All 7 Genshin Impact Archons: Names, Ideals & Stories

Archons in Genshin Impact are the seven gods who rule Teyvat's seven nations, and each one stands for a single element and an ideal. All seven Archons are Venti (Anemo), Zhongli (Geo), Raiden Ei (Electro), Nahida (Dendro), Focalors (Hydro), Mavuika (Pyro) and the Tsaritsa (Cryo), and players know most of them by their human names.

Together they are called The Seven, a group that formed after the Archon War ended about 2,000 years ago. Six of the Archons are already playable 5-star characters, and HoYoverse revealed the Tsaritsa of Snezhnaya as a playable 5-star Cryo character joining in Version 7.3.

  • All seven Archons in Genshin Impact rule Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, Sumeru, Fontaine, Natlan and Snezhnaya, one nation each.

Coming in Version 7.3

Archon names are the divine names these gods carry in Teyvat's history, and human names are the ones they use when walking among people. Most characters in the game call the Archons by their human names, which is why players often meet Venti or Zhongli long before learning who they really are.

Each ideal shapes how the Archon rules. Mondstadt values freedom, Liyue runs on contracts, Inazuma chased eternity, and Fontaine built its whole society around justice. Players meet each Archon through the Archon Quests, Genshin Impact's main story chapters, as the Traveler moves from nation to nation.

Six of the seven Archons are playable 5-star characters, and they only come from limited event banners. Their banners return as reruns from time to time, which is the main way to get characters in Genshin Impact after a first banner ends.

Anemo Archon: Venti (Barbatos)

Venti genshin impact

Venti is a wine-loving bard who wanders the streets of Mondstadt, and his true identity is Barbatos, the Anemo Archon and God of Freedom. Players meet him early in the Prologue, long before he admits who he is, which makes him the first Archon most players ever see.

Barbatos started out as a small wind spirit, not a god. When the people of Mondstadt rose up against Decarabian, the tyrant god who ruled the city, they killed him and ended his reign. Barbatos took the place of the fallen god, and he chose the human form of a late friend who died in that rebellion, which is the face players know as Venti.

Venti also protected Mondstadt long after he became its Archon. About 500 years ago, he woke the dragon Dvalin to defend Mondstadt from Durin, a dark dragon that attacked the city, and Dvalin later became one of Mondstadt's Four Winds.

His ideal of freedom shapes Mondstadt to this day. Venti wants the people of Mondstadt to be ruled by no one, including himself, so he rarely steps in and spends most of his time singing in taverns. In battle, Venti is a 5-star Anemo bow user and one of the earliest Archons added to the game.

Geo Archon: Zhongli (Morax)

zhongli genshin impact

Zhongli works as a consultant at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor in Liyue Harbor, and he is secretly Morax, also called Rex Lapis, the Geo Archon and God of Contracts. Morax is the oldest of The Seven, and his rule shaped Liyue for thousands of years. Even Mora, the main currency in Genshin Impact, was created by Morax.

Before Liyue Harbor existed, Morax ruled the Guili Plains together with Guizhong, the God of Dust. Guizhong was killed during the Archon War, and Morax then led their people south to build Liyue Harbor, where he ruled for thousands of years.

Liyue's Archon Quest centers on his retirement. Morax faked his own death to step down and hand Liyue over to its people, and he now lives as a mortal who wants to see the world from their point of view. As a playable 5-star Geo polearm user, he is best known for his strong shields, and players often build Zhongli as a shield support for almost any team.

Electro Archon: Raiden Ei (Beelzebul)

Raiden Ei genshin impact

Raiden Ei is Beelzebul, the Electro Archon of Inazuma and the god of eternity. Her twin sister Makoto, also called Baal, ruled Inazuma before her. Makoto died about 500 years ago, and Ei took over as the Electro Archon after losing her sister.

Grief over that loss shaped Ei's idea of eternity. She created the Shogun, a puppet that governs Inazuma in her place, and she stays in the Plane of Euthymia, a separate realm, so the Shogun handles daily rule. Under the Shogun, Inazuma closed its borders to the outside world and enforced the Vision Hunt Decree, which took Visions away from people across the nation.

Inazuma's Archon Quest follows the Traveler's fight against those policies, and Ei eventually rethinks her version of eternity. Players can pull the Raiden Shogun, a 5-star Electro polearm user, who is Ei and the Shogun sharing one body.

Dendro Archon: Nahida (Buer)

Nahida genshin impact

Nahida is Buer, also called Lesser Lord Kusanali, the Dendro Archon of Sumeru and the God of Wisdom. She rules the nation of scholars, home to the Akademiya, and she oversees the Irminsul, a giant tree whose roots hold knowledge from across Teyvat.

Nahida is one of the younger members of The Seven. Her predecessor, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, took a branch from the Irminsul to be reborn, and Nahida came from that branch about 500 years ago. For most of those years, she was kept locked away in the Sanctuary of Surasthana, far from the people she rules.

Sumeru's Archon Quest also gives one of the clearest hints about what Gnoses really are, since Nahida describes them as a means to awaken the Heavenly Principles. As a playable character, Nahida is a 5-star Dendro catalyst user.

Hydro Archon: Focalors and Furina

Hydro Archon genshin

Fontaine's Archon story has two very different faces. Focalors, also called the Regina of All Waters, Kindreds, Peoples and Laws, was the Hydro Archon and God of Justice, and Furina is the human half she left behind. For 500 years, most of Fontaine believed Furina was their god.

