Gears of War: E-Day Movement Puts a Jump in Every Firefight

Gears of War E-Day movement gives Marcus a jump button for the first time in 20 years of the series. He can also slide out of a sprint and climb onto ledges without snapping into cover, and anyone raised on the waist-high walls of Gears of War will feel it fast.
We flagged it in our Gears of War: E-Day review as the change that touches everything else. Below, we'll break down the new moves, the weapon changes, and the enemies that punish you for staying put.
Gears of War: E-Day Movement Summary
Gears of War E-Day jump and climb get you onto ledges and vehicles without entering cover first.
A new slide and cover gaps let you approach low and pass under trucks or through holes in walls.
Cover entry cancels only within 1.5 meters of the object, which ends hyper-bouncing.
Every projectile has travel time, so you lead moving targets.
The Gnasher drops from 8 to 6 shells with a round-by-round active reload.
E-Day enemies like Reavers and Seeders are built to flush you out of cover.
How Does Jumping Work in Gears of War E-Day?

Jump toward a wall, ledge, or vehicle within arm's reach and Marcus grabs it and hauls himself up; no cover snap needed. The official E-Day gameplay updates pair it with a slide from sprint and cover gaps, low openings like the space under a truck or a hole in a wall that you duck or slide through.
Creative director Matt Searcy told GameSpot that mobility was a way to evolve the gameplay mechanics and add a new dimension to flanking. He was just as clear that Gears will never be a platforming game, and that no levels are built around jumping to reach a spot.
In practice, you hop a display cabinet, mantle a tall wal,l or climb onto a car to fire down on a squad that expected you behind the barrier. One quick climb can turn a flank into a firing position.
Move | What it does |
|---|---|
Jump | Grabs walls, ledges, and vehicles within arm's reach |
Slide | Low approach from sprint, under vehicles, into cover from range |
Mantle and climb | Over tall cover and onto high spots, no cover snap |
Cover gaps | Duck or slide through low openings |
Gears of War E-Day Movement Keeps Cover Heavy
Cover still decides most fights. Searcy told GameSpot the team kept its heavy feel and made moving in, out and along it more natural, down to interacting through car windows and shelves.
You can only cancel a cover entry within 1.5 meters of the object, which ends hyper-bouncing, the rapid cover-hopping that defined high-level Gears versus for years. A player in a cover cancel can stop fast but needs a moment to change direction completely, so the path is easier to read and punish.
Speed now comes from sprinting, evading and sliding more than from bouncing off walls. The Coalition also says each player's movement and actions are easier to track on screen.
Will veterans miss the bounce? August 2026 beta players were split, with some praising the verticality and others saying the COGs felt lighter. A few called it the most shotgun-heavy Gears multiplayer yet.
The Gnasher and the Arsenal Got Rebuilt
Every projectile now has simulated ballistics and travel time, first-person scopes carry sway, and recoil on some automatic weapons rewards short bursts.
Versus players will notice the E-Day Gnasher changes first, since it drops from 8 to 6 shells and now uses a round-by-round active reload. The Breechshot shares that reload system and returns with a one-shot headshot kill in PvP.
Weapon | What changed |
|---|---|
Gnasher | 6 shells, round-by-round active reload |
Breechshot | Round-by-round reload, one-shot headshot in PvP |
Hammerburst | Accurate 6-round burst, faster fire on a perfect reload |
Prototype Lancer | Higher fire rate and deeper magazine than recent Lancers |
By default, the active reload bar now sits under the reticle, and a setting moves it back to the upper right. Our review also points to the new Gut Puncher grenade launcher, which lets you pick when to detonate, and the Imulsion-fed Incinerator shotgun.
Chainsaw duels and meat shields are missing at launch. Campaign and Horde Siege add a Weapon Mod system, with mods for recoil, scopes and chainsaw speed.
Gears of War E-Day Enemies Push You Out of Cover

The Coalition says the redesigned Locust pin you in cover, flush you from your position, or even mirror COG tactics. With jump and slide in your kit, you finally have somewhere to go when that happens.
Armored Wretches can catch you in a scream that disorients you and limits your actions. Seeders are mini-bosses you get close to and taunt out of their holes until they expose a weak head. Boomers soak more damage, and at low health a Lancer chainsaw finishes them.
Reavers can drop a Drone squad and leave, or stay as walking tanks that leap onto high walls and rain munitions from above. Our review also flagged an acid-spitting frog creature that forces you out of cover more often than standard Drones.
A Reaver on a wall or acid at your feet is your cue to slide to new cover or climb above the fight.

Final Words
The jump button grabs the headlines, but the 1.5-meter commitment rule will decide how E-Day feels long term. The Coalition added mobility and removed the old exploit at the same time, so every fast move now trades against predictability.
Beta testers who found the COGs too light may push for tuning, and nobody outside the studio knows if chainsaw duels will return.
For your first sessions, practice sliding into cover from range and learn the six-shell Gnasher rhythm. Check the rooftops and walls before you check the corners, since height is where the new movement pays off.
