This Enshrouded review covers the full Enshrouded 1.0 release, which Keen Games put out on October 15, 2026, on PC and PS5, closing an Early Access run that started in January 2024. I dipped into it a few times across its updates, and came back to see whether the finished game holds together. It does.
Enshrouded is a co-op survival game set in Embervale, a hand-built continent smothered by a deadly fog called the Shroud. You play a Flameborn and push the fog back one region at a time. The 1.0 update adds the Cinder's Cradle endgame region, a level 50 cap, nine new spells, and 37 new enemies.
Below, you'll find what the game is like to play, what changed with 1.0, and who should pick it up.
Enshrouded Review Summary
Enshrouded 1.0 is the most complete the game has ever been, with a finished story and the Cinder's Cradle endgame region north of Veilwater Basin.
Traversal carries the game, with Ancient Spires, a glider, and a Shroud timer that makes every dive a risk.
The reworked skill tree and Eternal spells make hybrid builds viable.
Enshrouded's building is the best in the genre, with deep terraforming and the new Sparkworks logic system.
Enshrouded co-op supports 16 players on PC and 8 on PS5, but there is no crossplay at launch.
The story stays thin, and some PC players still report freezes and shader trouble.
Embervale Rewards Every Detour

The reworked Springlands opening is the first thing I noticed. Keen touched up roads and enemy camps, added chests to Springlands, reworked the early crafting recipes, and the launch FAQ recommends a new character for that reason, so I made one. You climb out of the Cinder Vault and light a Flame Altar, and from there almost every ruin seems to hide a chest or a Shroud Root.
Shroud dives are the hook. Stepping into the fog starts a timer, roughly five minutes on default settings, and running out is lethal. I learned to plan dives like heists: grab the Shroud Root for a skill point, top up at a Return Beacon, get out before the bar empties. The red Deadly Shroud drains faster and stays off limits until you strengthen the Flame.
Getting around is a joy once the glider and grappling hook arrive. Ancient Spires are vertical puzzles with traps and climbing sections, and the flame at the top gives a fast travel point and a launch spot for long glides. I spent a whole evening chaining spire to spire across Revelwood toward Blackmire.
I loaded my old Early Access world to reach Cinder's Cradle, the biggest single addition in 1.0. It's a lava wasteland under floating Ancient islands, with 12 new Shroud Roots and a 14-type enemy faction. Keen says in the full 1.0 changelog that the final threat waits up in the sky. I haven't seen the credits yet, and I'm in no hurry.
Combat And Builds Finally Click
Combat runs on stamina for every swing, dodge, and block, with a parry that fills an enemy's stun bar and a Merciless Attack when it breaks. Early on, it felt stiff, and wolf packs punished every greedy combo. Once I took Double Jump and swapped my dodge roll for Blink, fights opened up. Anything two or three levels above me could end a fight in a couple of blows. 1.0 now flags a quest as difficult when its area sits two or more levels above you.
The 1.0 skill tree is the bigger change. Keen reset every character's tree on first load, moved the dagger skills to the assassin side, and added new ones such as Totem Mastery and Advanced Necromancy. I settled on a sword and wand hybrid, and the new wand heavy attack turned my backup weapon into a real tool against the Fell. Respeccing at a Flame Altar with Runes keeps experiments cheap.
Magic got the most love. Nine new spells arrived, from Blizzard and Ball Lightning to three summonable totems, and every spell now has an Eternal version that uses no charges. I used to save spells for bosses, and now I open fights with Pillar of Flames and stop counting.
Bows take patience. On Steam, a player called Truehawk asked at level 7 why a bow felt weaker than low-level daggers, and Sid replied that bows take off once you reach the level 10 biome. That matches my run, with archery as a support tool in Springlands and a main weapon later. The Albaneve Summits boss also lost a big chunk of health and gained a phase where it lands exhausted, so melee builds get a fair shot.
