Valor Mortis Bosses in Order and How to Beat Each One

Valor Mortis Bosses in Order and How to Beat Each One

Valor Mortis bosses come in a fixed run of 10 story fights, and the first real one is the hardest. General Lothaire waits at the end of Chapter 2, and the bosses after him play fairer, even when they hit harder on paper. Stuck at a fog gate in Valor Mortis? The Valor Mortis boss order below tells you what's behind it and what to bring.

We died to the Eagle-Bearer more than to anything else during the run for our Valor Mortis review. One More Level had already admitted before launch that demo players found him too unforgiving.

Below, you'll find every boss in story order with its region and Catalyst payout, plus a short How-to-beat plan for each fight.

Valor Mortis Bosses Summary

  • There are 10 Valor Mortis bosses, all mandatory. Guides list no optional bosses or post-game superbosses in the base campaign.

  • General Lothaire is the Valor Mortis hardest boss for most players. Your Chapter 1 meeting is a scripted loss, and the real fight closes Chapter 2.

  • One More Level said demo players found Lothaire too unforgiving at the end of Chapter I, and that the full game uses him as the Chapter II boss.

  • Dodge attacks that glow red and parry the rest. Red marks the unblockables.

  • Fire Transmutation is the go-to damage over time, though several later bosses build Ignite slowly. Stasis arrives in Chapter 4 and Shield in the University.

  • Captain Raphael pays 50,000 Catalysts, more than any boss before him.

  • The Entity, Voice of the Void, is the final boss and floods the arena with summons from earlier chapters.

  • The studio said before launch there'd be no selectable difficulty levels, so preparation is your only lever.

Guides disagree on chapter numbers from the University onward, so the table names the area for those three. The order stays the same in every list. Eternal Guardsman mini-bosses also show up across the campaign with movesets that change from duel to duel, but they don't count toward the ten.

Chapter 12 exists, and the First Update cleared a progression blocker in it. No boss guide places a fight there, so the Entity is the last boss you'll face.

Why General Lothaire Is the Valor Mortis Hardest Boss

General Lothaire is the hardest fight in the game for most players, and he's also the first. He swings a long eagle standard, fires pistols from extra arms the plague gave him, and throws a red-outlined leap you can't block. The real fight takes place at the Abandoned Church in a burning village, closest to the Quarry Lantern in the Valley of Ashes. Beating him pays 10,000 Catalysts and the Torn Banner trophy.

He has two phases, each with its own health bar. Phase one is a reach-heavy duel with gunfire mixed into his strings. Phase two adds grab attacks from his transformed arm, and soldiers join in to crowd you.

In its Final Stretch development update on Steam, One More Level said demo players found Lothaire too unforgiving at the end of Chapter I, partly since players had only about 30 minutes with the combat by then. The team added that the full game uses him as the boss at the end of Chapter II, once you've had more practice and more levels. The October 16 First Update notes don't mention him, and we still found him overtuned in the retail build.

How to beat: Set him on fire with Fire Transmutation, parry his readable sword strings for posture damage, and follow your parries with Pistol shots. Kill his soldiers the moment they arrive, and roll away from every red glow.

Chapters 3 to 5: Iron Marshall, Sphinx and Slaughtermill

Chapters 3 to 5: Iron Marshall, Sphinx and Slaughtermill

The Iron Marshall

The Iron Marshall waits in a timber barn just west of the Orchard Lantern in the Fallen Village. He has 2,400 HP and one health bar with no second phase. Expect cannon fire at range, a red-flaring rush and an unblockable rising bash, plus heavy arm sweeps up close. He takes 10% less damage from firearms and 30% less from explosives.

How to beat: Block or parry his regular swings to break his 800 posture, and roll away from the rising bash. Whenever he walks past an explosive barrel, shoot it.

Sphinx, Devourer of the Unworthy

The Sphinx rises from the sand of the Pyramids with two health bars, fast charges, claw swipes, tail blows, and purple energy waves. Pick up the Stasis Transmutation earlier in Chapter 4, past the Weeping Ledge Lantern, since this fight leans on it. Phase two opens a target on its face.

How to beat: Freeze it with Stasis between charges and punish the frozen window, then parry its claws to keep up the pressure. Sidestep the purple projectiles, and in phase two put your shots into the face target.

Slaughtermill

Slaughtermill is a corrupted windmill, and it was our favorite fight of the whole review. It has 3,250 HP and no posture bar, and the timber itself takes no damage. The glowing red bulbs are your targets, with some hidden behind boards you pull down with the hold prompt. Breaking four opens the mill; then it catches fire and four more appear. After the tower falls, a cavern stage ends on a large eye in the upper window.

How to beat: Shoot the bulbs with your Pistol and shelter behind a raised Nephtoglobin platform when the fan's gusts start. In the cavern, grapple up, shoot the sail bulbs, and finish on the eye. Killing summoned enemies restocks your ammo when you run low.

Chapters 6 and 7: Anna, Aurelius and Experiment 83

Chapters 6 and 7: Anna, Aurelius and Experiment 83

Anna, the Bride Drowned in Tears

Anna opens Chapter 6 in the flooded square of the Cursed Hollow. She staggers easily, but she bursts out of the water with a sudden unblockable and calls in villagers as her health drops. One damage database lists her at half damage from firearms. After the fight, the wreath on the arena altar starts the Till Death side quest.

