISO Trace, and Rezi 12 Enforcer.
Launchers and the Combat Knife had no Apex attachment.
Keep leveling your favorite guns now, so the Apex reward is ready when the system returns.
Why MW4 Apex Attachments Are Missing at Launch
Apex attachments aren't in the live game right now. The MW4 launch patch notes say Infinity Ward removed them for launch and that they will return soon.
According to the same notes, Infinity Ward put early seasonal Apex attachments into the beta to confirm they were fun and balanced before their real release.
So the beta was a test run. When do they come back? Activision only says soon, and the seasonal label suggests they'll arrive with seasonal content, though Activision hasn't said whether the beta lineup returns unchanged. The launch notes also list Apex attachments among event rewards, without further details.
That matters for any build guide written before October 23. Loadouts that list an Apex attachment, ours included, still work, and you simply run the standard attachments until the Apex comes back.
How to Unlock Apex Attachments

In the beta, you earned Apex attachments by fully leveling a supported weapon. The official MW4 open beta weapons guide lists it as the final reward on each weapon's level track.
Max levels vary by gun. The beta guide puts the M4 at level 68, the Kastov 762 at level 71, and the Signal .50 at level 73. The X-58 Nyx tops out at level 47. Those caps come from the beta and could shift with the Apex system's return. Our MW4 weapons list has every launch gun and its class.
Apex attachments sit outside the normal slots. Activision says they're equipped separately from standard Gunsmith parts and don't take up an attachment slot, so they add to a finished build.
Activision hasn't said how Apex unlocks will interact with weapon prestige. Our weapon prestige explainer covers how resets work today.
The MW4 Apex Attachments List From the Beta
The beta Apex attachments list covered most of the arsenal, and each one changed how its weapon plays. Activision's guide describes them as role changers, with alternate fire modes, integrated equipment, or tactical tools.
Weapon | Apex attachment | What it did in the beta |
|---|---|---|
M4 | M4 Hurricane | Top-loading 5.7x28mm bullpup variant |
ISO Nightshade | ISO Trace | RFID rounds that tag targets and show them on the optic |
Rezi 12 | Rezi 12 Enforcer | Pump-action cycling with explosive slugs |
FiNN LMG | FINN Adverse | Unthrottled fire rate that can overheat |
Patriot XMR | Patriot XMR Volt | Underbarrel launcher with electric darts |
Oris 8.6 | Oris 8.6 Razor | Module with throwable kunai |
Two weapons listed as a pair of options. The Hyeon Burst had a full-auto conversion and a burst-then-auto mode, and the Kastov 762 had a 5.45 conversion plus an RF pulse barrel.
Some guns got nothing. Launchers and the Combat Knife had no Apex support, and the WZ.55 Striga's Apex was marked classified.
What to Do Before Apex Attachments Return
Level your main weapons now. When Apex attachments return, a gun that's already at max level should be ready to equip its Apex right away, assuming Activision keeps the beta rules.
Use the MW4 meta tier list to pick guns worth the investment. Weapons near the top today are the safest bets, since their base builds already hold up.
Gunny, the build recommender in Create a Class, works with whatever attachments you've unlocked. It's a quick way to test a gun before committing to a full level track.
Max-level grinds take hours per weapon. MW4 bot lobbies speed up weapon XP. Call of Duty accounts with leveled guns skip the wait entirely. The best MW4 loadouts still work without Apex parts in the meantime.
FAQs About MW4 Apex Attachments
Final Words
Pulling Apex attachments at launch was the safe call. A system that adds explosive slugs and target-tagging optics to a fresh sandbox can wreck balance before anyone knows the base meta.
The return will probably come in waves. Activision calls the beta set early seasonal attachments, which hints at Apex parts dropping with seasons instead of all at once.
The ISO Trace has the biggest upside. If it returns the way it played in the beta, target tagging on an SMG optic could take over the SMG meta within days.