Enshrouded Building Is The Real Endgame
Building keeps me coming back. Everything inside a Flame Altar's radius is yours and survives world resets, and you can dig out or reshape most of the terrain around it. I dug my first base into a hillside with a pickaxe and flattened the yard with the Construction Hammer's terrain tools. The free-flying Airborne Architect skill means no more scaffolding to reach a roof.
Survivors turn a shack into a town. You rescue them out in the world and bring them home, and each one opens a crafting branch. Oswald Anders the Blacksmith, Balthazar the Alchemist, Athalan Skree the Hunter, Cade Hawthorn the Carpenter, and Emily Fray the Farmer each run their own stations. In 1.0, chests also improve in place without emptying them, a small fix I felt every evening.
Sparkworks is the new toy, and the deep end. It wires levers, pressure plates, doors, and traps together in a 2D graph editor. I got a gatehouse door working on a pressure plate and stopped there, since the game does little to teach the logic behind bigger contraptions. Builders who think in circuits will lose weekends to it.
Players have built underwater taverns, cliffside fortresses, pirate ships moored in a lagoon, recreations of real castles and, inevitably, a giant toilet. Adventure Sharing lets you download those worlds and wander through them, and 1.0 added a highlights category to it. I lost more time touring other people's cathedrals than I'd like to admit.
Enshrouded Co-op Is Great, Solo Works Too

Enshrouded co-op supports up to 16 players on PC and 8 on PS5 (online play there needs PS Plus, per the PlayStation Store page), and it's at its best with a few friends splitting jobs. In my group, one person mined, one cooked, and I hauled Shroud Spores for gliders. The Hollow Halls dungeons are where a group matters most, and the one place I'd skip solo on normal.
Solo holds up well. On Steam, a player called SloppyBuffalo wrote that the game is better without friends, since you set your own pace. Another player, Doc, praised the granular difficulty options and found them better suited to solo play than Valheim's. I turned enemy damage down and Shroud time up for my solo world, and it felt right. Changing those settings means leaving the world for the main menu.
Crossplay is the gap. PC and PS5 players can't share a world at launch; Keen has given no date for crossplay, and it plans the Xbox Series X|S version for spring 2027. A player named Mush also confirmed on Steam that there are still no base invasions, which I count as a plus.
A launch hotfix brought one annoying bug, and I hit it: the world settings Edit button in the main menu stopped responding. KeenToast, a Keen developer, posted a workaround on Steam (subscribe to any Adventure Sharing item, then try again) and said a permanent fix is in progress.
Is Enshrouded Worth Buying Right Now?
Yes, if building and wandering matter more to you than a strong story. Hollow Halls, Ancient Spires and Shroud Roots keep turning up long after the opening. Early Access owners on PC get 1.0 free and keep their saves, plus three exclusive decorations through Redeem Add-Ons.
On PC it ran well for me. My RTX 4080 sits far above the RTX 2070 Super on the recommended tier listed on the Steam store page, and the busiest Cinder's Cradle fights stayed smooth. The first boot sat on a shader compile for a few minutes, and wide views over a big base were the only spot where I felt it strain.
Other players on Steam see a mixed picture: jamesc70, also on a 4080, found it faster than Early Access, and DovahLazarus saw shader compiles drop from about 40 minutes to 4. Mortarbound reported more frequent freezes, and CatPerson suggested turning off Steam shader pre-caching if shaders keep recompiling.
Wait, if you're on Xbox, if your group is split between PC and PS5, or if you want a narrative game. Lore comes mostly through notes and voiced readings, and quests exist to push you into new ground. Everyone else can jump in.
FAQs About Enshrouded
Final Words
Most of the best 1.0 changes sit outside the new region. The reworked Springlands, the Eternal spells, and the in-place chest improvements change the opening hours more than Cinder's Cradle changes the last ones. A new player gets the best version of the start, which is where most survival games lose people.
Freezes, the world settings bug, and crossplay are still open, and how fast Keen closes them will decide whether the PC and PS5 communities stay busy.
Start a fresh world, build your first base somewhere stupid, like inside a waterfall, and don't rush the Shroud.
