The Mafia: The Old Country map covers a stretch of 1900s Sicily built around the fictional town of San Celeste, and it caught plenty of players off guard at launch. Hangar 13 never sold this as an open world, yet the countryside does open up, hand you a horse, and let you ride off the main road. Mafia: The Old Country sits somewhere between a corridor and a sandbox.

Is Mafia The Old Country an Open World or Not?

No, and 2K said so before launch. The official Mafia: The Old Country FAQ calls it a linear, narrative-driven game, with some missions letting you pick your own route to the objective. Everything between chapters is scenery with a saddle on it.

What shipped at launch was Explore mode, available after the Prologue, which let you hunt collectibles, spend your money on gear and take horses and cars out for a ride.

The map itself stays dark until Chapter 2, right after the cutscene that sets up the San Celeste race. Collections, Journal and Charms tabs appear in the same moment, which is the game quietly telling you Sicily is now yours to poke at.

What Sits on the Map?

San Celeste is the anchor, and the rest of the region spreads out from it in a loose ring of farms, coastline and sulphur country. Lago Efesto supplies the lake and mountain views that end up in everyone's screenshots.

There is no fast travel network, though a Skip Drive and Ride toggle in the settings shortens the long hauls.

Mafia The Old Country Collectibles and What Sicily Hides

Four categories fill the Collections menu: mystery foxes, newspapers, saints' cards and photographs. Trackers still disagree on the exact totals, so treat any number online as an estimate.

The Collector trophy counts only those four, which trips up completionists who assume every marker feeds the same goal. Charms and trinacrias are tracked on their own, and charms carry the most weight, since they change how Enzo plays rather than sitting in a menu.

Man of Honor added a second hunt on 14 August 2026. The expansion's gameplay page lists wanted posters, stunt jumps and sulphur trucks to destroy around Valle Dorata, plus safecracking and smuggling jobs.

Free Ride Gave the Roads a Reason to Exist

The Free Ride update landed on 20 November 2025 and replaced Explore mode outright. 2K filled the countryside with challenges that have nothing to do with Enzo's story, which is what the launch map was missing.

Racing covers most of it: 3 circuit races, 3 road sprints, 6 time trials and 3 horse races. Combat brings standoffs, where Enzo survives timed waves of hostile guards, and 4 assassination challenges built around stealth and safe-cracking. Rewards carry into the campaign, including 16 outfits, 4 knives, 3 guns and 2 vehicles.

First-person driving arrived in the same patch, next to Photo Mode, the black-and-white Cinema Siciliano look and a sundial for swapping between sunrise, fog and ashfall. Anyone starting now, gets a far busier Sicily than we had in August 2025. We started it early, as one of the most anticipated games of that year.

Final Words

Sicily is the clearest evidence that Hangar 13 built a story game first and a world second. The island was modelled with the care of a place meant to carry 40 hours of side content, then handed a script that needed 12.

Free Ride patched over the worst of that and turned empty roads into a playground. Those activities stay simple by design, so nobody should walk in expecting a Red Dead-style web of random encounters.

My read for a first playthrough: ride the long way once, at sunrise with the sundial turned up, then stop treating the countryside as a checklist. Valle Dorata suggests Hangar 13 still has room to build here, and that is what I'm watching next.
