The base game originally released on PlayStation 4 on July 17, 2020, with the Director's Cut arriving on August 20, 2021. The PC version launched on Steam on May 16, 2024, ported by Nixxes Software.
The game is set on the island of Tsushima in 1274, during the first Mongol invasion of Japan. Players take on the role of Jin Sakai, one of the last surviving samurai on the island, who must find a way to repel the Mongol army led by the ruthless general Khotun Khan. Bound by the strict code of the samurai, Jin is forced to choose between fighting with honor and adopting unconventional tactics to protect what remains of his home.
Gameplay combines open-world exploration with third-person melee combat, stealth, and traversal across a large, visually detailed version of Tsushima. Combat is built around samurai sword fighting, with players learning new stances and techniques as they progress. A separate Ghost toolkit opens up more deceptive approaches, covering distraction tools, poison, and assassination from stealth. The world is filled with shrines, hot springs, side stories, and environmental detail rooted in feudal Japanese culture and landscape.
The Director's Cut includes the Iki Island story expansion, which sends Jin to a neighboring island to face a new threat while confronting parts of his past. The expansion adds new areas, enemy types, armor, and techniques. Also included is the Legends cooperative multiplayer mode, along with a New Game Plus mode and Kurosawa Mode, which presents the game in black and white with a film grain filter.
