Onimusha: Way of the Sword Combat System Explained

The Onimusha: Way of the Sword combat system starts with simple basics: light and heavy attacks, a guard, and a dodge. On top sits the Onimusha Issen, a counter that turns a well-read enemy swing into one flash of steel. Onimusha: Way of the Sword launched on September 4, 2026, and the sword fights are the best part of it.
We called the Issen the thing that makes every duel sing in our Onimusha: Way of the Sword review. Below, we break down each layer: the Issen family, the defensive tools, the soul economy, and the weapons you carry into a fight.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Combat System Summary

Issen triggers when you attack just before an enemy's blow lands, dealing huge damage and dropping extra souls.
Break Issen opens once an enemy's stamina empties and lets you target body parts on bosses.
The Onimusha parry redirects attacks, deflects, drains stamina, and sends arrows back, and a perfect Reflex Dodge opens a counter.
Oni Gauntlet souls come in three colors: yellow heals, blue fills the Oni weapon meter, red pays for upgrades.
Absorbing souls leaves Musashi exposed, so every heal in a crowd is a risk.
How Does the Issen Work in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
You press attack in the tiny window just before an enemy's strike connects, and Musashi sidesteps and cuts through in one move. Smaller Genma die instantly, bigger enemies take heavy damage, and every success spills extra souls.
Issen type | Trigger | Best use |
|---|---|---|
Issen | Attack just before a blow lands | Duels and big swings |
Break Issen | Enemy stamina fully drained | Boss body parts |
Chain Issen | Issen chained across nearby enemies | Group clears |
Animation team lead Hiroshi Yugen told Game Informer the Issen is still the hardest move to pull off, just as it was in earlier games. He said Musashi has around 10 variations of it, depending on the angle of the incoming attack. In the older titles it happened so fast you couldn't tell what was going on, and the new animations make each cut easy to read.
Expect to miss it constantly early on. Once the window clicks, you start baiting attacks on purpose, and every duel turns into a wait for that one opening.
Parry, Deflect and Reflex Dodge Form the Defense

A well-timed parry redirects the enemy's attack, staggers them in a burst of sparks, and can slam them into walls or objects. That impact drains their stamina, which is your road to a Break Issen.
Deflects repel attacks off your blade and drain a chunk of enemy stamina. Time one against an arrow and it flies back at the archer. A perfect Reflex Dodge avoids all damage and opens a heavy follow-up, and chaining several builds into a Reflex Combo that shreds one target.
Chaining parries puts Musashi in a stronger state where his blade hits harder and landed attacks drop more blue souls. Capcom also rebuilt blocking. Yugen told Game Informer that Musashi can now guard from high, mid and low angles, including from the side and behind.
Oni Gauntlet Souls Drive the Resource Loop
The gauntlet on Musashi's arm absorbs the souls that fall out of defeated enemies, and each color does one job:
Soul color | What it does |
|---|---|
Yellow | Restores health |
Blue | Fills the meter for Oni Armament skills |
Red | Upgrades equipment and abilities |
Pulling souls in takes a moment of stillness, and Musashi is open to attack during it. Grab the yellow souls too early in a crowd and a Genma behind you gets a free hit.
Healing gets easier with the Two Celestials dual blades, which make enemies drop yellow souls on hit. Red souls from side fights feed long-term upgrades, so optional battles pay off.
Stances and Oni Armaments Add Variety
Musashi swings one-handed for speed and safety or two-handed for heavy punishes. In a blade clash, matching the opponent's stance wins the exchange. Game Informer's feature says Capcom's biggest goal was to turn the cutscene action of earlier Onimusha games into the gameplay itself.
We counted seven Oni Armaments in our playthrough. The Wind-Whipper naginata throws a vortex that negates ranged attacks inside it. The Earth-Shaker’s hammers tear through stamina, shields,s and armor.
Want range? The Oni Bow fires charged arrows at distant targets. Armaments work best as quick heavy hits between sword strings, and Capcom's official Onimusha: Way of the Sword Action page lists the full set of techniques.
FAQs About the Onimusha: Way of the Sword Combat System

Final Words
The Onimusha: Way of the Sword combat system rewards patience. Every defensive tool asks you to wait for the enemy's move, and the Issen is the payoff for that wait. Soul absorption decides plenty of fights. Picking the moment to stand still and heal matters more than raw damage once archers mix with melee Genma.
Regular enemies are the weak spot. Many circle and wait instead of pressing, so the deepest layers mostly show up in boss rooms, and nobody outside Capcom knows if grunt aggression will get tuned.
Learn the Issen window on single enemies first, then work toward Break Issen once parries into walls feel natural.
