Genshin Impact Visions: What They Are & How to Get One

Visions are glowing gems that let characters in Genshin Impact control one of the game's seven elements. Gods grant a Vision to people with strong ambition or passion, and its holder can then use Anemo, Geo, Electro, Dendro, Hydro, Pyro or Cryo powers in battle.
Because a Vision answers a person's ambition instead of a task they complete, there is no set way to get one, even inside the story. Players can't earn one either, since the Traveler fights without a Vision and switches elements another way.
Genshin Impact Visions Summary
Visions are gifts from the gods that let a person control one element in Genshin Impact.
Seven Vision types exist, one for each element: Anemo, Geo, Electro, Dendro, Hydro, Pyro and Cryo.
Ambition matters most, since Visions go to people with great ambition or passion, with no fixed way to earn one.
Every nation has its own Vision design, and Fontaine even uses two of them.
Losing a Vision is possible, and a dead holder's Vision turns into an empty Masterless Vision.
Archons use Gnoses instead of Visions, and Fatui agents use Delusions that come at a personal cost.
What Are Visions in Genshin Impact
In Genshin Impact's lore, a Vision is a gift from the gods to someone in Teyvat who has caught their attention. People who hold one are known as allogenes, though that term mostly comes from the gods, and ordinary people in Teyvat just call them Vision holders.
Allogenes are believed to have a chance of ascending to Celestia and becoming gods themselves, so receiving one is treated as a sign that the gods are watching. Visions are remarkably tough too, and nothing in the story has managed to break one.
In combat, each Vision grants two to four elemental abilities, usually an Elemental Skill and an Elemental Burst, and some characters can even take the form of their element when they sprint. Bow users get one more perk, since their fully charged aimed shots carry their Vision's element instead of firing a plain arrow.
Types of Visions and Their Meanings

