In Genshin Impact, Penumbral Escape starts when the Strange Crystal Core pulls you into the Shadow Realm beneath Novokitezhgrad. The way out runs through two minecart rides, a shielded knight, and a black crystal suspended above the mine.
If you’re stuck on the knight, look away from the boss when it stops taking damage. The next target is on an upper platform. Clear it, finish the fight, then use the grapple points to reach the core. If you’re saving for a banner, the quest’s 30 Primogems count toward your next Wish before you decide whether to buy Genesis Crystals.

How to Start Penumbral Escape
Penumbral Escape follows Awake and Sing, Ye Sleepers in the Dust, the World Quest that sends you to rescue miners in the Kresnik Kristall Mines. Finish the rescue objectives and follow the quest deeper into the mine to investigate the Strange Crystal Core. Interacting with it starts Penumbral Escape; there’s no separate quest giver to visit.
If your log is still on the earlier Novokitezhgrad quests, finish Citadel of the Ancient Fae and follow the miner rescue branch. Let Not All Rivers Run Dry covers the other branch, where Glinin and Thrud investigate the river beneath Teplo Oasis. The core that starts Penumbral Escape is at the end of the mine route.
Penumbral Escape Walkthrough
Shoot the Blightkristall Fissures
Open the nearby ammo box and equip your shotgun. Look for the glowing crack in the first black crystal blocking the tunnel. Aim at the crack until the obstruction breaks, then move past the waypoint and repeat at the next crystal.
If the crystal stays intact, close the distance and line up the shot on the fissure. Once the tunnel is open, follow the tracks to the minecart.
Ride the Minecart and Defeat the Corrupted Hunter
Board the cart and watch both sides of the tracks. Enemies appear along the railway, and the first ride ends near a collapsed stretch of track. Deal with the Corrupted Hunter there before moving on.
Use your firearms against the Corrupted Hunter. Restock at the supply boxes later in the route before you take on the knight.
Take the next cart after the hunter falls. Shoot enemies as they come into range; explosive barrels can help when a group appears close together. The cart eventually crashes near the next part of the route.
Open the Luxurious Chest and Pick Up the Blueprint
After the crash, stop for the Luxurious Chest before heading deeper into the mine. Use the Eye of Graeae to place a Zipline Link Mechanism, then ride the zipline across the gap. On the higher platform, restock at the supply boxes and pick up the firearm blueprint.
The blueprint and chest are separate from the quest completion payout. Pick them up now so you can go straight to the knight with a full supply of ammunition.
Defeat the Shadow-Tarnished Glacial Knight
The knight near the core opens with an ice shield. Use Pyro attacks to break it, then watch for the change in objectives when it stops moving.

If your shots aren’t progressing the fight after the shield breaks, look for the Blightkristall at the side of the arena. Shoot its fissure, go through the opening, then turn right and break the second crystal. Follow the path up to the soldier. Once it’s down, return to the knight and finish the fight.
Destroy the Black Crystal Core
Use the Freeze Mark Sigils that appear after the knight falls to grapple upward. Once you have a shot at the Black Crystal Core, fire at it. Breaking the core sends you back to the normal map.
Speak to Koshkin in Novokitezhgrad to close the quest. If you’re back in the city but the objective is still active, that conversation is the remaining step.