Focalors began as one of the Oceanids that the previous Hydro Archon, Egeria, turned into humans. After Egeria died, Focalors became the new Hydro Archon and faced a prophecy that Fontaine would be destroyed. To fight that prophecy, she separated her divinity from her humanity, which created Furina as a separate person.

Furina played the role of a flamboyant Hydro Archon in public, and she became famous as the star of Fontaine's court trials. Behind the scenes, Focalors worked to free Fontaine and its people from their prophesied doom, and she gave her life to do it at the end of Fontaine's Archon Quest. Her sacrifice also destroyed the Hydro Archon's throne and returned its power to Neuvillette, the Hydro Dragon Sovereign. Furina's double life is why many players call her the fake Archon.

Furina later left the act behind and now lives a humbler life. She is a playable 5-star Hydro sword user, and most teams build Furina as an off-field support.

Pyro Archon: Mavuika (Haborym)

Pyro Archon

Mavuika is Haborym, the Pyro Archon of Natlan and the God of War. She is the leader of Natlan and its strongest warrior, and Natlan's people look to her in their long fight against the Abyss, a dark force that keeps attacking the nation.

Mavuika stands out from every other Archon in one big way. She was originally human and held her own Pyro Vision before she became the Pyro Archon, since Natlan's Pyro Archons start out as mortals instead of gods.

Natlan's Archon Quest shows how far Mavuika will go to end the Abyss threat for good. She joined the roster as a playable 5-star Pyro claymore user during Natlan's story, which makes her one of the newest Archons in the game.

Cryo Archon: Tsaritsa (Anastasya)

Tsaritsa genshin impact

Tsaritsa, whose full human name is Anastasya, is the Cryo Archon of Snezhnaya and the god of love. She isn't the original Cryo Archon, and she rules Snezhnaya as a cold but caring figure who keeps her plans hidden from most of Teyvat.

Tsaritsa commands the Fatui and the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, Snezhnaya's diplomats and agents who appear in almost every nation's story. Her goal is to challenge Celestia, and she has declared war on the Heavenly Principles for what they did to the people of Teyvat.

HoYoverse revealed Tsaritsa as a playable 5-star Cryo character on November 6, 2026, and she joins the game in Version 7.3. She isn't playable yet, and her weapon and full kit haven't been shown, but she will become the seventh playable Archon once Version 7.3 arrives.

Archon Quests for Each Archon

Archon Quests are Genshin Impact's main story chapters, and each nation's chapter is where players meet its Archon. Players meet the Archons in this order as the story moves from nation to nation:

Nation

Archon

Archon Quest

Mondstadt

Venti

Prologue: The Outlander Who Caught the Wind

Liyue

Zhongli

Chapter I: Farewell, Archaic Lord

Inazuma

Raiden Ei

Chapter II: Omnipresence Over Mortals

Sumeru

Chapter III: Truth Amongst the Pages of Purana

Fontaine

Focalors and Furina

Chapter IV: Masquerade of the Guilty

Natlan

Mavuika

Chapter V: Incandescent Ode of Resurrection

Snezhnaya

Tsaritsa

Everwinter Without Mercy

Nod-Krai, a region in the far south of Snezhnaya, has its own story arc called Song of the Welkin Moon before the main Snezhnaya chapter. Players need to finish each nation's Archon Quest to see the full story of its Archon, since most of the lore in this article comes straight from those chapters.

Archon War and the Original Archons

Teyvat's Archon War ended about 2,000 years ago, after a long age in which many gods fought each other for land and power across Teyvat. Seven winners claimed seats in Celestia and became The Seven, and many of the gods who lost were killed. Liyue still remembers Guizhong, the God of Dust, who fell during that war.

Only Venti and Zhongli remain from that original lineup. Andrius, a wolf god of the north, let Barbatos take over Mondstadt and became one of Mondstadt's Four Winds. Over time, the Electro, Dendro and Hydro seats also passed to new Archons, and these predecessors come up often in the story:

  • Makoto, also called Baal, was the first Electro Archon and Raiden Ei's twin sister.

  • Greater Lord Rukkhadevata was the Dendro Archon before Nahida.

  • Egeria ruled as the Hydro Archon before Focalors.

Only six Archon thrones remain today, since Focalors' sacrifice destroyed the Hydro Archon's throne. Fontaine still has Furina and Neuvillette, but The Seven no longer has a Hydro Archon of its own.

Gnoses and Celestia

Celestia genshin

Every Archon carries a Gnosis, a divine item that lets them connect directly with Celestia, the island floating above Teyvat. All seven Gnoses were made from the remains of the Third Descender, a figure from Teyvat's distant past, and they set Archons apart from people who use regular Genshin Impact Visions.

Tsaritsa's long-term plan revolves around these divine items, and her Fatui agents have already taken several of them during the Archon Quests:

  • La Signora took the Anemo Gnosis from Venti in Mondstadt.

  • Zhongli handed the Geo Gnosis to La Signora as part of a deal with the Tsaritsa.

  • Scaramouche captured the Electro Gnosis in Inazuma.

  • Nahida traded the Dendro Gnosis to Dottore in exchange for knowledge about Teyvat's false sky.
