Minecraft Dungeons II Crossplay Links Every Platform

Minecraft Dungeons II Crossplay Links Every Platform

Minecraft Dungeons II crossplay connects every platform the game launched on, and co-op parties support up to four players. You can play online or share one screen. You can also combine the two, which the first game never allowed.

In our Minecraft Dungeons II review, we called co-op and crossplay the part that just works, and the first days after launch haven't changed that read. A few rules still trip people up, mostly the split between online and offline heroes and how cross-progression follows your account.

Below, you'll find how each co-op mode works, which platforms play together, and what to set up before your first session.

Co-Op & Crossplay Summary

  • Up to 4 players per party, in couch co-op, online co-op, or mixed co-op that combines both.

  • Crossplay covers PC (Steam and Windows), Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.

  • Friends join through an eight-character party code, on any platform.

  • Online and offline heroes are separate. Pick online if you ever want to play with friends remotely.

  • Cross-progression follows your hero when every platform account links to the same Microsoft account.

  • Multiplayer now runs on dedicated servers, replacing the first game's peer-to-peer hosting.

How Does Minecraft Dungeons II Co-op Work?

Minecraft Dungeons II co-op lets up to four heroes share a run depending on where your group sits. Mojang's official Dungeons II co-op breakdown covers three setups.

Mode

Who plays

Needs internet

Couch co-op

2–4 players on one screen

No

Online co-op

2–4 players on separate devices

Yes

Mixed co-op

Local players plus online friends

Yes

Mixed co-op is the mode most groups will lean on. Two siblings on one console can take their session online and let a friend on another platform fill a free slot, up to four heroes. The Steam store page lists shared and split-screen co-op plus Remote Play Together, so PC players get the local option too.

Reviving a downed teammate goes faster when two of you do it together, and a mini inventory on the D-pad lets everyone sort gear at once. Lost players also get a guiding line back to the group.

Minecraft Dungeons II Crossplay Across Platforms

Minecraft Dungeons II crossplay puts every launch platform in one player pool. Mojang's motto for the feature was one-click crossplay, meaning you boot the game for the first time and it works.

The Dungeons II FAQ says online console co-op requires a platform-specific subscription, sold separately. Playing couch co-op on one console doesn't need one.

To bring friends in, the host shares an eight-character party code made of letters and numbers. Friends enter it and land in the lobby or a run already in progress, whatever device they're on. The Microsoft account behind all of this is the same login Minecraft Accounts use on Java and Bedrock.

Online Heroes, Offline Heroes and Cross-Progression

The hero you create decides where you can play. In our testing, online and local heroes kept separate progress. An online hero gets crossplay, party codes and matchmaking, and an offline hero stays on solo and couch co-op.

Early Steam Community threads show players who couldn't join friends for exactly this reason. The fix they landed on was to create a new hero and pick the online option from the main menu. Planning to play with anyone outside your living room? Start online.

Cross-progression works through Mojang's backend. The studio stores hero data online and says linking your platform accounts to the same Microsoft account keeps you on the same hero, so a character leveled on Steam Deck carries over to Xbox. You can even sign into a friend's device with your own platform account and keep playing that hero.

Your Microsoft login matters outside Dungeons II too. Owners of the first game who sign in with it before December 31, 2026 unlock the Hero Cape, and it's the account that holds your Minecoins for the main game's Marketplace.

What Changed From the First Minecraft Dungeons

The original game hosted sessions peer-to-peer, so one player's weak connection dragged down the whole party. Dungeons II uses dedicated servers, and the game picks the best server for the party based on each player's ping. We didn't drop a single session during our review.

Couch co-op got more flexible. In the first game it was offline only. Now a couch party can go online and take in remote players, or pull in a stranger through matchmaking to fill an open spot.

Matchmaking scores possible matches on things like core quest progress, region and power level. It can also drop you into a session that's already underway.

Mojang hasn't explained how loot splits between players, and unofficial guides disagree on it. That gear stays inside the spin-off either way, separate from the Minecraft Items you collect in the main game.

FAQs About Co-Op & Crossplay

FAQs About Co-Op & Crossplay banner

Does Minecraft Dungeons II have crossplay between PS5 and Xbox?

Yes. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players share one crossplay pool with PC and both Switch models.

Does Minecraft Dungeons II have split-screen couch co-op?

Yes, up to four players can share one screen. Couch co-op works offline, and you can take the session online to add remote friends through mixed co-op.

Can I move an offline hero to online play?

No. Offline and online heroes keep separate progress, so you'll need a new online hero for crossplay or matchmaking.

Final Words

Co-op in the first game felt bolted on. Here it's the main way to play, and the dedicated servers are why a four-player party on mixed platforms holds together. Most setup problems trace back to the first menu. Pick online when you create your hero and link the same Microsoft account on every device you own.

Mojang hasn't said how guest progress saves in mixed sessions, and some players report slow matchmaking in the first days. We'll be watching whether early patches touch either one.

If your group is split across consoles, send the party code and jump in.
