All Witcher Games in Order, by Release and Timeline

All Witcher Games in Order, by Release and Timeline

Putting the Witcher games in order looks simple with three numbered RPGs on the shelf. Then you count a digital board game, a free card game, a 30-hour campaign about a warrior queen, and a phone game that sent you hunting monsters around your own neighborhood. The Witcher series has followed Geralt of Rivia since 2007, and the Witcher timeline runs from an age well before his time to his retirement in Toussaint.

Nineteen years after the original, the series counts seven released games: three mainline RPGs and four spin-offs. Release order and story order match for the trilogy, so that part is painless. The spin-offs scramble things: Thronebreaker and Monster Slayer both take place before the first game, and two of the seven have no story to place at all. The trilogy is also far from finished business, with The Witcher 3 Remastered out since September 29, 2026, a new expansion due in 2027, and The Witcher 4 targeting 2028.

This guide lists every main game and every bigger spin-off by release date, followed by the Witcher games in chronological order. Each entry gets the key details, a look at the story and the gameplay, and my verdict. If you want to start tonight, the Witcher games collection on GameBoost has keys for the trilogy, the Adventure Game, Thronebreaker, and both Witcher 3 expansions.

For story order, the two prequels move to the front. Monster Slayer comes first, set in an earlier era well before Geralt's time, and Thronebreaker follows with Queen Meve at the start of Nilfgaard's invasion, during the events of the books. The trilogy then runs in sequence: The Witcher picks up after the books with an amnesiac Geralt, The Witcher 2 lands about half a year later, and The Witcher 3 closes his main saga. Hearts of Stone fits into the main story of The Witcher 3, and Blood and Wine comes after it. The Adventure Game and Gwent sit outside the canon, so you can play them at any point.

Protagonist

Geralt of Rivia

The first game opens with Geralt waking up at Kaer Morhen with no memory of who he is. A group called Salamandra raids the witcher keep and steals the mutagens and formulas that make new witchers, and the chase leads to the city of Vizima. From there it turns into a murky story about a racist knightly order, elven rebels and a criminal gang, with choices that rarely have a clean right answer. Amnesia is a handy trick here, since newcomers learn the world at the same pace as Geralt.

CD PROJEKT RED built the game on a modified version of BioWare's Aurora Engine, and the combat shows its age. You click in rhythm to chain attacks and switch between strong, fast, and group styles, with a steel sword for people and a silver one for monsters. Alchemy carries a lot of weight, and you brew potions from herbs and monster parts during meditation. The version to buy is The Witcher: Enhanced Edition from 2008, which slashed loading times, re-recorded over 5,000 English dialogue lines, and added two new adventures. Console ports announced in 2008 got canceled a year later, so it stays a PC and Mac game.

My Verdict: The roughest Witcher to replay today, mostly for the clunky combat. Push past the first chapter and the writing and the Vizima atmosphere pay off, especially if you want the full Geralt arc.

Protagonist

Geralt of Rivia

The Witcher 2 starts with Geralt in a cell, accused of murdering King Foltest of Temeria. Vernon Roche, commander of the Temerian special forces, frees him, and Geralt sets out to find the real kingslayer with Roche and Triss Merigold. At the end of the first chapter, you side with Roche or with the elven rebel Iorveth, and that one choice swaps out the whole second chapter. You play a different region, different quests and a different view of the same war, which makes this the most replayable game in the series.

This was the debut of CD PROJEKT RED's own REDengine, and the jump from the first game is huge. Combat moved to action controls with dodges, parries, signs and traps, and the opening hours are famously punishing until your skill tree fills out. The world is a set of large hubs instead of an open map, which keeps the political story tight. The Enhanced Edition from April 2012 added about four hours of content and a new intro, and existing owners got it free.

My Verdict: The best story structure in the series, thanks to that branching second chapter. Play it at least twice, once on each side, and you'll have a much richer read on the politics The Witcher 3 builds on.

Geralt, Triss Merigold, Dandelion, Yarpen Zigrin

The Witcher Adventure Game is a digital version of a board game designed by Ignacy Trzewiczek, with the physical edition published by CD PROJEKT RED and Fantasy Flight Games. It tells no canon story. You pick one of four heroes and race across the board to finish quests, earning victory points along the way. Each hero scores in a different way, so Dandelion plays nothing like Geralt.

Every turn you take two actions, such as traveling, investigating, resting, or developing your character. Fatigue and wounds limit what you can do, monster fights resolve with dice and cards, and random event cards keep each run unpredictable. A match ends once one player completes a third main quest, and the digital version lets you set anywhere from one to five main quests to control the length. It works best as a couch game with friends, though the AI is fine for a solo evening.

My Verdict: A cozy side dish for fans who already know the characters. It adds nothing to the lore, but a hot seat match with friends is a cheap and fun way to spend a Witcher night.

Protagonist

Geralt of Rivia

The Witcher 3 sends Geralt after his adopted daughter Ciri, who is on the run from the Wild Hunt, a host of spectral riders led by the elf Eredin. The search crosses war-torn Velen, the free city of Novigrad, and the Skellige Isles, and many side quests hit as hard as the main story. The first expansion, Hearts of Stone (October 13, 2015), is a tight tale about a deal with the sinister Gaunter O'Dimm. Blood and Wine (May 31, 2016) adds the sunlit region of Toussaint and wraps up Geralt's story with a well-earned retirement.

CD PROJEKT RED says the game has sold over 65 million copies, and it keeps getting new life. A free next-gen update hit PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on December 14, 2022, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered arrived on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 on September 29, 2026. It's a free upgrade for owners on qualifying platforms and brings reworked combat and traversal, revamped horse handling, a skill tree overhaul, transmogrification, and new finishers. From August 25, 2026, all current owners also get both expansions at no extra cost. On Switch 2, Remastered is a separate eShop product, which owners of the original Switch version can claim for free.

