Gears of War: E-Day Characters and the Fall of Kalona

The Gears of War: E-Day characters are what make Kalona's fall hurt. Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the first game. Its Gears of War: E-Day story follows Bravo Squad through the three days the Locust Horde tears Kalona apart.
The game is out on Xbox Series X|S and PC, per its Xbox Store page. In our Gears of War: E-Day review, the horror-heavy opening stuck with us most, and the cast is a big part of why.
Below, you'll find how Kalona sells the dread, how the three days play out, and who fills Bravo Squad.
Gears of War: E-Day Characters Summary
The Gears of War E-Day story covers three days of Emergence Day inside one city, Kalona.
The first hours play like a horror game, with civilians fleeing and Wretches pouring out of fresh holes in the street.
Bravo Squad is Marcus, Dom, Mags Carter, and Lucas Reyes. Veteran Tai Kaliso crosses paths with them during the invasion.
Mags Carter takes over much of the plot, and Lucas Reyes only gets real weight in a late chapter.
How Does Kalona Turn E-Day Into Horror?

Kalona turns E-Day into horror by making you watch a living city fall. Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago are back from the Pendulum Wars, standing at a peace memorial, when the ground opens, and Wretches spill out of holes that weren't there a minute earlier.
In the E-Day Direct recap on Xbox Wire, The Coalition describes the opening as a monster invasion, close to a zombie movie, before anyone realizes they're facing an army. The soldiers have no idea what these creatures are, and neither do the civilians running past you.
Studio art director Aryan Hanbeck says the team built Kalona from the ocean, landmarks, and geography right outside The Coalition's Vancouver windows. You feel it in the industrial waterfront and the refineries on the skyline. Storefronts are intact, emergency lights keep flashing, and abandoned cars clog the roads.
The lived-in streets make the horror land. You watch the damage happen in real time, so every collapsed block feels like a loss. The Locust help, too, with Drones redesigned to look far more intimidating than the cannon fodder of earlier games.
Three Days and an Ending You Already Know
The Gears of War E-Day story runs across three days, and the fall of Kalona is the whole point. The city's fate is no secret going in, so the tension comes from the people.
The Coalition frames night one as confusion and fear, day two as regrouping, and day three as desperation. On day two, Captain Akila Grey names the four survivors Bravo Squad, and their first official mission is clearing Legacy Bridge of Locust.
Somewhere around the second day, we stopped playing to win and started playing to get people out. That shift feels nothing like mowing through Locust in the older games, and it gives the prequel its identity.
The campaign runs past 20 hours and drags in its back half, so the dread of the first act thins out before the finale.
Meet the Gears of War E-Day Characters
The Gears of War E-Day characters mix returning faces with new recruits. Young Marcus and Dom look like people now, with leaner builds and faces that show real emotion in cutscenes.
Character | Who they are | Story role |
|---|---|---|
Marcus Fenix | Pendulum Wars veteran | Co-lead, rebuilding his bond with Dom |
Dom Santiago | Marcus's childhood friend | Co-lead, still grieving his brother Carlos |
Mags Carter | Former Gear working at an Imulsion refinery | Pulled back into uniform, carries much of the plot |
Lucas Reyes | Young cadet on communications | Relays orders, gets a late spotlight |
Tai Kaliso | Veteran Gear from the South Islands | Meets the squad during the invasion |
Marcus and Dom start the game distant from each other. Carlos died near the end of the Pendulum Wars, so on E-Day the loss is still fresh, and the invasion forces the two of them back into the same squad.
Mags Carter Carries the Gears of War E-Day Story

Mags Carter carries far more of the story than we expected. She's a former Gear dragged back into service, and she ends up as the best-written newcomer the series has had.
A Steam reviewer going by Kusanagi complained that the marketing sold a Marcus and Dom story and delivered a Mags story instead. We felt the same shift by the midpoint, and it bothered us less.
Lucas Reyes spends most of the campaign relaying orders, and it's hard to register him as a person. A late chapter finally gives him something to do and hits harder than expected, though it arrives so late it feels like a fix from the final edit.
FAQs About Gears of War: E-Day Characters
Final Words
E-Day works best as a disaster story. The Coalition put the stakes on the people inside Kalona, and the first act is some of the tensest Gears ever made. Mags Carter is the character you'll remember, even with Marcus and Dom on the box art.
Lucas Reyes's late chapter suggests the writers had more planned for him, and DLC or a sequel set in the early war could pay that off.
If you play it, take the opening hours slowly. The horror lives in the details of the city, and they're gone once the Locust finish with it.