Seven types of Visions exist, one for each element: Anemo, Geo, Electro, Dendro, Hydro, Pyro and Cryo. Each element belongs to a nation ruled by an Archon with its own ideal:
Vision element | Nation | Archon and ideal | Example Vision holders |
|---|---|---|---|
Anemo | Mondstadt | Barbatos (Venti), freedom | Jean, Sucrose, Kaedehara Kazuha |
Geo | Liyue | Morax (Zhongli), contracts | Ningguang, Noelle, Albedo |
Electro | Inazuma | Beelzebul (Raiden Shogun), eternity | Fischl, Keqing, Beidou |
Dendro | Sumeru | Buer (Nahida), wisdom | Tighnari, Collei, Alhaitham |
Hydro | Fontaine | Focalors (Furina), justice | Mona, Xingqiu, Sangonomiya Kokomi |
Pyro | Natlan | Mavuika, war | Diluc, Bennett, Hu Tao |
Cryo | Snezhnaya | Tsaritsa, ideal not revealed | Kaeya, Ganyu, Qiqi |
Elements don't have to match a holder's home nation, though. Mondstadt has Pyro and Cryo users, Liyue has Hydro users and every nation mixes elements the same way, because the Archons don't directly decide who receives a Vision, and a person's own desire plays a key role instead.
Many players link each element to a personality type, but these Genshin vision meanings are fan interpretations, not official lore. Lists that tie Hydro to responsibility or Electro to ambition come from players comparing characters, and no official rule ties a specific personality to a specific element. What the game does confirm is the ideal of each nation's Archon, from Mondstadt's freedom to Fontaine's justice.
How Visions Are Granted and How to Get One
Visions come from Celestia as a form of acknowledgement, but the game has never fully explained how they are created or handed out. Nearly every holder in the stories carries an intense desire or goal, which is why ambition is seen as the key to receiving one.
Archons can still shape the process in their own nations. When the Raiden Shogun enforced the Vision Hunt Decree, the Electro Archon stopped giving out new Electro Visions, and Electro became the rarest Vision type for as long as the Decree lasted.
Outside of cases like that, there is no set requirement or ritual for getting a Vision, since ambition can't be measured. One either appears in front of a person in an instant, or an old Masterless Vision nearby comes back to life for them, and some people never receive one even when fighting for their lives.
Character stories show how different those moments can be:
Bennett received his Pyro Vision after a brush with death on one of his adventures.
Qiqi got her Cryo Vision as a child, when she wished to stop time and avoid death.
Kaeya's Cryo Vision appeared on the night Diluc's father Crepus died, in the middle of a confrontation with Diluc.
Ningguang planned to sell an empty Masterless Vision, and it awakened for her instead.
Mona also reawakened a Masterless Vision that had lost its owner, instead of receiving a new one.
Players can't get a Vision for their own character, because the Traveler fights without one and changes elements by resonating with the Statues of The Seven. Characters who do carry Visions are added to an account through Wishes and story quests, and Vision quizzes found online are fan-made personality tests.
Wearing Visions and Their Designs
Vision shapes depend on the nation that granted them, not the element, so holders from the same nation wear a similar design. Size also varies from one holder to another, so some characters carry noticeably smaller Visions than others. Basic designs for each nation look like this:
Mondstadt: a round gem set inside a pair of wings.
Liyue: a diamond-shaped gem inside an octagonal border.
Inazuma: a round gem inside a thin ring decorated with small circles.
Fontaine: two different designs, one for Ousia and one for Pneuma, the two opposing energies of Fontaine's Arkhe system. Lynette carries the Ousia design, and Lyney carries the Pneuma one.
Losing a Vision and the Vision Hunt Decree
Visions aren't permanent, and losing one is described as losing one's ambition along with it. Former holders can sink into depression, change personality or even lose important memories, because a Vision is tied so closely to what drives a person.
Inazuma's story shows what happens when Visions are taken on a large scale. Under the Vision Hunt Decree, the Raiden Shogun ordered Visions confiscated across Inazuma, and the Tenryou Commission carried out the order. Confiscated Visions were placed into the Statue of the Omnipresent God.
Kurosawa Kyounosuke, Tejima and Domon all forgot old habits, struggled to remember why they fought or seemed like different people after losing theirs. Arataki Itto also lost his Vision to Kujou Sara, but he later got it back.
Not everyone accepted the Decree. Watatsumi Island, led by the Sangonomiya Clan, formed an armed resistance against it. Mysterious backers handed some of its soldiers Delusions, which gave them power but drained their life force.
Kazuha's past is tied to the Decree as well. His close friend challenged the Raiden Shogun to a duel and lost, and Kazuha took his friend's Electro Vision from the battlefield. In the end, the Raiden Shogun abolished the Decree after the Traveler confronted her.
Masterless and Counterfeit Visions
When a holder dies, their Vision loses its color and becomes a Masterless Vision, an empty shell with no elemental power. These shells are treated as valuable items, and some are sold for large sums of Mora.
Bringing one back is possible but rare, since a Masterless Vision has only a low chance of resonating with a new person. Mona and Ningguang both reawakened one this way, and Kazuha briefly revived his late friend's Electro Vision during the Inazuma story.
Not every Vision is real, and counterfeits come in two forms:
Fake Visions look exactly like the real thing but can't control any element. Venti wears a plain glass orb as a fake to hide that he is an Archon.
Delusions are Vision-like devices that the Fatui receive from the Tsaritsa. They grant elemental power without a Vision, at a heavy cost to the user's body and life, and one backfiring Delusion led to the death of Diluc and Kaeya's father.
Gnoses and Characters Without Visions
Some characters use elements without any Vision at all:
Archons use Gnoses, items that connect them directly with Celestia, so they don't need Visions.
Traveler has no Vision and draws on elements through the Statues of The Seven.
Hilichurls, especially Samachurls, can use elements without Visions, and the game hasn't explained how yet.
Visions, Gnoses and Delusions all give elemental power, but they work very differently:
Power source | Who uses it | Where it comes from | Cost to the user |
|---|---|---|---|
Vision | People recognized by the gods (allogenes) | Granted by Celestia | No known cost |
Gnosis | The Seven Archons | Tied directly to Celestia | No known cost |
Delusion | Fatui agents and people they supply | Made by the Fatui | Drains the user's life force |
Newer regions add their own systems on top of Visions. Natlan characters use Nightsoul, a separate combat and exploration mechanic, and Nod-Krai introduced kuuvahki, a moon-related energy that some characters channel through devices called Moon Wheels.

Final Words
Visions sit at the heart of Genshin Impact's story, since nearly every playable character owes their powers to one. Ambition earns a Vision, its design shows which nation granted it, and losing it can change a person completely. Each playable character's story profile describes how they received theirs.