My Verdict: The best Witcher game and one of the best RPGs ever made. Start here if you're new, and don't skip Hearts of Stone or Blood and Wine. Both rank with the finest expansions in the genre.

1v1 online

Platforms

PC, iOS, Android, Mac (PS4 and Xbox One support ended in 2020)

Protagonist

None; you build decks from five factions plus Syndicate

Gwent began as a card minigame inside The Witcher 3, where Geralt could challenge innkeepers and nobles across the Continent. The standalone version turned it into a free-to-play online card game with its own rules and ranked ladder. Matches run best of three rounds, and the trick is knowing when to pass and save cards for the next round. The core game has no story campaign, so it sits outside the Witcher timeline.

Gwent reached PS4 and Xbox One in December 2018, and CD PROJEKT RED stopped supporting those versions in 2020 to focus on PC and mobile. A single-player roguelike expansion, Gwent: Rogue Mage, followed on July 7, 2022. It stars the mage Alzur in his attempt to create the first Witcher, and its game director said it doesn't count as official Witcher lore. The last content patch from the Gwent team landed in October 2023. Since then, eligible ranked players vote in the Balance Council to change card power and provision values, with one voting cycle planned per month. You can still play it for free on PC, iOS, and Android through the official GWENT site.

My Verdict: A sharp card game for competitive players, with no story stakes at all. Skip it if you only care about Geralt, and play Thronebreaker for the single-player Gwent experience.

PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch (2020), iOS (2020), Android (2021)

Protagonist

Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia

Thronebreaker follows Queen Meve, ruler of Lyria and Rivia, as Nilfgaard's armies pour into the North at the start of the war. Betrayed by her own nobles and forced out of her kingdom, she gathers a ragtag army and fights to win her throne back. The story takes place during the events of the books, well before The Witcher, and Geralt only makes a brief cameo. It started life as a single-player campaign for Gwent before CD PROJEKT RED turned it into a full standalone game in 2018.

You roam painted isometric maps, gather resources and manage your army, then settle every fight with Gwent-style card battles. Plenty of battles come with special rules, and some are pure puzzles, which keeps the 30-hour campaign fresh. Your companions join as hero cards and leave your deck if they leave your party, so the hard choices hurt in both the story and the gameplay. The writing is as morally gray as the main trilogy, and Meve is one of the best leads the series has produced.

My Verdict: The most underrated Witcher game and a must for anyone who enjoys the writing as much as the sword fights. You don't need to love Gwent, as the puzzles teach you everything along the way.

Protagonist

Your own witcher

The Witcher: Monster Slayer was a free-to-play, location-based AR game set in an earlier era, well before Geralt's time. Your real surroundings became the game map, with monsters, herbs, and quests spread around you. Real-world weather and the time of day changed which creatures showed up, so a late walk could turn up a beast you'd never see at noon.

Fights played out on the touchscreen in one-on-one duels where you swung your sword, cast signs, and threw bombs, with oils and potions brewed ahead of a hunt. Spokko pulled the game from app stores on January 31, 2023, and the servers went offline on June 30, 2023. It can't be played anymore, so it's on this list for completeness and for its place at the very start of the Witcher timeline.

My Verdict: A clever idea that deserved a longer life. Treat it as a piece of series history and spend your monster-hunting hours in Thronebreaker or the trilogy.

FAQs About Witcher Games in Order

What is the correct order to play the Witcher games?

Play the trilogy in release order: The Witcher, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, then The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Thronebreaker is a great warm-up before the trilogy or a side story after it. The Adventure Game and Gwent fit anywhere.

Do I need to play The Witcher 1 and 2 before The Witcher 3?

No. The Witcher 3 explains what you need and works fine as a first Witcher game. Playing the first two adds context for Triss, Roche, and the political world the third game builds on.

What is the best Witcher game?

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, with its two expansions, is the clear pick. The Witcher 2 has the strongest branching structure, and Thronebreaker is the best spin-off by a wide margin.

What is The Witcher 4 release date?

The Witcher 4 has no exact date yet. CD PROJEKT RED joint CEO Michał Nowakowski said in an August 2026 video on the official Witcher channels that the game is targeting a 2028 release window. It stars Ciri and runs on Unreal Engine 5.

Is there a new Witcher 3 expansion coming?

Yes. Songs of the Past is a paid expansion co-developed by CD PROJEKT RED and Fool's Theory, launching in 2027 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2. Geralt heads to Letten, a new rural region where a long-dormant evil waits.

What happened to The Witcher remake?

The remake of the first game, handled by Fool's Theory on Unreal Engine 5, is on hold for now. CD PROJEKT RED told GameSpot in September 2026 that it will build on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4, so the tools and pipelines from that game need to be ready first. No release window has been given.

Final Words

Few RPG series reward playing in order like The Witcher does. The first game is rough, but watching Geralt go from an amnesiac with a clunky sword style to the weary father figure of The Witcher 3 pays off in a way few trilogies manage. Roche and Letho from The Witcher 2 turn up again in the third game, and the spin-offs fill in a war the trilogy only shows from the edges.

Short on time? Start with The Witcher 3 Remastered and both expansions, then play Thronebreaker. If you want the full arc, go in release order and give the first game a few hours to grow on you. Skip Monster Slayer, which no longer exists, and treat Gwent and the Adventure Game as extras.

Songs of the Past brings Geralt back in 2027, The Witcher 4 hands the lead to Ciri with a 2028 target, and the remake waits behind it. Until then, the trilogy is the best way to get ready for whatever Ciri does next.
