All MW4 Camos and How to Unlock Them

MW4 camos run on one ladder per weapon, and knowing how to unlock MW4 camos in the right order saves you hours, from the first Military camo to the nine MW4 mastery camos. DMZ Early Access opened on October 20 for digital pre-orders and pre-purchases, and Multiplayer, reviewed in our article, followed when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23. Activision has published the launch structure, which means you can plan your MW4 camo challenges from your first match.
Every gun goes through 8 Military camos and 3 Special camos, then Gold, Platinum, and Harmonic Break. Thirty-three Harmonic Break challenges earn Divergence, which opens the Mastery camos. Weapon Prestige adds four Pyroclast camos on a separate path, and two launch camos came from pre-orders and a Black Ops 7 or Warzone challenge.
Below, you'll find each camo type in order, what it asks for, and the order I'd grind them in.
All MW4 Camos Unlocking Summary
Level a gun for its Military camos. Each weapon has 8, and the HAN 86 earns them between Weapon Level 10 and 65.
Clear its 3 Special camo challenges. Finish one in any mode, and it's available in every mode.
Win one big match for Gold. You need 15 eliminations in a single Multiplayer match or 100 in a single DMZ match.
Work through whole classes. Platinum opens after every Gold in a class, and Harmonic Break follows Platinum.
Reach 33 Harmonic Break challenges. That earns Divergence and opens Mastery 1 in Multiplayer and DMZ.
Pick a Mastery track. There are 9 MW4 mastery camos, three per mode, and Warzone's challenges stay classified until Season 1.
Prestige for Pyroclast. Four Pyroclast camos run up to Weapon Prestige Master level 250.
Redeem the pre-order pack. Moonlit Pearl and Gilded Ruin sit in a pack you have to redeem by October 23, 2027.
How to Unlock MW4 Camos in Every Mode

Camo progress is one shared grind across modes, according to Activision's MW4 progression and prestige guide. Weapon Levels and Special challenges count in Multiplayer and DMZ, and a Special camo you finish in one mode shows up in the other.
Warzone joins later. The MW4 launch patch notes tie Warzone camo progress to Season 1 and the new version of Warzone. Legacy weapon camos from older games won't be available in Warzone either, per Activision's Warzone Season 1 post.
DMZ challenges ask for bigger numbers. Activision explains the higher Special camo counts by noting that non-player targets count in DMZ. Mastery breaks from the shared track: each mode has three Mastery camos with their own requirements.

