Enshrouded Building Guide for Your First Base and Survivors

This Enshrouded building guide is for the player staring at their first empty plot. In Enshrouded, your base sets the pace for everything else, and it all starts with the Flame Altar that keeps the Shroud off your walls.
Our Enshrouded review called building the real endgame, and version 1.0 adds free-flying construction and logic wiring to the mix.
This page covers altar radius, Enshrouded terraforming, the five Enshrouded survivors to rescue first, Comfort, and a starter Enshrouded Sparkworks build.
Enshrouded Building Summary
Place your first Flame Altar on flat ground above the Shroud. It costs 5 Any Stone and starts at a 40x40x40 zone.
Grow the zone with Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexus, up to 160x160x160.
Dig only inside the zone. Terrain outside it resets.
Rescue the Blacksmith first for the Summoning Staff that brings the other Enshrouded survivors home.
Each Comfort level adds one minute of Rested time.
Start Sparkworks with a pressure plate and a door.
Enshrouded Building Guide Step One: Place Your Flame Altar
The Flame Altar is your claim on the map. Accept the quest Claim A Spot For Your Base, craft the altar from 5 Any Stone in manual crafting, and drop it above the Shroud.
Altar level | Build zone | Cost | Flame level needed |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | 40x40x40 | None | 1 |
2 | 80x80x80 | 1 Shroud Core | 1 |
3 | 120x120x120 | 5 Shroud Core | 2 |
4 | 160x160x160 | 5 Shroud Nexus | 3 |
Pick a spot with room on every side. The zone grows outward from the altar, so a cliff or river next to it eats space you'll need later.
Your active altar count rises with Flame level. Keen's official 1.0 changelog puts the new cap at 15 in its highlights and at 16 after Flame level 11 further down, so treat the exact ceiling as unconfirmed.
Digging and Enshrouded Terraforming
Enshrouded terraforming works on most voxel terrain. Your pickaxe carves soil and rock away, and the Construction Hammer's terrain tools put it back. That's how we flattened a lumpy yard for our review.
Edits only last inside the altar zone. Dig a tunnel outside the box and the world fills it back in after a reset.
Digging also pays. Every scoop drops the material you dug out, so carving a basement fills your chests with dirt and stone for later builds.
The Five Enshrouded Survivors to Rescue First

Enshrouded survivors are craftspeople asleep in Ancient Vaults. Each one you bring home adds a crafting branch, and later Flame levels ask for a set number of rescues (two for Flame level 3).
Survivor | Role | Where to look | What they add |
|---|---|---|---|
Oswald Anders | Blacksmith | North past Braelyn Bridge, then west | Forge, Smelter, Summoning Staff |
Athalan Skree | Hunter | North past Braelyn Bridge, then east | Ranged gear, Tanning Station |
Balthazar | Alchemist | Northwest Springlands | Potions, Alchemy Station |
Emily Fray | Farmer | Far north, northwest of Balthazar | Seedbed, cooking, taming |
Cade Hawthorn | Carpenter | Southeast, near the starting area | Furniture, chests, Table Saw |
Go for Oswald first. Rescuing him gives you the Summoning Staff recipe (a single Twig in manual crafting), and the staff calls every rescued survivor into a base around your Flame Altar.
Want a cozy base fast? Bring Cade Hawthorn home early. He crafts most of the beds, chairs, and chests that feed Comfort, and Balthazar's quests point you to his vault.
Comfort, Rested and Base Tips
Rested raises your maximum stamina and stamina regeneration. Its strength scales with character level, and Comfort sets the duration, with each Comfort level adding one minute of Rested time.
To get Rested, you need no threats nearby, some Comfort and warmth, plus shelter, a seat or a bed. The Flame Altar alone gives 5 Comfort, and every bed, chair, fireplace, or carpet adds more.
Airborne Architect, at the center of the 1.0 skill tree, lets you build in a free-flying mode, so no more scaffolding. Storage chests can now be improved in place without emptying them.
Your First Enshrouded Sparkworks Build
Enshrouded Sparkworks is the 1.0 logic system that connects interactive elements in your base. You craft a new set of tools and interactive props, then link inputs to outputs in a 2D graph editor.
Keen's own Sparkworks introduction uses the simplest example: step on a pressure plate and a door opens. Place both inside your zone, add the switchbox, and connect the plate's output to the door's input in the editor.
Once that works, try a timer so the door stays open for a few seconds. Keen's post also suggests swapping a base bridge for trapdoors that drop when someone steps on them.
FAQs About Enshrouded Building
Final Words
A good first base comes down to the spot. A cramped altar on a slope costs you hours of terraforming later. Survivors set the pace after that. Every craftsperson adds stations, so plan room for five or six workshops from day one.
Sparkworks is where a 1.0 base becomes something other players will want to download. Start with one plate and one door, then grow into traps and puzzles.
Watch Keen's patch notes for a final answer on the Flame Altar cap, as the official numbers still disagree.
