Control Resonant Combat and Every Form the Aberrant Takes

Control Resonant Combat and Every Form the Aberrant Takes

Control Resonant combat runs on one weapon, the Aberrant, and it changes form within a single attack string. Control Resonant hands Dylan Faden twin daggers, a scythe, a giant hammer, and a chain whip (plus a couple more), then asks you to stitch them into your own moveset. Your Aberrant forms decide how every fight plays out.

Our Control Resonant review called the combat the best thing Remedy has built, a big claim from a story-first studio. So how does it actually work?

Below, you'll find every form, all six Control Resonant combo enders, Falter, and the abilities. Here is how the Control Resonant story setup works.

Control Resonant Combat Summary

Control Resonant Combat Summary
  • Control Resonant combat builds a moveset from three slots: a primary form, a secondary form and a combo ender.

  • Secondary forms (Crush, Extend, Drill) carry most of your Falter pressure.

  • There's no block or parry. The perfect dodge is your defense.

  • Each Resonant boss offers up to three abilities, and you keep one.

  • Hotfix 1.3.3 cut health and Falter thresholds for most enemies, and made respecs cheaper.

How the Aberrant Forms Build Your Moveset

Your moveset has three slots: the primary form covers basic attacks, the secondary form handles heavy or charged hits, and the combo ender closes a string. A chain swaps the Aberrant between them on the fly.

Form

Slot

Weapon

Best at

Strike

Primary

Twin short blades

Fast single-target damage, higher crit chance

Glaive

Primary

Scythe

Wide arcs, pushing weaker enemies back

Cleave

Primary

Axe

All-round play, bonus damage from behind

Crush

Secondary

Hammer

Charged knockdowns, heavy Falter

Extend

Secondary

Chain whip

Long reach, hits several enemies

Drill

Secondary

Drill

Sustained damage on one target

Primaries set your speed and reach, and secondaries do most of the stagger work. I'd start with Strike and Crush, which pairs the fastest primary with the secondary that builds the most Falter.

Glaive with Extend suits crowded arenas, since both hit several enemies at once.

All Six Control Resonant Combo Enders

Combo ender

What it does

Concussive Beatdown

Quick burst with heavy Falter, built for bosses and big enemies

Uppercut Surge

Launches the target into the air and feeds Power

Wide Edge

One huge hit, ideal for clearing groups

Spin Edge

360-degree spin that covers your back

Split Pivot

Steady single-target damage with ongoing Falter

Split Orbit

A blade that orbits Dylan and deals damage on its own

Concussive Beatdown is the safe campaign pick, since it stacks Falter fast against bosses.

Uppercut Surge keeps the combo going in the air and refills the Power your abilities run on. Split Orbit starts weak and only earns its slot once you invest in its upgrade tree.

Falter, Dodging and the Missing Block Button

Falter, Dodging and the Missing Block Button

Falter is the stagger bar every enemy carries. Secondary hits, enders and abilities fill it, and a full bar leaves the target open to an execution that also grants a short melee damage buff. Against bosses, a full bar opens a punish window instead.

Remedy's hotfix 1.3.3 patch notes lowered the base health and required Falter level of most enemies, plus the Dancer and Deserter bosses.

Defense is all movement. There's no block or parry, so the perfect dodge carries the load. The timing window is generous once it clicks, and a dodge flows straight back into your attacks.

Steam players are split. Some say Falter pushes them onto the Extend whip for most fights, and others say combat opens up once more abilities arrive.

Control Resonant Abilities and Rebuilding Your Build

Control Resonant abilities come from beating Resonants, the story bosses. After each win you choose one from a short list of up to three, and the rest are gone for that playthrough. Previews showed a force push, remote explosions and thrown turrets.

Melee attacks restore Power and abilities burn it, so use them often. A well-timed ability usually opens the next combo.

You can swap any form you own outside combat and tune the rest of the build in the Gap, Dylan's mind-palace hub, through talent trees and artifacts.

Respeccing got cheaper with the same hotfix. Remedy cut the cost for good, and the Artist now drops two reset items instead of one, so testing a new ender costs less.

FAQs About Control Resonant Combat

FAQs About Control Resonant Combat

How many Aberrant forms are in Control Resonant?

Six base forms are in the game: three primaries (Strike, Glaive and Cleave) and three secondaries (Crush, Extend and Drill). Upgrade trees add alternate versions on top.

Can you block or parry in Control Resonant?

No. Dodging and spacing do all the defensive work in Control Resonant combat.

Can you change your Aberrant form later?

Yes, any form you own can be swapped outside combat. You can't change your primary mid-fight.

What is the best combo ender in Control Resonant?

Concussive Beatdown is the most reliable for bosses. Wide Edge and Spin Edge work better against crowds.

Final Words

The Aberrant rewards committing to a plan. A fast primary, a heavy secondary and an ender that feeds Falter will carry you further than chasing damage numbers on every form.

Read each Resonant ability list against your current ender before choosing, since the options you skip stay locked for that playthrough.

Balance could still move. Hotfix 1.3.3 arrived at launch, and Remedy hasn't said whether more combat tuning is planned. Check the next patch notes before spending a respec.