Military and Special Camos
Military camos come from leveling. Each weapon has eight named Military Camo 1 through 8, and you earn each one at a set Weapon Level. On the HAN 86, they arrive at levels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57, and 65. Activision says other weapons use different levels and hasn't listed them.
Special camos are the first real MW4 camo challenges. Every gun has three, and each opens at a Weapon Level with its own task. Activision shared two full examples:
Weapon | Special camo | Opens at | Multiplayer | DMZ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
HAN 86 | Smoke | Level 25 | 20 mounted player kills | 75 mounted kills |
HAN 86 | Stormwave | Level 46 | 50 kills with a silencer | 125 enemy kills with a silencer |
HAN 86 | Red | Level 72 | 3 player kills without dying | 3 enemy kills without taking damage, 50 times |
Sang 9mm | Autumn | Level 13 | 25 ADS kills | 75 ADS enemy kills |
Sang 9mm | Snakeskin | Level 25 | 3 kills without dying, 5 times | 3 enemy kills without taking damage, 15 times |
Sang 9mm | Space Time | Level 38 | 50 Akimbo player kills | 125 Akimbo enemy kills |
DMZ sometimes changes the condition on top of the count. Red and Snakeskin ask you not to die in Multiplayer and not to take damage in DMZ, with far more repetitions. Activision's HAN 86 image captions also show other Special camo names. Check the in-game list for your gun before you plan around one.
Gold, Platinum and Harmonic Break
Gold is the first Completionist camo. Finish all Military and Special camos on a weapon, then get 15 eliminations in a single Multiplayer match or 100 in a single DMZ match. Mode and map choice decide most Gold attempts, and our MW4 Gold camo guide covers both.
Platinum works by weapon class. The challenge opens after you complete every Gold challenge in that class, which means 8 Golds for Assault Rifles. Harmonic Break follows Platinum, and both use one challenge type per class:
Weapon class | Platinum challenge | Harmonic Break challenge |
|---|---|---|
Assault Rifles | Headshots | Double kills |
SMGs | Kills from behind | Hipfire kills |
Shotguns | Hipfire kills | Player kills without reloading |
LMGs | Kills without dying | Player kills without releasing the trigger |
Marksman and Sniper Rifles | Prone player kills | One-shot kills |
Pistols | Player kills from behind | Hipfire kills |
Launchers | Player kills without taking damage | Player kills |
Melee | Kills without dying | Player kills from behind |
On the HAN 86, Platinum asks for 50 headshots against players in Multiplayer or 100 against enemies in DMZ. Harmonic Break asks for 25 double kills or 50 against enemies, and Activision says progress can come wholly or partly from either mode. The Harmonic Break gate is less clear, since the general rule says all Platinum challenges first, and the HAN 86 example spells that out as Platinum on 33 weapons. Our MW4 Platinum camo guide goes class by class.
Divergence and the MW4 Mastery Camos
Divergence is the bridge to Mastery. You earn it by completing 33 Harmonic Break challenges, and it opens Mastery 1 in Multiplayer and DMZ. From there, each mode runs its own track, and every Mastery camo requires the one before it:
Mode | Mastery 1 | Mastery 2 | Mastery 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
Multiplayer | Mercurial Drift: 10 kills in a match, 250 times | Polyatomic Reforged: 3 kills without taking damage, 300 times | Orion Reforged: 5 kills without dying, 500 times |
DMZ | Chiral: 2,500 Tier 3+ enemy kills | Ripple Tide: exfil 2 LT dog tags in one deployment, 50 times | Helio: 25,000 kills with Legendary Weapons on a Max Level Operator |
Warzone |
Orion Reforged and Helio end the two longest tracks. Counting one streak per run, Orion Reforged alone means at least 2,500 kills, and Helio sets its count at 25,000. Our Orion Reforged guide splits that Multiplayer grind into steps.
Warzone's three Mastery camos have names and no published challenges yet. Activision marks them as classified until Season 1. Which track will you pick first, Multiplayer or DMZ?
Pyroclast Camos From Weapon Prestige
Pyroclast is a separate set tied to Weapon Prestige. Once a gun reaches max level, you can choose to enter Weapon Prestige, and four Pyroclast facets follow:
Pyroclast: Weapon Prestige 1, level 1
Pyroclast Terminus: Weapon Prestige 1, max level
Pyroclast Scatter: Weapon Prestige Master level 150
Pyroclast Cascade: Weapon Prestige Master level 250
Prestiging sends the weapon back to level 1 and relocks its attachments, apart from Apex Attachments and Weapon Blueprint attachments. You keep Blueprints, camos, reticles, accessories, decals, and stickers, and shared attachments stay open on your other guns.
Weapon Prestige Master behaves differently. Its level doesn't reset, and you keep your attachments, which turns the climb from 150 to 250 into pure playtime. I'd prestige the guns you already main, since a gun you enjoy is the one you'll stick with for 250 levels.
Pre-Order and Serialized MW4 Camos

Two launch camos sit outside the weapon ladder. Both come in the Gilded Pearl Weapon Camo Pack, a digital pre-order and pre-purchase bonus listed on Activision Support.
Moonlit Pearl arrived instantly for digital pre-orders and pre-purchases, in Black Ops 7 right away and in MW4 at launch, per Activision's editions and pre-order post. Gilded Ruin took real work: a challenge in Black Ops 7 or Warzone to earn 5,000 Skulls, starting July 23 with Black Ops 7 Season 05.
The first 100,000 players to finish got a serialized Gilded Ruin numbered by completion order, as Activision's July camo post explains. Later finishers still get the standard version. The pack has to be redeemed by October 23, 2027, and our rarest MW4 camos ranking shows how Gilded Ruin compares with the hardest grinds.
Best Order to Grind MW4 Camos
Start with a full weapon class. Platinum opens only after every Gold in that class, so leveling all your Assault Rifles side by side gets you to a real reward sooner than maxing one favorite.
Clear Special challenges during normal matches, since each one counts in every mode. Save focused sessions for Gold, where a fast Multiplayer mode or a busy DMZ deployment carries most of the load. Your class matters too, and our best MW4 loadout guide has setups for each playstyle.
Weapon XP feeds Military camos and Weapon Prestige together, so any plan to level up fast in MW4 speeds up both. The campaign hands out two Double Weapon XP tokens that work in Multiplayer and DMZ from launch. Short on time for a full class grind? Call of Duty Accounts on GameBoost can come with progress in place.
FAQs About MW4 Camos
Final Words
Multiplayer and DMZ feed one camo grind, and that changes how you should plan your week. A DMZ regular can push a gun through Military, Special, and Completionist camos without touching a Multiplayer lobby, then pick the DMZ Mastery track at the end.
Special camos pull more weight than they look. Once you finish one, it joins a universal pool you can equip on every other weapon, so a single Stormwave run dresses up your whole armory.
Requirements can also move in patches. I’d check the in-game challenge text now that the game is live, especially the Harmonic Break gate, before committing a week to one weapon class. If the gate turns out to be class-based, a single focused class could reach Harmonic Break far sooner than this launch reading suggests.
