Valor Mortis Shortcuts, Secrets and Side Quests Worth Doing

Valor Mortis side quests are easy to walk straight past. The game has no Valor Mortis map and no compass, so you spot every side path and locked cellar by eye, and that's exactly where the quests hide.
One More Level's plague-era action RPG launched on October 13, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, with chapters that loop back on themselves like a Metroidvania. Our Valor Mortis review praised that structure and flagged the missing map as a time sink in the larger chapters.
Below, you'll find how to get around without a map, when fast travel and the two Nephtoglobin abilities show up, and which side quests earn the detour.
Valor Mortis Side Quests Summary
No map, no compass: the Quests tab clue, tricolor banners and area names point the way.
Valor Mortis fast travel opens in Chapter 3 after General Lothaire, the Eagle Bearer, and Lanterns you lit earlier join the list.
Nephtoglobin Grapple (Chapter 3) and Platform Control (Chapter 5) open side paths you couldn't reach before.
There are over 20 side quests. Homesick, Lullaby, Till Death, and Seamus Diggory pay out Ambers or a Flask upgrade.
In the Name of Art rewards the Butcher's Carnage Amber and got a bug fix in update 1.004 on October 16.
The Choir is tied to Chapter 10, and the rest can wait until after the story.
How Do You Find Your Way Without a Valor Mortis Map?
You read the level. There's no map screen in any menu, and none shows up later, so direction comes from quest text and memory. Open the Quests tab and check the chapter clue. In Chapter 1, it tells you to follow the tricolor banner of the empire, and torn French flags on poles mark the opening route.
Area names flash up in big letters as you walk in. Lanterns, the rest points where you level up, make the best landmarks.
Small chapters handle this well, and finding the way yourself feels earned. Bigger ones drag. Players on Steam have complained about long runbacks to bosses before fast travel arrives, and our review lost time in the same places. Got a door locked from your side, or a gap you can't cross yet? Note the nearest Lantern. A lot of those spots turn into shortcuts or ability gates later.
Shortcuts, Lanterns and Valor Mortis Fast Travel

Valor Mortis fast travel opens in Chapter 3: Rendezvous. Beat General Lothaire, the Eagle Bearer, behind the fog wall outside the Abandoned Church, walk through the door behind him, and kindle the Lantern inside. From then on, any kindled Lantern sends you to another one, or back to the church hub for weapon upgrades.
Lanterns you kindled in Chapters 1 and 2 join the list as well. There's no known way to get fast travel earlier, and you pick destinations from region cards with pictures.
Until then, shortcuts carry the load. Gates open from the far side, and ladders kick down, and one shortcut in our playthrough dropped us beside a Lantern we'd rested at an hour earlier. An opened gate usually means a shorter walk back to the next boss.
Nephtoglobin Grapple and Platform Control Open the Side Paths
The Nephtoglobin Grapple shows up near the end of Chapter 3. Defeat the Iron Marshall in the Fallen Village orchard, then interact with the infected body in the ruined house he guards. It pulls you to blue Nephtoglobin anchors and lets you wall-run on blue-coated surfaces.
Nephtoglobin Platform Control follows in Chapter 5: Crime, on the main path past the Ship Graveyard Lantern. Use it to extend platforms, shift blue walls, or activate traversal poles. Some puzzles want both, like extending a platform and then grappling to an anchor.
Both come from the story and can't be missed. The payoff runs backward: paths you saw but couldn't reach in earlier chapters open up, and our review found grenades, special ammo, and crafting materials tucked down those side routes.
Which Valor Mortis Side Quests Are Worth Doing?
Start with the quests that pay out Ambers, Flask upgrades, or achievements. Most Valor Mortis side quests begin and end inside one region, so the detours stay short.
Side quest | Region | Why it's worth it |
|---|---|---|
Homesick | Caverns | Bottomless Well Amber |
Lullaby | Fallen Village | Tomorrow's Promise Amber |
An Unheard Farewell | Valley of Ashes | An Amber plus the Aggressive Reconnaissance achievement |
Till Death | Cursed Hollow | Tomorrow's Promise Amber, opens after The Bride |
The Curious Case of Seamus Diggory | Cursed Hollow | Ferrofluid Flask upgrade, Blood and Wine achievement |
Mummy and Daddy | City of Orphans | Tiny Whisker Gift |
In the Name of Art sits in the Vale of Wrath during Chapter 5, near the Under the Bridge Lantern. Bring Fire Transmutation for the cellar webbing. Shoot the glowing bulb through the side window to get in, move the covered canvas in the attic, and the trail leads to a Basement Key on the hilltop grave. Update 1.004 targeted bugs that stopped players from starting or advancing it.
The Mice quests in City of Orphans hold the side story our review rated above the main plot. In Mummy and Daddy, don't shoot the undead parents in the cell, since that fails the quest on the spot. Use the music box in the next room, then leave the Cheese on the plate.
The Choir is the one time-limited quest. It only exists in the jail during Chapter 10: Shackled, so grab the warden's journal from the desk in the horn room when you pass it. Everything else can wait until after the credits.

Final Words
Without a map, the side content only goes to players who stop. An empty crib in the Fallen Village and a dead painter in the Vale of Wrath are easy to sprint past, and both quests end with an Amber.
Push through to Chapter 5 for Platform Control, then use fast travel to sweep the earlier regions for routes you couldn't reach. Doing it sooner means walking past the same blue walls twice.
Update 1.004 fixed In the Name of Art and a Chapter 12 progression blocker, and One More Level says work on performance continues. If a quest step won't trigger, check the newest patch notes before you restart a region.
