Valor Mortis Parry Tips That Get You Past the Early Chapters

Valor Mortis Parry Tips That Get You Past the Early Chapters

The Valor Mortis parry decides whether the first few chapters feel like a slog or a duel. Hold your guard through a combo, and you lose a little health with every hit; the early fights keep testing that habit. These Valor Mortis combat tips start where a raised guard stops saving you.

We called parrying the heart of the game in our Valor Mortis review. One More Level, the Ghostrunner studio, built a first-person Soulslike where defense means reading the strike, and it came out on October 13, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Below, you'll find how parry, block, dash, rally, and stamina fit together, plus what to expect from the hitboxes.

Valor Mortis Parry Summary

  • Blocking costs health on every hit. Counterattack soon after, and you win some of it back.

  • A clean Valor Mortis parry takes no damage and fills enemy posture fast. A full posture break opens a critical attack, the game's finisher.

  • Red-glowing attacks can't be blocked or parried. Dash out of them.

  • Valor Mortis stamina (the game calls it Endurance) pays for swings, blocks, dodges, and sprinting. Keep enough for one dash.

  • Ambers add parry options, including one that lets you parry enemy bullets.

  • Valor Mortis hitboxes can reach past the visible weapon on boss sweeps, so give big swings extra room.

Why Blocking Drains You in Valor Mortis

Holding block in Valor Mortis cuts the damage you take, but it never removes it. Every blocked hit costs a sliver of health and some Endurance, so a long combo against a raised guard leaves you weaker even when nothing lands cleanly.

Some of that health comes back if you hit back. Counterattack soon after taking damage, and you recover a little of it, a system we call rally. Wait too long, and that health stays gone until you heal.

Your weapon changes how much blocking you can lean on. The Rapier can't block conventionally and lives on parries, the Saber handles both, and the Claymore swaps speed for heavier hits. On any of them, save the block for attacks you haven't learned yet.

How the Valor Mortis Parry Opens a Finisher

How the Valor Mortis Parry Opens a Finisher

Press block just as the enemy's attack lands, after the wind-up, and you parry. A successful Valor Mortis parry cancels the damage and deals heavy posture damage, far more than a normal melee hit does.

Once posture breaks, the enemy staggers and you can launch a critical attack. The Valor Mortis Steam page lists finishers right next to parries and dashes. Most regular enemies die from that one blow, and bosses lose a big chunk before their posture recovers.

Leveling opens slots for Ambers, perks that each tweak one habit. One lets you parry enemy bullets, and another widens the melee parry window. With only a few slots to fill, pick the habit you most want to sharpen.

Dash, Red Attacks and Valor Mortis Stamina

Attacks that glow red ignore both block and parry. The dash is your default answer to them. A couple of weapon and Transmutation upgrades add other counters later, but early on you'll be dodging. The Official Gameplay Overview from September 30 covers stamina management next to parrying and counterattacks.

Dodge at the last moment before a red attack lands and your next strike hits harder. The leaping dogs are the other good reason to dash, since jumping attacks are easier to sidestep than to time.

Valor Mortis stamina runs out fast. A handful of swings leaves you exposed, and once an attack animation starts, you can't cancel it into a parry. Stop swinging with enough Endurance left for one dash, then reset.

Valor Mortis Hitboxes and Hits Through Your Guard

Reach is our biggest gripe with Valor Mortis hitboxes. Boss sweeps sometimes connected from farther out than the weapon looked, and some swings that looked like misses still cost health.

Faster enemies cause a different problem. A Steam player described a second hit getting through a held block, and we ran into the same thing. Demo feedback on Steam was split, with some players calling the parry inconsistent and others calling it easy.

Give big sweeps an extra step of room and treat fast multi-hit strings as parry checks. The First Update patch notes from October 16 fixed crashes and progression blockers but listed no hit detection changes.

FAQs About Valor Mortis Parry

How long is the Valor Mortis parry window?

One More Level hasn't published it. A datamined breakdown suggests roughly 0.2 seconds for most attacks, but treat that as unconfirmed. An Amber widens the melee window if you struggle.

Can you parry everything in Valor Mortis?

No. Any attack with a red glow is unblockable and unparryable, so dash out of it.

Do parries restore health in Valor Mortis?

Not on their own. Health comes back through rally, when you counterattack soon after taking a hit. A Saber upgrade adds health recovery to parries.

Which weapon is best for parrying?

The Rapier. It gives up conventional blocking for parry-focused play, which forces the habit early.

Final Words

Valor Mortis rewards patience more than aggression. Stuck on an early boss? You're probably missing which attacks you can parry, and more damage won't fix that.

Spend your first hour learning enemies before trying to clear them. Block an attack once to see its rhythm, then parry it every time after. Your health bar will tell you which habit is winning.

Boss reach still needs a patch, and the First Update didn't touch it. Until One More Level addresses hit detection, distance stays part of your defense, and we'll update this guide when that changes.
