How to Get Heroes in Clash Royale (2026)

Clash Royale introduced Heroes as a new card rarity type in recent updates, adding a new powerful layer to the game. Heroes function like evolved, powered-up versions of regular troop cards, featuring unique abilities you can manually activate during battles.

Many players struggle to understand how Heroes work or how to unlock them. The system differs significantly from obtaining standard cards, and the activation mechanics require specific strategies to maximize their effectiveness.

In this article, we'll break down everything you need to know about Heroes in Clash Royale, including how to unlock them, which Heroes are available, and how to use their abilities effectively in battle.

What are Heroes

Heroes are special card variants introduced in Clash Royale's December 2025 update. They function as powered-up versions of regular troop cards with added abilities that cost Elixir to activate during battle. Each Hero belongs to the Champion rarity category but requires 200 Hero Shards instead of standard card copies to unlock.

The Hero ability system works similarly to Champion cards. Once you deploy a Hero, an ability button appears in the bottom right corner of your screen, above your card hand. Clicking this button consumes Elixir and activates the Hero's unique skill, which varies depending on which Hero you're using. The ability remains available only while your Hero stays alive on the battlefield.

How to Unlock Heroes

Unlocking Heroes requires reaching specific Arena levels and collecting Hero Shards. The first Champion slot, which Heroes use, becomes available when you reach Arena 15. The second Champion slot unlocks later at Arena 25.

Each Hero requires exactly 200 Hero Shards to unlock. You collect these shards through events and Hero Boxes. When you collect 200 Hero Fragments, the game automatically unlocks a random Hero for you. If the random unlock gives you a Hero you already own, you receive cards for that Hero instead, plus 60 Hero Fragments returned to your inventory. After unlocking any Hero, you upgrade it using Wild Cards matching the base card's rarity.