How to beat: Fight her in melee, dodge the strike when she surfaces, and punish her recovery. Clear the crowd with a Hand Grenade, then burn her down, as her death also removes any summons still standing.

High Justicar Aurelius, Last of the Faithful

Aurelius duels you with a sword on the broken bridge in the Outskirts, and his combos come fast and chained. Drinking a flask starts phase two, which adds a mutated arm, ground slams, and an airborne unblockable jump.

How to beat: Parry his full combo string before you counter, as cutting in early gets you clipped. In phase two, keep your distance whenever the arm is out and delay your dodge a beat on the jump. Close in once he's back to sword range.

Experiment 83

Experiment 83 waits in the Lighthouse basement, right after Aurelius in the same chapter. It has 3,400 HP and 1,000 posture, chases you around the room, and throws unblockable grabs. Ignite builds 50% slower on it. Spend your Ferrofluid upgrades and Ambers between the two fights, and check the side lab next to the arena for a chest with a Quintessential Blade Material.

How to beat: Keep moving, dodge sideways when it commits to a grab, and punish the recovery. Shoot its weak points and work the posture bar down for a big critical.

Late-Game Valor Mortis Bosses: Orphan, Raphael and the Entity

Late-Game Valor Mortis Bosses: Orphan, Raphael and the Entity

The Orphan

The Orphan fights in the University with 4,000 HP and poison vents across the arena. Phase two starts when it tears open its back, and it comes out faster with a pipe weapon and a poison beam. It's immune to Infection and builds Ignite 70% slower. Pick up the Shield Transmutation in the University library, past the Main Hall Lantern, before you go in.

How to beat: Use Shield to soak its combos and walk through the gas, and sidestep the poison beam. Keep it burning with Oil Grenades and Flaming Whetstones, and settle in for a long fight.

Captain Raphael of the Nephtis Superioris

Raphael fights in the Fortress with a blade and a pistol, and he heals with a flask. As his health drops, he adds a Stasis shockwave and an unblockable strike with his weapon ignited. Grab the second Quintessential Transmutation Material near the Traverse Lantern before the fight. Only two exist, and one has to go into Shield for the missable Abyssal Eviction trophy.

How to beat: Block his sword and bullets with Shield, sidestep when he aims, and jump the shockwave. The moment he reaches for the flask, close in or interrupt him with a grenade or a shot. Once he can't heal, his health drops fast.

Entity, Voice of the Void

The Entity is the final boss, reached through the Ancient Lair in the Caverns (choose the cave when you talk to Lucjan). It takes William's form, teleports, and launches tentacles after each teleport. It also summons enemies from earlier chapters that die in one hit. During its phase change, it turns untargetable and calls in clones, and phase two adds unblockable Claymore strikes. Guides note you can wrap up collectibles and side quests before the ending.

How to beat: Keep Shield up and clear the summons with the Pistol or quick slashes before you return to the boss. In phase two, play defense and save your big hits for the stagger windows.

How to Prepare for Any Valor Mortis Boss Fight

Will the game go easier on you? It won't. Szymon Bryła of One More Level told Insider Gaming before launch that Valor Mortis wouldn't have selectable difficulty levels, and he pointed players toward perfect parrying and aggressive play.

Red means dodge. Unblockable attacks glow or carry a red outline, and parrying everything else fills the posture bar for a critical hit. Guides also note that shooting glowing weak points refills Nephtoglobin, which you spend on Transmutations like Fire.

Stasis and Shield turn into core tools from Chapter 4 and the University onward, so practice them on regular enemies first. Rest at the last Lantern and spend your Catalysts before every fog gate. If you get stutter on PC after playing the demo or playtest, the Oct 16 hotfix notes say to delete your old GameUserSettings.ini file.

FAQs About Valor Mortis Bosses

How many bosses are in Valor Mortis?

There are 10 story bosses, from General Lothaire to the Entity, Voice of the Void. All of them are mandatory. Guides covering the full campaign list no optional bosses or post-game superbosses, though Eternal Guardsman mini-bosses appear throughout.

What is the Valor Mortis hardest boss?

General Lothaire, for most players. He's the first real boss, with two health bars, grabs and summoned soldiers, and you face him with very few upgrades. The Orphan and Raphael have more HP, but you reach them with a shield and far more practice.

Can you beat General Lothaire in Chapter 1?

Guides covering the retail game list the Chapter 1 encounter as a scripted loss. The fight that counts closes Chapter 2, matching One More Level's pre-launch update that placed him at the end of Chapter II.

Does Valor Mortis have an easy mode?

No. One More Level said before launch that the game wouldn't ship with selectable difficulty levels. Your options are leveling, upgrading weapons and Ferrofluid, and getting better at parrying.

Who is the final boss in Valor Mortis?

The Entity, Voice of the Void, fought in Entropy. You reach it through the Ancient Lair in the Caverns, and it takes William's form.

Final Words

The Valor Mortis bosses follow an odd curve, with the steepest climb right at the start. Later fights carry more HP, but by then you have Stasis and Shield, and you know how to read a red glow. That's a big part of why the later bosses felt fairer to us in the review.

One More Level put Lothaire at the end of Chapter II for retail, and the first patch went after crashes and progression blockers. Whether a later update touches his tuning is still open, and the studio hasn't said.

If he's still beating you, slow down. Clear his soldiers first and treat every red glow as a roll. Once the Eagle-Bearer falls, the other nine fights are far easier to read.
