MW4 Meta Tier List and the Best Guns at Launch

MW4 Meta Tier List and the Best Guns at Launch

The MW4 meta is already taking form before launch day, since 22 of the 33 launch guns were playable in the August beta. That gives us a decent read on the best MW4 guns for day one, and we built this list from the beta trackers, where at least two of them agree. Expect a few names to move once the launch balance pass goes live.

This MW4 tier list covers multiplayer in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Below, you'll find the S-tier picks, the guns just under them, and what the launch patch notes already changed.

MW 4 Meta Summary

  • S-tier: the M4, ISO Nightshade, Kastov 762, and Oris 8.6 top most of the beta trackers we checked.

  • Best all-rounder: the M4, with forgiving recoil and solid mid-range reach.

  • Best close range: the ISO Nightshade, which took several beta nerfs and still stayed S-tier.

  • No hipfire bloom: hipfire shots go where the gun points, and weapon motion now affects where bullets land.

  • Launch balance pass: SMGs got stronger at close to mid range, and one-shot guns got flinch and damage tuning.

  • 11 launch guns never appeared in the beta and could reshuffle week one.

The S-Tier Guns Leading the MW4 Meta

Four guns sit on top of the MW4 meta after the beta: the M4, ISO Nightshade, Kastov 762, and Oris 8.6. Three of the four trackers we compared put all four guns in their highest tier.

Want the easy pick? Take the M4. Its recoil is forgiving, you get it early, and it holds up well at mid-range. The ISO Nightshade wins close fights with a fast time to kill and handling that stays manageable. One tracker logged several nerfs to it during the beta, plus a small buff on August 31, and it never left S-tier.

The Kastov 762 hits harder per shot than the M4 and reaches further. Slower handling and a harder kick come with it, which suits players who already track well. The Oris 8.6 marksman rifle plays like a fast sniper and asks for the most precision of the four.

Activision's official MW4 multiplayer overview says bloom is gone and hipfire shots travel where the weapon points. The same post says weapon motion now directly affects where bullets go. For every gun and its class, see all MW4 weapons.

I'd grab the X-58 Nyx if the ISO feels too twitchy. Its Apex Attachment, Shroud, turns it into a low-signature stealth build that keeps your firing visibility down. The KG-7 Vulcan's one-shot zones come from beta testing, and the launch patch tuned one-shot guns. Test it in a private match before you trust it.

Keep the Rezi 12 for close objective play, since it falls off across the map. For full class setups, check our best MW4 loadouts.

How the MW4 Meta Could Shift After Launch

The MW4 launch patch notes list a balance pass on all weapons. Activision names two broad changes there: SMGs got stronger at close to mid range, and one-hit-kill weapons got flinch and damage tuning. The notes skip per-gun numbers, and nobody outside the studio knows yet how far the ISO or the Vulcan moved.

Apex Attachments add another layer. Each one is the final reward for maxing out a gun, and it doesn't use an attachment slot. The M4 Hurricane turns the rifle into a high-velocity 5.7x28 SMG setup. The ISO Nightshade Hunter marks enemies and tracks them behind cover, at the cost of velocity and penetration.

Players who want those builds on day one need a fully leveled gun first. Call of Duty Accounts on GameBoost come with progress already in place for testing Apex builds without the grind. We'll update this tier list once the first live patch lands.

FAQs About MW4 Meta

What is the best gun in MW4 right now?

The M4 is the best all-round gun at launch, with forgiving recoil and solid mid-range reach. For close quarters, the ISO Nightshade is the stronger choice.

How many guns are in MW4 at launch?

MW4 launches with 33 weapons: 24 primaries, 8 secondaries, and 1 melee weapon. Only 22 of them were playable in the beta.

Is the MW4 meta the same in Warzone?

Probably not. This ranking uses multiplayer beta data only, and our read is that rifles and marksman guns will rank higher in Warzone's longer fights.

When will the MW4 meta change?

It already started. The launch patch includes a balance pass on all weapons, and the 11 guns missing from the beta add fresh competition in week one.

Final Words

Level the M4 first. It's easy to use, and its Hurricane Apex build gives it a second role at max level.

Eleven guns skipped the beta entirely. One of them could take a top spot by the end of the first week.

Test the SMG change from the launch notes early. If SMGs really did get stronger at close to mid range, the ISO and the X-58 Nyx could push rifles out of small-map lobbies. Will the M4 still rule Shipment-style chaos? Try both SMGs before you spend weapon XP.
