Ghost of Tsushima Legends Mode Explained for New Players

Ghost of Tsushima Legends mode landed as a free co-op add-on in October 2020, and it quietly became the reason plenty of players never uninstalled the game. Sucker Punch kept the campaign's combat, threw out the history, and gave four classes a run of missions built on Japanese folklore.
Enemy counts and damage go past anything Jin's story throws at you, and two players can fight the same room in opposite ways. We scored the game 9/10 in our full Ghost of Tsushima review.
Below, you'll find what each class does, what the four Legends formats ask of you, and how to get into a lobby today.
Ghost of Tsushima Legends Mode Summary

Ghost of Tsushima Legends mode is online co-op for two to four players, added free on October 16, 2020, separate from Jin's campaign
The four Legends classes split the roles: Samurai holds the line, Hunter shoots from range, Ronin revives the team, Assassin deletes single targets
Survival puts four players against waves with weekly Nightmare variants, and Rivals is a 2v2 race settled in Final Stand waves
Gear Mastery takes 110-level gear up to Ki level 120 and opens a second perk slot
Legends ships with every Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut edition, and the PC version cross-plays with PS4 and PS5
What Ghost of Tsushima Legends Mode Actually Is

Legends is a separate online mode with its own progression, armor and enemy roster, sharing only the combat system with the campaign. Sucker Punch released it free on October 16, 2020, next to New Game Plus.
You are not fighting Mongols here. The opposition is oni, demons and spirits pulled from Japanese folklore, and story missions let you pick a difficulty before you queue.
Cosmetics all come from playing, and Sucker Punch put no microtransactions in the mode. Sony gave Legends a standalone PS4 and PS5 release on September 3, 2021, carrying the multiplayer content minus cosmetics tied to the campaign.
The Four Legends Classes And How They Play
Class choice decides your whole night. Each of the four Legends classes gets one ultimate ability and a role the other three cannot cover.
Class | Role | Ultimate ability |
|---|---|---|
Samurai | Front line, sustains health mid-fight | Hachiman's Fury |
Hunter | Ranged damage and explosive arrows | Eye of Uchitsune |
Ronin | Support, healing and revives | Breath of Izanami |
Assassin | Single-target burst damage | Shadow Strike |
Samurai walks into the middle of a room and stays there, cutting enemies down and topping its health back up. Hunter works from the back of the arena, and Eye of Uchitsune drops a volley into enemy heads.
Ronin is the class a Nightmare run cannot go without, since Breath of Izanami revives the entire team at once and a Spirit Dog keeps pressure off you meanwhile. Assassin turns fights into burst windows, teleporting across the battlefield with Shadow Strike to remove an elite outright.
Survival, Rivals And The Raid Push You Hardest
Survival is where most Legends hours go. Four players hold one location against escalating waves, and an August 2021 rebalance cut session length and added weekly Nightmare challenge variants.
Rivals is the competitive format. Two teams of two clear waves side by side, spending a currency called Magatama on tactics aimed at the other pair. Shades block their purchases, Curses bring health drain and exploding bodies, and Hwacha fire lands on their heads. Surviving the Final Stand waves takes it.
The Raid is the four-player endgame, built in three parts, and Trials of Iyo arrived as a harder, shorter version with online leaderboards. Gear Mastery sits above all of it: reach level 110 gear and Mastery Challenges open, Ki climbs to 120, and a second perk slot lands on your gear.
How To Start Playing Legends Right Now
Any copy of Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut includes Legends on PS4, PS5 and PC. Consoles need an internet connection and a PlayStation Plus subscription, per Sony's official Legends page, so a lapsed subscription is why a lobby refuses to load.
PC players got the mode with the Director's Cut port on May 16, 2024, and Sucker Punch confirmed Legends needs a PSN sign-in even though the campaign runs without one. Cross-play launched in beta with voice chat across PC, PS4 and PS5.
Matchmaking still fills Survival lobbies six years on. If your own account sits on the wrong region or platform for the people you play with, our PSN accounts are the quickest way around that.
FAQs About Ghost of Tsushima Legends Mode

Final Words
Legends holds up for a reason nobody planned. Sucker Punch built a single-player combat system deep enough that four people fighting inside it never run out of ideas.
Watch your roster more than the map list. Once you have run Survival everywhere, the mode lives or dies on whether your group has a Ronin and someone willing to play Hunter properly, and a four-Samurai lobby folds on the second Nightmare wave every time.
Sucker Punch stopped adding to Legends after 2021, and Ghost of Yotei Legends took the idea over when it arrived free on March 10, 2026. Tsushima's version is still a decent place to learn those ideas first.
